Sanchez not running for governor

November 6th, 2009, 7:00 am · 27 Comments · posted by Dena Bunis, Washington Bureau Chief

lorettaLet the speculation stop. Rep. Loretta Sanchez has told me she has no intention of running for governor of California.

Last weekend after San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom bowed out of contention for the Democratic nomination for governor, Sanchez’s name again was mentioned in many quarters as a potential candidate.

“I think the reality is that because it’s only Jerry Brown (left as a Democratic contender now) and because he’s got resources and name ID, I think it would be difficult for somebody like me to start off now,” said Sanchez, D-Santa Ana.

Sanchez said she had planned to do some statewide polling to see where she stood. But she had wanted to wait until after the health reform bill was passed and signed into law. But because that has been so delayed it’s getting too late, she said, to take the electorate’s pulse on any potential Sanchez candidacy.

“I love the work I’m doing right now,” says Sanchez, who is the senior woman on the Armed Services Committee and the second most senior Democrat and a subcommittee chair on the Homeland Security Committee.

The reality is given the state’s size and incredibly expensive media markets it would be difficult for any House member to win the governorship. One by one Democratic possible have said they don’t plan to run and it’s looking more and more likely that  the attorney general - AKA Moonbeam - will be the Democratic nominee and try for a second time around in the statehouse.

  • DKK says:

    Two words - Thank God!

  • lindav123 says:

Thank God she isn’t running! California would have had a chance to be a “sanctuary” STATE!!! I can’t imagine she needs any more questions about her dealings with Nativo (Larry) Lopez either.

  • shagdaddy says:

    BIG DEAL! Neither am I….

  • ocsleeper says:

Actually it would be pretty funny to watch her fun.

  • Bob Holt says:

Is this rally a news story. Her name passed around in Democratic circles by who, Loretta Sanchaz? I guess all five legal voters in her district would support her.

  • logicisourfriend says:

“Senior woman on the armed services committee”? Big deal. Why does she always have to pull the “woman” card? Perhaps it’s because that’s ALL she’s got.

And speaking of the Armed Services Committee, Sanchez, how about you tell your boss to get around to making a decision on adding troops to Afganistan. People are dying!!!

  • Martha says:

There is a god after all!

  • Charles in Charge says:

As if she had a snowball’s chance in #### anyways. She’s got no name recognition outside of OC and the beltway.

  • JusSayin says:

yeah, she’d’ run if she thought she had a chance. She needs nativo “larry” lopez to get the illegals to vote again

  • writeon says:

Well at least we now know not to waste our time and money calling her office and advising her to not vote for the government take over of health insurance. I think perhaps she may be off the government dole in the next few years. We can only hope.

  • ocobserver says:

When is the mexican president’s term up???

Loretta should look into it. I’m sure she would be a big hit down there. She has done more for the mexican citizens who are here illegally as a congressional rep than she’s done for us, american citizens. They must just love her in Guadalajara!!!

    • sickandtired says:

I love you ocobserver! You always say what I am thinking. Keep it up. I always swore that I’d never move out of California because I was born and raised here, but if she was elected governor, I’m afraid I’d have to go. She’d hand this state over to Mexico on a silver platter.

  • Samantha says:

How come she isn’t running? She si stupid enough to be governor all right!

  • Patriot says:

Good to know. I was worried for a second.

  • dad62 says:

either way we would still have an actor as gov. loretta is acting as a congress women.

    p.s. both are terrible actors

  • Steve says:

Wow, this is the only photo I have ever seen of Loretta Bixely with her mouth closed. It is always open, because she is always talking!

  • nomorgop says:

I would vote for Loretta Sanchez for Governor over ANY Republican. You right wing Republican wackos have wrecked California’s economy. I wish you would all leave and take your Gropenator with you!

  • Dorman says:

All the better to knock her out of congress next year. She’ll

  • Congresswoman Sanchez would be historic. The first woman governor of California and a Latina. I would be for it.

  • LK says:

Sanchez or Jerry Brown, what are the dems thinking? Oh, I know lets see if we can totally ruin our state. People, remember what Brown did as Gov of California last time.

  • BLM says:

    Thank God!!!!

  • nbcrystal says:

My daughter, who worked for the Heritage Foundation in DC was at a political dinner in town and was in fact seated next to Sanchez. When she asked her what her political position was on several California issues she could not answer? Her guest had to answer for her! How pathetic. How do these people get elected? Oh, that’s right RACE and money.

  • Richard Deight says:

When Loretta Sanchez says, “I love the work I’m doing right now,” what exactly does she mean?

That she loves kowtowing to illegal aliens for that all-important “Latino” vote?

That she loves having among the highest rates of absenteeism in the House?

That she loves being on a perpetual vacation or power trip at taxpayer expense?

That she loves being the target of a recent ethics probe, along with “little” sister Linda Sanchez, D-Lakewood, who was voted into office on her coattails?

Haven’t seen anything like this since Barbara Boxer with an all-time record for absenteeism in the Senate and check-kiting.

No wonder Congress doesn’t care what we think. They don’t have to. 80% of them keep getting reelected.
