Carly Fiorina made her Washington debut today as an official contender for the Republican nomination to take on Sen. Barbara Boxer next spring. And she made it clear that she doesn’t think Irvine Assemblyman Chuck DeVore could gather the wide swath of voters needed to beat the incumbent Democrat.
“Chuck DeVore is the opponent that Barbara Boxer hopes she faces,’’ Fiorina told a group of Washington reporters during her first trip to the nation’s capital since announcing her Senate candidacy in Garden Grove. “I can and will beat Babara Boxer and winning matters. Winning is also about being able to find common ground with a broad spectrum of voters and being able to talk with them in terms that makes sense to them.”
DeVore has painted Fiorinaas not a true conservative and hopes to bring that point home during the campaign. Recent polls have the two running neck and neck for the nomination.
In the interview, Fiorina, a former Hewlett Packard CEO, was short on policy specifics and didn’t say how much of her own money she’s willing to spend on this race.
And oh, she did something that’s become a tradition for Boxer’s Republican opponents. She went out of her way to say how effective senior Democrat Dianne Feinstein has been compared with Boxer. The last person to take on Boxer - former California Secretary of State Bill Jones- had similar kind words for Feinstein that Fiorina has.
“She’s a very effective senator, and I will work very well with her,” Fiorina said. “I have great respect and admiration for Dianne Feinstein.”
On immigration, Fiorina wouldn’t say whether she would ever vote to give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. Instead she would want legislation that would first secure the borders and then create a new temporary worker program.
The two “biggest problems that Californians see” on immigration, she said, are “”that our borders aren’t secure and we don’t have a temporary worker program that works.” Fiorina called it “unproductiveve” to answer hypothetical questions when pushed on what she believes should happen to the illegal immigrants here now.
When asked if she would support mandatory caps on greenhouse gas emissions - as the state legislature has passed - again Fiorina wouldn’t bite.
“We should have the courage to examine the science on an ongoing basis,” she said. “But frankly, I think we ought to deal with it as a real challenge today and do what we can to create opportunities for leadership for this nation in the process.”
On campaign financing, Fiorina disputed the conventional wisdom that Washington insiders liked the of her candidacy because she would be able to fund her own election and not drain donor resources needed in other states.
Not so fast, Fiorina said. While she has lent an unspecified amount to her campaign, she has no intention of bankrolling this Senate run.
“It will not be necessary to self fund, nor am I capable of self-funding this campaign and everyone I’ve been talking with is well aware of that,” Fiorina said. “I don’t have millions of dollars to put into the campaign.”
Boxer wants to face DeVore, because he is not worth millions like Fiorina not because his politics is wrong. Carly can pay college students $100 dollars each to show up at a Fiorina rally wearing Carly Fiorina for senate T-Shirts and DeVore can’t do that. DeVore must run on his conservative record, but he wants to campaign on Boxers poor record representing this state as a liberal. Recently Chuck DeVore was in Lake Forest talking to a full house, but not one reporter from OCR showed up. However, they can do news stories like what’s in Loretta Sanchez’s purse. TV time is also very important. Boxer can call for a news conference for just about anything and the liberal press will fall over themselves to get their. I guess this is part of the reason why we get such poor leadership in public office. We keep electing rich demigods that represent themselves and we keep complaining that the country is a mess. The funny thing is that some big political donor will probably get a million dollars to study why people don’t vote.
When is devore going to start talking ‘illegal immigration’ in public again. That would get my attention. And if so many Calfornians are anti-illegal immigration it would be a great sell, especially since Boxer and Fiorina (yes, even her) are open borders advocates. Come on, Chuck. Get on the ball and talk about the issues we want you to address. Stop playing the namby-pamby game. Be a leader!
As a young gop activist in California I can tell you that Carly doesn’t need to pay college students for show up to her rallies, we’re excited for her and show up for free!
As a conservative college student, Carly is more of the same, Chucks conservative values are what is needed to defeat Boxer. There will be plenty of people throwing their support behind Chuck DeVore…we do not need another RINO in office.
for showing*
Is she planning to make a Activia commercial.
Ocobserver, he was in Lake Forest two weeks ago and stated that he would not vote for an amnesty bill. The trouble is there are no reporters that show up at these meetings and that’s why your not getting the information. I suggest you leave the computer and find out where hes speaking. Now if you want to find out what’s in Loretta Sanchez’s purse the OCR can help you.
Bob. I know that you’re a big devore promoter. That’s fine. I would be too if he would address the illegal immigration issue. He’s on the radio all the time. Never EVER talks about it! He writes commentary for the OCR all the time. Never EVER about illegal immigration and the damage it inflicts on our communtities!!! So I couldn’t care less what he says when the press in not around in small groups of constituents. I just think it would be a HUGE opportunity for him considering that both Boxer and Fiorina are illegal immigrant sympathizers!!! The majority of California citizens are ANTI-illegal immigration. I refuse to support him until he starts talking openly about it instead of acting like he’s scared.
Of course Boxer wants to face DeVore. Why should Fiorina get to have all the fun?
I have yet to here Devore do anything or say anything except bad mouth Fiorina. I can’t vote for someone like that. We all agree that Boxer may be the most incompetent Senaotor that has ever lived and a huge embarassment to the State of California. We need elected officials that are going to concentrate on the economic disaster. If not don’t run as you have no chance of being elected in 2010
Carly Fiorina concentrated on the economic situation real hard as she advised McCain to vote in favor of the TARP bill. She supports big government in all forms…just another RINO. If you look at Chucks voting record as well as where he stands on the issues and compare them to Carly’s, you will see that there is only one candidate who will serve our best interests!
We are at twelve percent unemployment. Here is a chance to elect a real conservative (De Vore). A vote for Fiorina or Boxer is a vote for business as usual and a vote against freedom and liberty.
