Fiorina expected in O.C. to announce Senate bid

November 3rd, 2009, 3:41 pm · 52 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina is holding a town-hall forum in Garden Grove tomorrow, and says she’ll make a “major announcement” there - an announcement expected to be her declaration that she’s running for U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer.

Fiorina, long considered a possible candidate, could set the stage for an ideological battle with state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, R-Irvine, for the Republican nomination. DeVore is a hero to many conservatives, while Fiorina is expected by some to bring a more moderate approach to her campaign.

A Field Poll last month showed Fiorina and DeVore in a statistical dead heat among Republican voters. But Fiorina’s 21 percent and DeVore’s 20 percent revealed that most GOP voters were undecided. That poll also showed a swing in DeVore’s favor since March, when Fiorina was ahead of him by 12 percentage points.

Unlike Fiorina, who has recently emerged from a battle with breast cancer, DeVore has been actively campaigning throughout the year. But Fiorina has personal wealth she can now use to her advantage.

The GOP victor will then have an uphill battle against Boxer. According to last month’s Field Poll, the incumbent led Fiorina 49 percent to 35 percent, and led DeVore 50 percent to 33 percent.

Fiorina’s Garden Grove event will be held at Earth Friendly Products at 12570 Industry St., but attendance is by invitation only. The event will be Webcast live on Fiorina’s Web site, www.carlyforCA.com.

  • Debbie says:

So Fiorina who has voted about 5 times in her whole life thinks she should be a US Senator! What a joke!

Guess she thinks that our most sacred right and RESPONSIBILITY as US citizens is not of consequence because she has a lot of money!

Anyone who votes for her is slapping our rights and constitution in the face.

    • Joe says:

Debbie - Lets talk about a president who was elected after doing…………………..NOTHING!!! Now you’ve got a purple-lipped, big-eared Kenyan who is purposely destroying our economy, and you think that just because someone hasn’t voted they don’t deserve to be a SENATOR????

I’ll bet you’re an obummer voter. Stupid.

      • regularguy7 says:

Debbie raises a good point and it has nothing to do with the ¨Kenyan,¨you despise. A voting record is a good way to measure what an individual values politically and sometimes morally. You are waaay too obsessed with the Prez. Now, go back to that barn you were raised in and takes your meds Travis Bickle, or Joe, or whatever your name is.

        • SoCo Dave says:

I’ll be nice. “regularguy7″ and “Debbie”, aren’t you talking aout Whitman and a different political office bid in terms of voting record?

Fyi, the alternate choice to a Republican is a union-bought 70 year old dim-wit. I would have voted for either of the philanderer political who*es, both of whom dropped out, before I’d vote for imbecile Brown.

Take a look at his campaign funding @ the Secretary of States website. Why $6500 each for Brown from Carpenter’s Unions in Chicago, Philly, NYC, Honolulu, Indiana and New Jersey. If you don’t get it, continue voting Democrap and screw the next 4 or 5 future generations.

        • regularguy7 says:

SoCo Dave: Fiorina’s voting record has been described as “erratic and spotty,” making only five out of the last 18 elections. However, I was making a general comment about voting records and how another blogger ignored this valid point in favor of an attack on Obama. As for you other comment, I see no difference between a Democrap or a Republicrap. I think a much better idea is to make a choice outside of the little partisan boxes we seem to be trapped by and vote for the best qualified candidate regardless of political parties. The more we think and act for ourselves, the better.

  • Steve says:

She was *the worst* head of HP in history and now she wants to be a Senator?

    • logicisourfriend says:

Under Fiorina’s leadership, HP completed the process of spinning off its 1940’s founding tradition of electronic scientific equipment manufacturing into Agilent Technologies and then HP completed a controversial merger with rival PC maker Compaq in 2002. A year after joining Hewlett-Packard, Fiorina became the company’s chairman of the board but that same board forced Fiorina to resign from the company in 2005.

      Steve, what have YOU done?

    • alterego58 says:

Steve, don’ t be so hard on her, she only dropped the HP valuation in half, and didn’t capitalize on the market rebound.

  • formerdem says:

we need solid business people and smart intelligent un corruptable people to be our leaders. obama is a complete and utter failure. boxer must be replaced with a strong individual with high moral and ethics.

    • alleykat says:

What is a high moral? Do you mean a high morale or high morals? If you are looking for morals, steer clear of Carly. She thinks American jobs should rightfully go overseas.

        ==================================

Anyone who does not understand the NEED to rebuild our own manufacturing base has their head in the sand.

This country has gone downhill because the backbone of it, the middle class, has had their jobs shipped over seas to 3rd world countries that have no health, safety or other regulations that protect the worker, environment and country. Just look at China.

