Self-proclaimed ‘Toughest Sheriff’ stumps for Bill Hunt

He’s the kind of sheriff who hunts down illegal immigrants with such enthusiasm that federal government officials personally ordered him to stop.
He’s the kind of sheriff who drags his feet on requests for public records and is constantly at the center of national controversy when it comes to civil rights, be it for making inmates sleep in tents, work on chain gangs or wear pink underwear.
And he is the kind of sheriff that candidate Bill Hunt is modeling himself after.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona is coming to Orange County on Nov. 5 to stump for Hunt, a former lieutenant who is making his second run at the office. Hunt is known for aggressively taking on former sheriff Michael Carona, now facing prison in a witness tampering case. And he has stepped up his campaign to unseat current Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, who was appointed to clean up the department.
Hunt makes no apologies for aligning himself with Arpaio, the subject of a Pulitzer Prize-winning expose by the East Valley Tribune in Mesa, Arizona (owned by Freedom Communications, owner of The Register). Reporters there showed how Arpaio’s aggressive anti-illegal immigration patrols came with a cost: slower response times in other areas. Overtime for the “human smuggling” unit sucked much needed money out of other crime-enforcement efforts.
And, the paper said, the department fell under federal investigation for suspicion of racial profiling as well as improper stops and search and seizures.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security ended a partnership with Arpaio to arrest illegal immigrants solely on their immigration status. Arpaio said he’ll keep doing it anyway.
Despite Arpaio’s storied wrestling match with the Constitution, Hunt makes no apologies for calling him a mentor.
“I’m not saying everying Arpaio has done is applicable to Orange County,” Hunt said. “But what I’m saying is when I’m sheriff we’re going to think outside the box and make changes (like Arpaio.).”
On the subject of illegal immigration, Hunt said: “Is the guy perfect? No. But what should we do, stick our heads in the sand and let our system collapse?”
The current policy of the sheriff’s department is not to round up illegal immigrants in the field, but to screen those who are brought into the jail and hold them for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Hunt said he would create a panel with activists from both sides of the issue to discuss how to better attack the illegal immigration problem.
Meanwhile, he is counting on Arpaio’s reputation to play well in Orange County, enough to fill his warchest. Reservations for the 6 p.m. fund-raiser at Anaheim’s Phoenix Club, 1340 S. In any case, Hunt says he’s not considering making Orange County inmates wear pink underwear — they’d clash with the orange jumpsuits.

I predict Bill Hunt will ride the wave of anti-illegal/anti-immigrant scapegoating and become the next Sheriff. I also predict it will cause increased inter-group conflict, an increase in mistrust of police by law abiding poor, legal and illegal latino immigrants, and greater fear and resentment of the white establishment by all latinos legal or not. Many latinos who are here legally, will be mistakenly targeted with little sympathy and no justice. The result is that Orange County will be revealed as the un-Christian, bigoted, narrow-minded community it truly is.

No one is going to freeze and we have more than enough land to erect tents and surround them with razor wire. But we’re tired of gimmicks. Show us the money, Bill! Just using Arpaio as your promotor and riding on his coattails falls way short of what we’re looking for!
Just think of all FREE brush clearance and the picking up of trash the prisoners on chain gangs could do! Talk about saving a lot of our tax $$$! Then they could dig in some pre-done fire lines in high danger areas, dig trenches for Cal Trans so they could work faster and cheaper…..Man! The county could save a LOT of $$$ limiting tv, making the prisoners work and use the money they earn to pay for their food. Hunt doesn’t have to integrate everything that Arpaio did, however even instituting 2-3 of the ideas would be a huge change to the system.

I agree: tent cities for the weekenders and non-violent offenders, but check out how much Sheriff Joe and Maricopa have had to pay out in law suits after leaving prisoners strapped in “restraint chairs” and letting them die there.

Actually, if you read Hunt’s proposed CCW policy, it reads exactly like Hutchens’ does. “I will issue to everyone who qualifies” is exactly what her restrictive policy says. There’s nothing to define the word “qualify.”

Let’s make this clear. I have workers too and prefer legal citizens.Sometimes you have to balance the work performance of every individual, not by his citizenship. What is not understood by many is that employers are willing to pay a higher pay, as long as the hired worker is able, has loyalty to the firm, honest, will not leave his post and most important will finish the job in time. If all citizens have those traits, believe me, no illegals will be employed in any part of this country.

Larry King called Mike Carona “America’s Sheriff”, so I am not sure if that would be a compliment. The fact is, very few inmates return to Sheriff Joe’s jails, and that is a good thing. He was ordered to provide cable T.V., so he put the Disney channel on. You gotta love him.

