For those of you who didn’t get enough of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio during his visit to Orange County last week, Total Buzz is digging deep into the notebook for more often-controversial “Joe-isms.”
Some may find them distasteful. Some may find them insightful. But you’ll always find them interesting. Arpaio, who was in town to support O.C. sheriff candidate Bill Hunt, gained fame for dressing inmates in pink underwear, giving them only two meals a day and making them sleep in a tent city. He is also under investigation by the FBI for abuse of authority in immigration raids and in attacking political enemies.
On the subject of Mexican restaurants:
“I can’t go to Mexican restaurants. Most everybody runs out the back door or spits in my food.”
On how he runs his jail:
“I took away their porno and they sued me. I won that case, of course, They sue me all the time. I get sued when I go to the toilet.”
On chain-gangs:
“I put men on a chain gang nine years ago. Since I’m an equal opportunity kind of guy, I’ve put women on the chain gang.”
On how he runs his animal shelter:
“I have a nice jail for animals, with air conditioning. It cost me more to feed the dogs than the inmates.”
On being called a self-marketer:
“I don’t do it for money. I don’t want to be the governor. I want to be the sheriff. One, I get more press in one day. And two, I can lock the governor up.”
On his immigration patrols:
“Police chiefs don’t like me. Mayors don’t like me. Janet Napolitano took my authority away (to arrest immigrants on the basis of their status). The next day I went out and got 100 more.”
On his own popularity:
“I’m called a racist. They call me Hitler and cut my head off (in effigy). My polls go higher and higher.”

Wow. It’s pretty obvious where this ‘reporter’s’ opinions stand on illegal immigration!
Tony, the american people are really sick and tired of our government refusing to honor our Constitution and to protect the soveignty of our nation. You can’t blame us, Tony. This is universal. All people of other nations throughout the world feel the same way. Even mexico, Tony. When a government refuses to enforce it’s own laws to the detriment of it’s citizens we call it ‘tyranny’. If I refuse to obey a law I go to jail. If the government refuses to enforce it’s immigration laws the majority of our lawmakers turn their heads in the other direction and no one is held accountable. Mexico is throwing it’s unwanted citizens in OUR backyard and telling US to take care of them, Tony. If I dumped my trash cans into YOUR backyard every week and told YOU to take care of it, what would you do, Tony??? Think you might call the police and demand I stop that behavior?? Why don’t you attack the MEXICAN government and their citizens for doing NOTHING to stem the exodus of their poorest of the poor citizens to America, Tony??? People are supporting Sheriff Arpaio because he seems to be one of the few in authority who actually promotes ENFORCING THE LAW OF THE LAND WHEN IT COMES TO IMMIGRATION! What don’t you understand about that?? That is why Joe is is a hero to many people. Simply because he will not bend to the anarchists in Washington DC and will do what he was hired to do: ENFORCE THE DARNED LAW. You are way over the top, Tony. You need to sit down and think this one out. Don’t think with your ideological or emotional mind. Think with a logical and reasonable mind. Go fix Mexico.
OC Observer…all I did was list Joe’s quotes. How is that showing any opinion on illegal immigration?
Come on, Tony. Stop with the games. Be straight with us, man. We are your customers. We deserve more. If you’re just trying to get a rise out of us to increase the number of comments, fine. Let us know. But don’t trash Sheriff Joe and then try to claim you have no bias going on when it come to the enforcement of immigration law. We’re not as dumm as Gary Robbins looks.

I agree flatline we need some one like Sheriff Joe Arpaio he could really make a difference. Tony you might be quoting Apaio in this article with a little bit of opinion but you do put your opinions into your articles example would be the Orange County Sheriff websites cartoons that you made a big deal about nothing… So yes ocobserver is somewhat correct.
Tony is a little behind on this one. Red County, OC Weekly and Orange Juice have already run the quotes days ago. Hard to belive he was there but I am tld he was. The qoutes come from OC Weekly.

It’s really not difficult to trash Sheriff Joe. The guy is such a piece of crap he does it for himself.

Actually Nat Green the only way you would be able to talk trash on Sheriif Joe is if you are trash yourself, such as a criminal or illegal immigrant. That all being said you would only trash him if you are a law breaker.
Rocket…nope quotes are from my notebook…I wrote a story that ran online Thursday by 10 p.m. and Friday in the paper. So actually I was ahead of everybody.
This was a fabulous event what about Sheriff Richard Mack or the James Madison guy? Holding on to the negative aspect of this story is getting old. Come on Tony you can do better!

The last thing we need is the likes of Joe for governor, or any other office here. The man is a racist pig, who punishes people before they are found guilty. He does get sued all the time, and he loses millions of dollars of taxpayer money for abusing his wards, KILLING some of them. He picks on immigrants because he is a bully, but he doesn’t stop at the illegals, he will go after anyone who is Hispanic, literally stopping people on the street and demanding I.D. He chooses his victims base on their skin color. How the citizens of Maricopa vote for him is beyond belief. If you love his hatred so much, move to the desert and volunteer to work for him in one of his prison camps where people not yet found guilty are made to do manual labor in 130 degree heat. We need less hatred in our beautiful county, not more.
Maricopa paid 30-40 in claims from 04-07. Los Angeles County Sheriff paid 100 Million for the same period. Calling a man a racist pig is not being a hater? Haha
Remember Dandelion those who stay in jail after they are convicted are criminals. Actually Arpaio does not spend much in taxes he saves money. As for immigrants they have to have reasonable or probable cause to question them or detain them, therefore your statement is misinformed.
Perhaps if our Sheriff held similar views to Arpaio’s Orange County’s taxpayers wouldn’t have paid over $250 million in health care for undocumented residents (and that’s just for one year). And who knows what it must cost taxpayers for similar social services, let alone the added education and policing costs associated with illegal immgration.

