Signature tally underway in O.C.-based recall of assemblyman

October 23rd, 2009, 12:53 pm · 15 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

The Orange County-based recall of Assemblyman Anthony Adams, R-Hesperia, has gathered enough signatures for the verification process to begin, Secretary Of State’s Office spokeswoman Nicole Winger said Thursday.

So far, 38,996 signatures have been reported to the state office, with an unknown number still being awaited. A total of 35,825 valid signatures are needed to put the recall on the ballot. Because the minimum threshold has been reached, the 30-day random sampling of the signatures has begun.

Recall activists, led by Corona del Mar attorneys Mike Schroeder and Lee Lowrey, are hunting their fellow Republican because Adams was one of six state legislators who joined Democrats in approving a February budget update that included tax hikes. Recall advocates say Adams betrayed his signed pledge not to support more taxes.

Adams has responded by saying, ““two very wealthy Orange County men who care less about our community and more about their own political ambitions. They want us to pay $900,000 in our hard earned tax dollars to pay for another election and their partisan political games.”

Adams district straddles Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, and does not include any of Orange County.

The last state legislator recall attempt to qualify for the ballot targeted Sen. Jeffrey Denham, Senate District 12, in 2008, according to the Secretary of State’s Office The last legislator recall attempt to qualify for the ballot and succeed was Assembly District 67, Assemblywoman Doris Allen, in 1995.

Give him the boot! Shame on the politicians in Sacremento for raising our taxes. Good job kicking us while we are down. Where’s our bailout? Oh wait we dont get one.. But instead about we can all just take it in the shorts. Suck!

  • ocobserver says:

Too bad we only got one. There are at least a dozen who deserve the boot. But maybe this will put the rest on notice. But Adams will end up getting a cushy appointment to a state commission job ($175k) by the club executives after he gets ousted. He probably made sure to get that promise in writing before voting for the tax increase.

  • Brian says:

People need to grow up. How does a million dollar recall help the state’s economy? He is up for reelection soon. His term is only two years. What a waste.

    • ocobserver says:

We have to treat them like children and let them know there are consequences for lying. Otherwise our democracy is a joke. What would stop anyone from making false promises during the campaign and betray the ones who give them money and votes??? This is not a fight against Adams as much as it is a fight for democracy.

Hey ocobserver - I had to chuckle when I read your post. Obama lied to us. So it starts from the top down. But to keep with this story, Adams should be the first to go and then we look around and see who else needs to be booted off the team.

  • American1776 says:

Mr. Adams…… if you’re so worried about the $900,000 it will take to get your lying backside out of office then do your constitutes a favor and resign. But you aren’t going to do that are you? So as you showed us you have absolutely no concern about your own integrity, and had no qualms about stealing more of our lives so those in Sac. could continue to wasting our tax dollars, enough of us ie. taxpayers in your district have decided we don’t mind spending our tax dollars to put you in the unemployment line with approx. 12% of the people that voted for you. To quote another piece of elected scum in this State, “It’s going to happen, whether you like it or not.”

  • lincoln says:

good job John and Ken! You really went out to make this happen!

  • Alberto says:

He signed no new taxes pledge - knew exactly what he was doing. More, he stated that he would vote for more taxes if he has to. There is Jeff Miller also to take are off.

    Heads on the stick!

  • OCCent says:

Rats, I’m not in his district. He gets the big fat boot from me.

  • homer92630 says:

It would be nice if they could get the queen bee and her evil sister out as well. What have Feinstein and Boxer done for the state of California at all; besides create national parks with restricted public access?

    • WhyCare says:

Boxer’s senate seat is up for election in 2010. We MUST vote her out! She is all about spending; just look at the bills she is constantly presenting. And.. I’m just saying… notice how the most extreme wackos seem to come from San Franciso? Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein, Newsome Yikes!

  • Bob Holt says:

I believe Senator Lou Correa sign the same tax pledge and did the same thing Anthony Adams did. But he’s a Democrat and we don’t expect the same standards.

  • glow22 says:

Adams’ response to the recall effort mirrors that of Mission Viejo’s MacLean’s response. Quit whining and start listening to the people you represent, all of you.