Bill Hunt is a leader with integrity. That’s why he’s no longer a member of the OCSD. He refused to stand by and watch as the OCSD came crashing down in the aftermath of it’s corrupt Sheriff.
Sheriff Joe knows how to run a jail, a jail where the inmates just about pay their own way, a jail where inmates fear going back. Not like in the OC, where they get everything free, medication, meals, housing, medical and psychiatric doctors on 24 call. It’s ridiculous. It’s a place where many do not mind returning. A second home, where they know they go when they get caught. I worked in there for many years and saw many of the same faces…………..over and over.
During this fiscal crisis, saving money is the name of the game. Sheriff Joe saves his county alot of money and he’s got the crooks relocating because they hate it in his jail. I for one would love to see many of the OC crooks relocate to a kindler gentler jail, once some of these new ideas are implemented.
I lived in the Phoenix area for four years and the illegals hate Sheriff Joe along with all the supporters of illegal immigration. I worked for the court system over there and saw 40% of crimes committed were due to illegals. Hopefully Hunt will have the opportunity to help OC.

How easy Hunt forgot that he came to the OC democratic party to request our support. I remember very vividly when he said that he was against allowing the county to be involved in immigration issues and was against the white paper presented by Carona. Shame on him for asking Joe Arpaio support, sincerely a big mistake. I remember also many conservatives supported Sheriff Carona because his stand in immigration, but look now what happen to him. I respected Hunt before but he lost my support. I will be against him and his campaign.

Hutchens may have been appointed to “clean up” the department. But instead of doing so she has just tied to turn it into the Orange county Divesion or LAPD.
The problem is LAPD style policing doesnt work in south Orange County. Orange county residents want Deputies out there catching bad guys. They don’t want the the Deputies afraid to do proactive work because even the most minor complaint can result in loss of income or their jobs.
Fear is not a leadership style. But that’s all Hutchins and Hillman offer.
Bill Hunt would make a great Sheriff who would be looked up to by the troops.

Immigration reform=holding anyone who comes into this country as a criminal and deporting them back so they can do it the RIGHT way…there is a process out there that works..maybe not as quick or fast as the illegals want it. but get it over it, there is a reason to allow only a certian amount of foreigners to receive green cards/permanent alien status….it’s not meant for the whole country of Mexico to come..The USA has a certian amount of quota set aside for various nationalities to become permanent aliens…Thanks to the influx of hispanic illegal immigrants, the educated and skilled employees from other non hispanic countries lose out….That is a burden to our system. Joe is the man! He’s the ONLY law officer that is actually enforcing the law. He’s tough BUT fair. I really like the fact that when the inmates used for cable TV he responded in a positive way: Disney Channel and Weather Channel. No violence or trash TV. He also puts them to work! We need MORE Sheriff’s like Joe in the USA! People will respect the law and we will be better off for his efforts! Way to go Joe!! Yep, I used to live in Phoenix and Joe’s approval rating is consistently over 90%. The man doesn’t even carry a gun because he doesn’t have to - citizens there will gladly defend him.

I read some of these post and it’s funny. One said Bil Hunt left OCSd cause he would not sit by and watch it crumble. The reality is he left cause he didn’t want the Deputy 2 pay. He left as a LT. Then another said Hutchens turned this into LAPD. Hey dummy, she was LASD and police are very proactive out here. Great you pointed out one thing, policing in LA is not like OC. OCSD patrol areas where little crime if any occur. They patrol no cities where crime is rampant, like Compton, Lynwood and so forth.
It is SES which dictates the level of crime. The problem is, OCSD tries to compete at a level of recognition they will never get. They are seen as a second fiddle agency with little or no respect from other OC police agencies. Which is quite the contrary for LASD and LAPD. Hubt will only bring the dept to the Abyss again.
Really? That’s funny. Almost every law enforcement professional in Orange County, that I know, cannot stand the LAPD. LASD is a little higher on the totem pole, however everyone agrees that Bratton and Baca, like all other LA brass before them, are all politicians (figureheads) that do whatever they are told to do by the Mayor. Not sure where you got your figures on how OC police agencies love LAPD/LASD. I personally know of at least 15 guys that hired on to either LAPD or LASD and couldn’t wait to lateral into any agency in Orange County to get away from that mess in LA.

The new OCSD Sheriff had the tents taken down? Dumb! Should be known those tents had A/C and Heaters in them. When I worked at Musick I was surprised to see that and many deps working there thought it was stupid that the inmates at Musick had a “Club-Med” tyke of life.

The feds are still attempting to strip Sheriff Joe of his power to enforce immigration laws, but so far to no avail. “marinevet0811′ is exactly correct. Tents were constructed at the Musick facility in 1985. It didn’t take long for the ACLU to file suit claiming the tents were too hot in summer and too cold in winter. Guess what… the County folded as usual and installed heaters and air conditioners.
The biggest fiasco occurred in ‘85 & ‘86 when the genius County planners bought a set of 78 trailers from an engineering camp in central Oregon and had them towed to OC by trucks. Once at the Musick Facility, they tore them all apart and made a compund out of them. An unbelievable waste of taxpayer money.
They could have built an adequate jail for far less instead of a fire trap that took years and lots of money to complete.
Anyone believing that the policy makers you elect are smart or looking out for you deserve what you get.
But I will say, you need a sheriff that will get the job done and not kow-tow to the Board of Supervisors, ACLU or any entity other than the Constitution and citizens they swear to protect.

