Field Poll: Brown way out front in governor’s race

October 12th, 2009, 12:17 pm · 38 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

If you haven’t yet seen last week’s Field Poll, Jerry Brown has a 20 point lead over fellow Democrat Gavin Newsom (47% to 27%), and even a bigger lead over each of the three GOP candiates (50% to 29% over Meg Whitman, 48 percent to 27 percent over Tom Campbell, 50% to 25% over Steve Poizner).

In the race for the Republican nomination, it’s Whitman at 22%, Campbell at 20%, and Poizner at 9%.

In the unexpected case of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein entering the race, she has the advantage over Brown 40% to 27%.

Meanwhile, Sen. Barbara Boxer appears to be cruising to reelection.

Boxer is ahead of Irvine’s Chuck DeVore 50%-33%, and ahead of Carly Fiorina 49%-35%. DeVore and Fiorina are in a virtual dead heat for the GOP nomination, but 50% of GOP voters are undecided. Click here for that poll.

At this point I think I will vote for Brown.

    My reasoning?

Brown is 72 years old. After this race his political ambitions are over. He knows if elected this will very possibly be his last term and NO ONE WILL OWN HIM. Consequently, he is MOST LIKELY the one who will make the needed changes.

Not Poizner, not Whitman, not Newsome……ALL OPPORTUNISTS.

Brown has the experience and hopefully the GUTS to do what’s right without sucking up to all the special interests.

At this time, he’s my choice even though I think he’s weird.

    • tomasina says:

They all scare me. Some more than others. Brown may be the best, and that is really sad. He did not do California any favors the last time he was in office.

    • Jc says:

Count me in..because I will vote for Brown for all of the above.
      So ocobserver well said.

    • ED says:

Geezus. The lesser of the evils–once again. Pathetic. OC, what makes you think he won’t live to be 90 and suffer the people of Mexifornia for another two terms?

      • ocobserver says:

Ed, listen friend. We voters are again caught between a rock and a hard place. This is yet another one where we are forced to choose between Dracula and Frankenstein. Notice that I don’t even mention issues anymore with these scoundrels. Now I have to try to predict who will croak first and therefore not have as much skin in the game as the others. Is that desperation? Sure it is. But the State and the entire Country is on the verge of collapse unless we find some leaders fast. Unfortunately it’s the same old shysters who throw their hats into the ring. Most of the candidates couldn’t find their own hind ends with both hands and a flashlight. I don’t see one who could dig us out of the hole. On the contrary they would just throw more dirt over top of us. If anyone else has any better idea than picking the oldest one and pray that he turns on the special interest groups let me know. I’m stumped!

        • ED says:

OC, you’re absolutely right. I spent my entire life growing up (SM) and living in (HB) So Cal, and we still own a house in OC, but we don’t vote in the PRC anymore. We now spend most of the year where it’s green and people wave with 5 fingers. So why do I care? We still have a property interest in California, and I still care about what happened to my home. But please give a friendly wave to the snowbirds with out-of-state plates. I’ll wave back……….with all 5 fingers.

    • OC CPA dude says:

Interesting point. I may be persuaded likewise. I do however think that Campbell is a pretty genuine and straightforward candidate. Is there something I am missing here about him?

All I know is if the Republicans put Whitman up, she doesn’t have a chance.

    • Howard be my name says:

Brown is actually “only” 71, though it’s true he’ll be 72 by election day.

    • Wade says:

My 78 year-old aunt is a lifelong Republican and she said she is going to vote for Brown. She admires him and his father. I have dim memories of his governorship from when I was a child. He has always seemed to be his own man, smart and capable and with vast knowledge of the state and how to get things done. I think the race is his to lose.

    • Tax guy says:

I guess you may not be old enough to remember the job he did the first time. Myane age has made him wiser, but also runs as a disadvantage for him. I remember the how the state was run before and though now is not a good time, Is he strong enough?

  • Windfall says:

Moonbeam Brown’s “Era of Limits” philosophy is exactly what launched California on the very trajectory that has landed us in our current mess. A Hair of the Dog Governor will only hasten our descent into Third World status, i.e., a whole lot of government dependent poor scuffling about outside a few gate-guarded communities of oligarchs.

  • se says:

    is his nickname still “Moonbeam”

    • jphmedia says:

Mike Royko, a reporter from Chicago called him ‘Moonbeam’ after Brown floated the idea of buying a satellite for statewide emergency communication services. This was 1978, I believe. Turns out California DID buy a transponder on a commercial satellite in the 80’s and it is one of the most effective communications tools used in state government. Many other states have copied the idea ‘Moonbeam’ came up with. Brown was just a few years ahead of his time, with far more ‘vision’ than the average Chicago journalist.

Rokyo later recanted and apologized for his slur against Governor Brown and admitted that Brown had a vision and style of leadership that was rare and valuable.

  • mensarino says:

Brown will win both the Democratic nomination and the general election in a breeze. The competition is weak and he has years of experience.

  • ocobserver says:

And don’t you liberal dems ever call me a neo-con or a republican baghandler again. I told you I’m voting for Brown and I gave you my reasons. The only way I would change my mind is if someone better enters the race or Brown does or says something really stupid that peeves me off. In that case I vote for nobody.