  • RepublicansAreLiarsandThieves says:

Why not an open forum rethuglicans? Afraid people like me will show up and call her out on her lies and hypocracy? She is a republic you know and thats just what they are known for and do. I will get my chance I promise you. LOL

  • Nancy says:

Sadly, there is little chance that either Republican challenger will be a threat to Boxer. California will become more, not less liberal in the coming years if the demographic predictions of a larger Latino electorate prove accurate. The Republican Party has some serious revamping in store if they can hope to appeal to the real “new majority.”

    • OC4truth says:

Well that may not be the case. Many people are not in favor of the health care “reform” bill being supported by the Dems without listening to what the public wants so if they go ahead and shove this through, more and more people will be voting against those who arrogantly supported it and didn’t care to listen to the rest of the public.

In addition, Latinos, with their strong family values should be naturals for the Republican party. With proper outreach, many more Latinos may realize that the Republican party more closely mirrors their values than does the Dem party.

      • mensarino says:

Wrong,oc4truth.The republican brand is anathema to the Hispanic voter. Thanks to prop 187 and some politically stupid antics over the years,Curt Pringle for example, the republican party can only hope to reach 30% or so of an ever increasing and reliably Democratic demographic.

Boxer will win going away no matter which republican is the sacrificial lamb.

      • regularguy7 says:

First of all, Latino family values differ markedly from GOP white conservative family values. The two groups find common ground when it comes to abortion and gay marriage but differ sharply when it comes to the treatment of the poor and social justice. The biggest problem for GOP conservatives is that Latinos aren´t white. The biggest problem for Latinos is that continuing waves of undocumented, low-skilled workers mask the real assimiliation that is going on. This lack of information gives way to ugly sterotypes and bigotry Latinos may forgive but are unlikely to forget. Actually, Latinos assimilate just as fast or almost as fast as other groups but immigration from Ireland, Italy, etc., eventually petered out. Latinos kept on coming until the economy and jobs went away. Instead of Latino judges, professors and lawyers, white conservative views of Hispanics are dominated by the guys on the corner waiting for work or chunky moms holding up traffic as they push strollers and shopping carts across the street.

        • Caconservagirl says:

You know, there is a Latino, Conservative Republican candidate running. His name is Al Ramirez and he is in Santa Monica. Last we he had a kick-off fundraiser at the NRSC Headquarters (which Carly keeps claiming that is who asked her to run). You should check him out and see what he has to say.

    • helping hand says:

Don’t blame it on the Latinos. Even Orange County is gradually becoming liberal (though at a slower pace than San Diego)

  • Roddy Reta says:

nancy, you wrote an intelligent comment! You have no place on this forum..

  • DWP says:

Carly is Meg’s twin. Like them both but they arent’ strong enough. Much better than Boxer but a far cry from what we need in this state.

  • Eric Cooper says:

Boxer wins by default, if Carly is the nominee

  • alleykat says:

Yuck. Carly “let’s censor the internet” Fiorina. Oh, also the “Americans have no right to jobs, outsourcing is great” Fiorina. No thanks.

  • cynthia says:

Well, every conservative since Bruce H has loss a senational bid. Maybe we should give the moderate a chance. Let’s face it, the conservatives are a losing cause in th state for senator or governor. And she is less of an evil than Boxer.

Yes, Nancy and sadly, the “new majority” that you allude to are more adept at graffiti, gang shootings and teenage pregnancy. To boot, very few ever finish high school let alone go to college (Except for Cal State Fullerton - AKA Latino Central) Where is the money going to come from to run all of the free handouts when your “new Majority” moves it?

    • mensarino says:

What a foolish and racist post……….generalize much?

When fools like you post such rot you turn off many who might have considered voting republican.Keep up the good work.

  • OC4truth says:

I’ll have to study up more on the candidates. Boxer may very well be vulnerable this time around if she and other Dems shove the massive health care takeover bill through.

    • Eric Cooper says:

what “massive health care takeover” is that? All she and her Dem collegues have done is engineer an expensive boondoggle that makes us keep the lousy present health care system that we have in order for her campaign donors to keeep banking billions of $$ in excess profit.

  • Mr NoSpin says:

    What!!!!!

This is the woman that was forced out as CEO of HP back in 2005 after her merger of HP with Compaq turned into a complete failure.

She was alleged to have orchestrated HP deals with Iran.

She was alleged to have Spyed on her employees.

She laid off over 18,000 HP jobs during her tenure.

Oh, and I am not a Democrat. I just call it as I see it.

There has to be a better canidate. If she runs against boxer there going to drag her under the bus with all the skeletons she has in the closet.