A testosterone filled rally full of people who think the right to carry a gun in public is the issue that will put Bill Hunt over the top are sadly mistaken. In order for the voters to get the message that public safety is a problem, they have to feel unsafe. Sadly for the Hunt campaign that is not the case. Yes, in a general sense everyone wants their neighborhoods to be safe but most of us don’t feel like we need to carry a gun when we walk out of the door.
Bill Hunt might get more traction out of an illegal immigrant platform but even then it’s not enough for him to succeed. I’m sure his supporters will shout me down on this blog but in the end I’ll be proven right. History will show that Hunt was in a prime situation the last time around when Sheriff Carona’s scandals were breaking weekly. Even then, with all of the media coverage it went nowhere.
Sheriff Hutchens may not be the perfect candidate and she has certainly opened herself up to criticism but she does come across as an honest person with not even a hint of corruption. Say what you will, but she’s going to be tough to beat.

There has never been a “rally” to carry a gun in public around here unless you are refering to that spectacle at the Board of Supervisors meeting where Hutchens’ swat team sought to intimidate the Second Amendment people from voicing their displeasure with Hutchens’ policies to their elected officials.

Hunt didn’t lose the lawsuit, I was there and heard jurors state that he won the lawsuit, but the Judge tossed it out before. Why would she allow them to deliberate before making a critical decision? There is a connection.
Also, consider Hunt lost the last election by 1 percent which would have forced a run off.
I also know the Feds were well up Carona’s a** three years prior to the 2006 election, and Carona knew it.
While Brad Gates was too strict, kept the department from advancing, and had his own pervert (LaDucer), the Carona administration was in essence a group of Hippies without any experience.
So, what to do? Do we elect Hunt that was a close 2nd, and has a measured amount of experience or roll the dice again?

I heard that as soon as the judge got the impression that the jury was going to clobber Carona she dismissed the case based on “qulified immunity” I was wondering why she couldn’t figure that out before the jury got the case. Then I heard she was a Democrat Activist judge appointed by Clinton and endorsed by Barbara Boxer. She couldn’t get Senate approval for like 2 years because of concern about her activism (eg substituting her veiws in place of the law) I also heard that the jury was livid that the judge keep them there all that time only to take the decision from them. Did you see any of that?

I read one post a while back that a man said he didn’t get involved, didn’t even realized the problem until watching vigils on T.V.demanding amnesty. Whoever the next sheriff is he or she need to understand who the boss is. It’s not the BoS. It’s not the rank ‘n file deputies. It’s not the corrupted public employees union. It’s the one who pay the frieght - the taxpayers of Orange County. When they start to realize that and act accordingly everything will fall into place. Hutchens just doesn’t seem to get it. She places the taxpayer at the bottom of her priority list. That has been more than obvious for the last year. She views the taxpayer as a necessary distraction. And that viewpoint will get her ousted in the next election. I’ve always thought that we need a civilian to head the sheriff’s department. Someone who can distance him or herself from the union and rank ‘n file to serve the real boss - the taxpayer. Someone who brings back the ‘higher standard’ that police departments were known for years ago. Today the OCSD has a lower standard. Things that a civilian would lose his job over and go to jail for the deputies get a pass. That’s why most have lost our respect for the way these organizations are run. They play by their own lax set of rules and then tell us that the enforcers are held to a ‘higher standard’. Hogwash. Don’t point to a duck and try to convince us it’s a rabbit. None of us buy it anymore. You’ve lost your credibility.

The wife works at a restaurant in OC. Most all the employees are illegal, most are hard workers, all have fake SS cards that bypass the Homeland security check with ease. The wife really likes him but can’t hire him because she has no openings, so she calls around to colleagues who are pretty much in the same situation. People are tired of the Democrat/Republican snipping, STOP IT. One can not debate an issue with name calling and accusations. It is facts. This is about change. The federal government has let the borders go unprotected for far to long and California and other border states pay a high price. We all pay a high price. We need to follow the constitution and the laws. What was said earlier is true. These people are not illegal immigrants. They are ILLEGAL ALIENS which I see being supported by our local unions. As a union employer I was forced by the union to hire illegal aliens with false documents.
Our Country needs to be cleaned out from the top to the bottom. Vote in people who follow the laws and are not beholding to special interest and big money. That means most will go. It is time to stand up for our children and our way of life. As a mexican-american it would seem that you would blast the mexican government for not addressing the needs of it’s underclass and instead dumping them in our backyard so your taxdollars get spent caring for them. And like the previous poster stated, the mexican government strictly enforces it own immigration laws on its southern border, much more stringently than we do, yet you don’t assert that they are somehow racist for doing so.