I told you before. I am the voice of reason on these boards. Completely non-partisan. I make my decisions based on ‘right vs wrong’ as opposed to ‘republican vs dem vs libertarian’.

  • Richard Deight says:

    Those amazing Browns:

“We’re going to move left and right at the same time.” —Jerry Brown (governor of California, 1973-1982)

“This is the worst disaster in California since I was elected.” —Pat Brown (governor of California, 1959-1977), discussing a flood

“At least when I was governor, cocaine was expensive. —Jerry Brown

  • f4tweet says:

Gov’ner Moonbeam again. That’s all we can do?

  • Eliz says:

Meg Whitman can save herself lots of $$$$ if she will just drop out! Not being a voter for several elections is the killer. She just decides when she wants to be political. I actually do that also, but I’m not going to run for public office.

  • Matt says:

at least moonbeam has some experience and integrity, and bill clinton hates him, thats gotta stand for something.

  • Vicky says:

Richard Deight said it all. I like Tom Campbell.

    • mensarino says:

Of all the republicans he has the best chance but no republican can win in Cal, in the foreseeable future, unless it’s another RINO like Arnold. The demographics doom republicans.

  • Kevin says:

Tom McClintock, if he is running!!

    • OC CPA dude says:

LOL! He is running under the pseudonym of Meg Whitman. Might as well not show up to vote if you are going to vote for Meg Whitman/Tom McClintock. They are both more interested in representing the Republican Party than their constituents. Neither have a chance.

    • jphmedia says:

Oh god, not Tom, please no. If I see another of his offensive ‘Im a scot and I’m CHEAP’ ads with the ersatz kilt, tam-o-shanter and fake bagpipes again I’m going to sue him. The last pathetic attempt to get elected in any office other than a gerrymandered district was a very expensive, grotesque mockery of the political process. The ads had all the production value of a use car midnight tv spot with none of the down-home, ‘jes-folks’ hokum of the real thing.

Please, no more Tom. Allow him to fade away. Perhaps to Scotland.

  • ocbear says:

Gavin Newsom? Jerry Brown? Yuck, scary choices. The Bay Area has been dominating California politics for a long time and that’s what got the state into such a mess. Let’s bring in politicians from other parts of the state.

    • Wade says:

Actually, George Deukmajian is from Long Beach, Pete Wilson is from San Diego, and Gray Davis and Arnold hail from LA. CA politics is dominated by Southern Californians for the most part. SFBA is just too far to the left for most voters in the state, contrary to our reputation. That is why Newsom doesn’t stand a chance (for which liberal yours truly is grateful).

  • LoCicero says:

I’ve been in most states of the Union, but when I arrived in California I told the man I eventually married that Californians were the stupidest electorate I had ever encountered. (I’m not making this up, I really said that).

That was 20 years ago, and Californians have only gotten more stupid with the years.

The state is bankrupt, but apparently the news hasn’t reached California yet. (Maybe it’s stuck in some satellite somewhere). Most citizens are oblivious of this fact; look around for yourselves and observe that the majority really has no clue.

So it’s hopeless to point out that the Democrats have controlled the state for years and they’re directly responsible for our fiscal disaster.

In most states - at least in the heartland - at this point or long before, the voters would have kicked out the ruinous incumbents and voted in the opposition.

But that doesn’t seem to happen in Democratic states like ours, Taxachussetts, and New Jersey (although in the latter they’re usually removed from office by being sent to jail).

There’s appears to be a ratchet effect on both coasts: Once a state or city falls to the Democrats it continues going downhill until economic disintegration occurs, but apparently there’s never any going back.

The pendulum just doesn’t seem to work in these areas, so the correct attitude for you is resignation. All you can do is stop the Democrats in 2010 from transferring their fiscal insanity to the nation as a whole. Just defeat Barbara Boxer for the US Senate but suffer your self-inflicted wounds in silence in California.

  • LoCicero says:

    Correction:

When I said defeat Barbara Boxer, I did not mean vote for Carly Fiorina. She’s simply another toothless big government Republican.

I think it’s self-evident that we need a third party in California that will advance practical solutions from a libertarian viewpoint.

(But not the current adolescent Libertarian party - I said PRACTICAL solutions).

Who wants to start a new California Party?

  • Bob Holt says:

Look at the polls people. If Feinstein entered the raise she would beat Brown. Hold on to your wallets because were in for another roller coaster ride. Lets see, if Feinstein drops out of the senate to run for governor then Schwarzenegger can appoint himself as senator.

I wonder if Hollywood will make a horror movie of this?

    • ocobserver says:

Oh gawd please. Don’t throw big hair di-fi into the mix. She would be the worst of them all. She’s as corrupt as they come. Didn’t you know that she doesn’t even sit on a finance committee in Congress and authored a Bill to bailout the FDIC and less than a week after the Bill passed di-fi’s husband was awarded a lucrative FDIC contract to manage foreclosures in the western states??? hah! She falls within the ranks of Chris Dod and Bwaney Fwranks! She would be the final nail in California’s coffin if she were to move into the governor’s mansion!

  • Jerry says:

So Jerry Brown is leading in the polls; just when I thought California couldn’t possibly get any nuttier.