    • Obozo_The_Prez says:

Don’t forget that Fiorina had the audacity to say that people shouldn’t expect Corporations to provide them with jobs.

Guess what Fiorina don’t expect the public to provide you one either since your tenure at HP was an utter failure.

  • eviltwin says:

anybodys got to be better than boxer!

  • ConservativeBaller says:

She’s just another bored rich person looking for something to do…”Oh I know, I’ll get into politics!” If she’s really interested, maybe she should start small instead of jumping right into the frikkin’ Senate. We need someone who has political experience, is way smart and is doing pretty well in the polls against Boxer…that’s Chuck DeVore. Carly, save yer money, find another hobby and don’t dilute the GOP vote.

  • alterego58 says:

Did anyone read the last paragraph? Fiorina is announcing her candidacy at Earth Friendly Products.

  • Grunt41 says:

Devore I would prefer, but he does not have the name recognition in this state to oust Boxer. His name recognition in Orange County is limited. Fiorina’s name recognitition is much better and a strategic better choice with a better shot at removing Boxer, if it can be done.

  • Jonas says:

Boxer, Feinstein and Pelosi…I wonder what the rest of the country thinks of us? I’m voting Carly…

  • David Allen says:

Chuck DeVore should be the Republican candidate. He’s been busting his ass on the campaign trail for quite some time. Oh, and he’s actually voted more than a handful of times.

  • Kenneth M. Fisher says:

I am an American of Mexican heritage. My mother was born in Chihuahua, Chih., Mexico. What makes you all think that the all Mexicans are liberals. It was the Latino vote that put over Prop. 8. I know many Americans of Mexican dissent who voted for Prop. 8. In fact, over 40% of them voted for Prop. 8. Don’t let the so called moderate Republicans who are really liberal Republicans fool you with their claims that we lost other elections because of Prop. 8,

I served with Chuck Devore for eight years on the Orange County Republican Central Committee, and I found him to be one of the more reliablly conservative votes on that body that was controlled by Tom Fuentes.

    God have mercy on America,
    Kenneth M. Fisher

  • Peter J says:

Boxer replaced by Fiorina = going from worse to bad.

    Fiorina couldn’t run a top 50 company. She can’t represent a top 50 state.

  • OC CPA dude says:

It’s almost like the Republicans don’t even want to win. I am not a huge Boxer fan, but Fiorina is a joke. But then again, I am one of the few Californians who is willing to look at the candidates. Most of the people who post on here see Democrat and think bad, and see Republican and think good, or vice versa. If both parties were not so self-serving and corrupt I might actually be willing to vote for them once in a while.

  • Ralph says:

Fiorina was a disappointment at HP. I’d like to hear her explanation of what happened before writing her off. But, I’d still vote for anyone in any party before Boxer. We simply need to get rid of her, now! She’s horrible.

  • Adolph H says:

Boxer & Feinstein both hold CCW’s but nobody else can. They are both anti-gun if this new wing nut is less gun hostile stick her in. If not back to the kitchen for her too.

  • hamster says:

I would much rather deal with the DMV than HP customer service.

  • gdb says:

does carly know if she wants to get the republican nomination she needs to get permission from hockey mom? hockey mom may have let levi defile her daughter, but she will stand strong against rinos defiling the party and the constitution. that’s just how hockey mom rolls, dawg.

  • LEXUSRY says:

I HOPE SHE WIN. I AM TIRED OF LOOKING AT FAT-S POLITICIANS. THEY MOVED SO SLOW , WEAR OUT FURNITURES FASTER THAN THEY CAN HANDLE( FURNITURE HAS A WEIGHT LIMIT), AND UNHEALTHY WHICH COST TAYPAYERS MORE MONEY

  • David says:

    11/4/09

Carly Fiorina is unqualified for higher elected office, and the proof is there when one googles her name.

She’s a Stanford Globalist stuck on women’s issues who got fired from Packard. Excuse me.

In addition, remember : She was pro- illegal alien amnesty John McCain’s financial advisor ( RINOsaurus “John Mccain, you’re no Barney ” )

” Ding, dong, the witch is gone ! ” supposedley was one Hewlett Packard’s top officials after she was fired ffrom Packard. They said her leadership was terrible. She apparently pushed for the aquisition of Compaq without simply researching the move adequatley before going forward.

Dell at the time was the top computer manufacturer, and going on that
key point would have saved trouble.

Primaries are when Party bosses are over -ruled and bad candidates
are vetted. Now is the time to reject Carly Fiorina and choose the best and wise candidate with common sense for the good of America. That candidate is Chuck Devore.
