What will Sanchez’s holiday card be this year?

November 23rd, 2009, 1:46 pm by Dena Bunis, Washington Bureau Chief
lorettacard1If it’s the holiday season it must mean that Capitol Hill is waiting to see what Rep. Loretta Sanchez’s Christmas card will look like this year.

For 2009, the Santa Ana Democrat has a new twist. She’s going high tech and is going to send an email to folks who sign up on her campaign web site to let them know what the new twist will be with this year’s card.

Click here to see cards from past years.

The announcement will come on Tuesday, Dec. 1. And if you want to find out soonest you can go to www.loretta.org and sign up.

I was able to pry out of Sanchez that her fluffy white cat Gretzky will be featured in this year’s holiday greeting. But alas the kitty is 19 years-old and Sanchez’s veterinarian has broached the idea that next year she might have to start thinking about a replacement for the faithful Gretzky.

Senate votes to start historic health debate

With just the 60 votes they needed, the Democrats got the okay today to begin debating an $848 billion health care reform bill that if passed would move Congress one step closer to fulfilling one of President Barack Obama centerpiece campaign promises.

The vote was 60-39.

Just got an email from Sen. Dianne Feinstein. California’s senior senator said  tonight’s party-line vote showed the stark differences between the two parties. “This was effectively a filibuster,’’ she said.

“ Now, how do you filibuster and try to prevent debate on what is one of the most important issues to the American family? Families deal with this every day, can’t we deal with it, debate it, have amendments, vote them up or down, and at the end hopefully have a bill that will then go to conference, work out differences, then come back? But to say no, we’re going to turn our backs and we don’t even want to discuss it — that, to me, was very stark up here tonight.”

Sen. Blanche Lincoln said minutes ago that she will vote to let the debate start on health care reform.

The Arkansas Democrat was the last holdout Majority Leader Harry Reid needed to start deliberations on the most massive overhaul ever of the nation’s health care system.

“Although I don’t agree with everything in this measure,’’ Lincoln said, she believe its more important to start debate “rather than simply drop the issue and walk away.’’

Dems need one more yes to move health bill

Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., will vote yes health bill debate.

Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., will vote yes health bill debate.

Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu just announced she’s going to vote later today to allow Majority Leader Harry Reid’s health care reform bill to move to a formal debate.

That means the Democrats now need just one more lawmakers—Arkansas Democrat Blanche Lincoln to vote yes that the historic debate will begin.

“My vote today to move forward on this important debate should in no way be construed by the supporters of this current framework as an indication as how I might vote as this debate comes to an end,’’ said Landrieu, who is facing a tough re-election campaign. She said her vote was a decision “to move forward and continue the good and essential and important and imperative work that is underway.’’

Today’s vote to allow Reid’s $848 billion bill to come to the floor could make or break a signature issue for the Democrats and President Barack Obama. Not one Republican is expected to allow debate to start.

“What we have before us,’’ said Boxer, D-Calif., is an excellent piece of legislation that will make life better for every single American…

Throughout today and until tomorrow evening in Washington, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have and will make the case for and against this legislation. Click here to read the text of the Senate bill.

To go to one of the nation’s military academies you have to get your member of Congress to nominate you.

Today, Rep. Ed Royce went to Annapolis to look in on eight of the young men he appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy.

“We’re looking a t these young people going into the military at a difficult time,’’ said Royce, R-Fullerton. “What really strikes you how tough it is to make the grade.’’ The young men told him that in order to just pass with a D-minus they have to be able to do 45 push-ups followed immediately by 65 sit-ups and then run for a mile and a half at a seven-minute mile pace.

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano speaking today

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano speaking today

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said today that great strides have been made in border enforcement and so the time is now for comprehensive immigration reform.

In her first major speech on the subject since she left the Arizona governorship to become President Barack Obama’s DHS chief, Napolitano said a combination of  better enforcement and tough economic times has led to fewer illegal immigrants’ crossing the nation’s borders.

“I know a major shift when I see one, and what I have seen makes reform far more attainable this time around,” Napolitano said in a speech before the Center for American Progress, a Washington, D.C., think tank headed by former President Clinton Chief of Staff John Podesta. UPDATE: Rep. Ed Royce, R-Fullerton, doesn’t agree with the secretary on this at all. See his comments below.

What’s in Loretta Sanchez’s purse?

November 12th, 2009, 10:36 am by Dena Bunis, Washington Bureau Chief
Loretta Sanchez has a squishable globe in her purse.

Loretta Sanchez has a squishable globe in her purse.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez recently revealed some of her inner most secrets to Politico. So what did she tell them? What she keeps in her handbag.

No kidding. Sanchez is well known for being a good sport so when Politico asked her to do one of their “Click”  video segments that shows the lighter side of a House member she said sure.  Props to Calbuzz for digging the Politico item out and showcasing it today.

Turns out Sanchez carries a pretty large canvas tote she bought in Belgium. In her words she tells Politico it has ““skinny sexy women hanging out having coffee or tea in some café in Europe.”

The ever prepared Santa Ana Democrat said she has everything in the bag in case she gets stuck in an elevator: water, plain almonds, Dentyne  gum and a Luis Vuitton red wallet. She says she has mint natural herb tea because she doesn’t drink alcohol.

There’s hand lotion so she’s always ready to shake constituents hands. And five pens so she can sign autographs, add her name to bills and do crosswords when she’s bored.

And she carries around campaign envelopes in case she runs into a donor, two check books- one for D.C. and one for the district - and two very large sets of keys.

New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez  is commemorating Veterans Day by introducing a bill that would legalize the families of people serving in the U.S. military.

“To remove a roadblock to the reuninfication of families is a matter of fairness,’’ Menendez told reporters during a conference call. He said there are “many examples of families who serve this nation in the uniform of the United States but have other family members who live in fear of being separated.