Exactly. But you won’t see the non-biased (cough, cough) reporters like Tony report on how much money the OC taxpayers spend on illegal foreigners each year. That is where the free-press stops being so “free”. hah! They only report negative news on guys like Sheriff Joe who do their jobs and enforce the law. Guys like Sheriff Joe put a crinkle in their noses. But as ethical journalists they refuse to tell you how much you are forced to spend on illegal foreigners. No big investigations there. All swept under the rug by our ethical journalists who are strong advocates of transparency. hah!
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department first under Mike Carona and now under Sandra Hutchens have already been locking up and deporting criminal aliens under their very successful ICE program. It’s ironic that Sheriff “look at me” Arapaio acts as if he’s the only one doing it. As far as I can see, he’s the only one bragging (in bad taste) about it.
In the end this chest thumping campaign will fizzle out. It simply won’t get the traction outside of those who already march in lockstep behind it.
Oh my gosh. The only one who talks about “traction” is Sandra Hutchens’ advisor Dave Gillard. Me thinks DeeDee is a man. Yuk! Well Dave not only has Hunt got traction, you girls (guys) are still at the gate smelling burnt rubber. I’m kind of like Ocobserver and read everything. So DAVE substanciate your 20K a month for Hutchens campaign and do your homework
After all I’m sure you know Hutchens is a Double pension dipper pulling in $500,000 a year from us taxpayers so I’m sure she can afford you! Way to go!
Our Sheriffs Department will check you through ICE if you committed a felony, but I see so many slip through the cracks on misdemeanors. That’s why we see someone getting arrested for a felony and having a long arrest record before ICE is notified. My view is why wait until he kills or rapes someone.
All arrestees are checked for their immigration status, not just Felonies.
Not long ago there was an illegal alien who murdered his GF either in Westminister or Garden Grove. He had a rap sheet longer than roll of paper towels. They can’t even stop these clowns on the street and ID them even if they are recognized by the cops as former illegal arrestees! hah! It’s nothing short of ANARCHY promoted by the Sheriff and all the other LE leaders! hah! Yet we are FORCED to pay for them with our taxes!!! IF we refuse to pay our taxes that support illegal aliens we go to jail!!!! HAH! What a goofy fricken country!
If everyone is checked for immigration violations when there arrested, why do some have long arrest records. If you go to court watch how many people are arrested for DUI and no drivers license, some even need an interpreter. They pay their fine get back in their vehicles and drive away. Once I saw an illegal get arrested for DUI, no drivers license and stolen property in the trunk of his car. The judge gave him free legal advice and told him he could plead guilty now and I’ll sentence you or you can go to trail, but if you loose you maybe open to deportation. He pleaded guilty and got 45 days.
Happens all day long at traffic court…No Insurance “well bring it in the next time you come”, No License “well get one and come back the next time. D.U.I. “do you want rehab or jail”
What do you think they pick? and why is rehab so readily available to them? because A LOT of retired L.E., Ex-City officials and retired court employees have either opened or are invested in the cash cow called REHAB.
This article does nothing more than express the Register’s stance on illegal immigration. I am an Mexican-American whi is here legally. I think we should deport every one of those illegal immigrants, man woman or child. Who is going to contribute their part in income taxes for nationalized healthcare? Yeah you got it, you and me.
Hey ocobserver and all you other neo-Fascist slimeballs: Why doncha just round ‘em all up, put ‘em in slave-labor camps (with Sherrif Joe as the Kommandant) and gas ‘em? You know you (and he) wanna!!! Oh yeah, before I forget: God Bless America.
America is about a land of laws and rules and it exactly that reason why we have and enjoy our freedom and liberties. Once the illegal aliens begin to obey and respect our laws, then and only then will they have a say.
The mere fact that a person is occupying U.S. soil without authorization from the Government – the People – is a violation of law. Let’s stop using the excuses as to who’s going wash the dishes at restaurants, mow our lawns, or wash our cars for a reason to excuse illegal behavior. Let’s stop blaming the police for enforcing the laws and start holding the politicians more accountable to the people.
Tony, maybe a thank you is in order to America - yes, the same America that has given you the freedom to write this left wing, biased crap and bash a guy, who incidentally was elected by the People to enforce the law.

Tony, surely thou jest! That is the worst “non-denial” I’ve ever heard. You don’t like Arpaio, you support illegal immigration, we get it. Why obfuscate that fact by using rhetoric my four year old uses when he wants to get out of trouble? More to the point, your response shows that you clearly think we are idiots…because only they would believe you are non-biased on this topic.

I call Santa Ana the UM zone. My coworker was in an auto accident there. Turns out the driver had no drivers license and no insurance but she did have a consulate idenification. What happens then is the driver without the insurance gets her car impounded because of that. You can’t get insurance without a drivers license and if you are here illegally you can’t get a drivers license. So the cops tell my coworker she will have to turn it over to her own carrier (UM coverage). She also said the cops told her that the unlicensed driver’s car was a “throwaway”. That means that the unlicensed driver won’t get her car out of impound and will just buy another and hit the road again.
Personally I don’t find fault with anything Joe said. He simply makes sure inmates know they are in jail and not on vacation and he doesn’t treat mexicans any different than he treats anyone else.

Lets start a campaign drive to get Joe to move out here and clean house. I am not just talking about the illegals but the corrupt OC Sherrifs Department. Joe has my vote!
The Mojave desert has pristine prison property that would be ideal solution to the Orange County and LA County jail overcrowding, They could even have the prisoners assist in building the jail, Oscar Meyer could open an outlet store in the surrounding community.Great for the economy,
