Another poll shows Whitman leading Campbell

November 9th, 2009, 11:07 am · 6 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

Last week, I was scratching my head a little when a new Capitol Weekly/Probolsky poll showed Meg Whitman way in front of Tom Campbell for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, less than four weeks after after a Field Poll showed the two in a statistical dead heat.

But now comes an L.A. Times/USC poll that has distinctly different results from the other two but also has Whitman with significant lead. However, in a separate question, the Times poll found that two-thirds of voters had no impression of either Republican, meaning there are many votes to be won by next June’s primary.

“Right now, this race is wide open,” Neil Newhouse, who worked on the poll, told the Times.

Times poll
Whitman: 35%
Campbell: 27%
Steve Poizner: 10%

The Probolsky Poll
Whitman: 34%
Campbell: 12.5%
Poizner: 5.5%

Field Poll
Whitman: 22%
Campbell: 20%
Poizner: 9%

I believe that people are willing to vote for Whitman because she isn’t a career politician that owes their votes to campaign contributors like teachers’ and labor unions.
Everybody is sick and tired of the crooked and self serving politicians currently “serving”. The day that Campbell amended a law to exempt his buddies, the auto dealerships from following new fair finance laws, he lost my vote forever.
    GO MEG!!!!

  • Patriot says:

whitman didn’t care about voting until she wants to run for governor. Why should we trust her? I sure don’t but that being said I don’t trust any politician. What to do?

  • Ed says:

Patriot: IMHO, all the hoopla about Whitman not voting was a liberal attack. What’s that got to do with anything–it was her choice, her right to vote or not to vote. Just sayin’. I’m not a fan of Whitman, but what to do? Unfortunately, all YOU can do is pick the lesser of the evils (I no longer vote in California, but I still have an interest in who runs/ruins it). You’re right about one thing: Don’t trust any of them.

  • Bob Holt says:

Good motto, don’t trust any of them. As far as voting records go, John F. Kennedy had the worse voting record in the senate until he decided to run for president. Unfortunately the candidates we have today give us so little chose. We tend to vote against the other candidate then actually vote for someone.

  • Debbie says:

It is no surprise that Whitman beating Campbell is because that is where the GOP party has backed.

That’s a choice by the GOP. It will be a hard fight because Whitman has a horrible record on voting. Voting is a base point and platform by the GOP and to now promote someone who lacks that civic duty will be more than tough.

In addition the GOP is looking to expand its base in the party. That is to include women. Only time will tell if the GOP decision to back Whitman over Cambell was a great idea or a great failure.

  • Dawes says:

And why did the GOP back Whitman over Campbell?

She is the most progressive of the two GOP candidates.
