Poll: Here’s Obama’s speech to students. What do you think?

The White House just posted President Barack Obama’s talk to school children that will be piped into classrooms across the nation tomorrow at 9 a.m. pacific time. Click here to read it.
Obama’s will tell students that no matter how good their teachers or how vigilant their parents, that they must also take responsibility for making sure they get a good education.
“We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect so you can help solve our most difficult problems. If you don’t do that – if you quit on school – you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country. “ Obama will say from a high school in suburban Washington, D.C.
Obama’s decision to give this back to school speech drew fire from some Republican Party officials, lawmakers and parents, some of whom say they will keep their children home from school. Some districts have said they don’t plan to show the speech.
Critics have labeled the idea as political. I read through the speech and there’s not one word in there about any of Obama’s policy ideas. It’s basically a pep talk to kids.
“And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you – don’t ever give up on yourself,’ the prepared remarks say. ” Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
“The story of America isn’t about people who quit when things got tough. It’s about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best.”

If my kid was still school age she would not be allowed to watch this in our home district. Seems a shame to have to keep your kids home from school to allow them to listen to the president’s speech in real time. Especially a speech about staying ing school…

Actually, the New York Times reports that while the White House projects the total debt at $9 trillion by 2011, $6 trillion is debt Obama inheireted from Bush administration policies passed passed during 43’s time in office. Funny how Obama gets the blame for debt accrued by Bush.

CRseagull, no kidding! I listened to the speech this morning. He addressed personal responsibility, hard work, and staying in school. If that is brainwashing, then I hope a lot of kids are brainwashed today!
Show me a single objectionable paragraph in the speech.
The only reason these parents want to keep their kids from listening to Obama is because they’ve been working so hard to build him up as a horrible boogeyman in their children’s eyes. If their children are allowed to actually hear and see him first-hand, they’ll see he’s not a mad muslim socialist spawn of Satan.
That’s also the reason FOX is the only network that won’t run most of Obama’s speeches.
How about a Line Item veto instead?

Fox runs all of Obama’s speeches, it’s the other networks that don’t tell you both sides of the equation, all they tell you is the liberal side.
Faux news media did not show the president’s speech. Instead, there were cuts, copy, and edited inserts that were distorted by Faux news as usual to spew more of their hate mongering illogical perception of the Obama Administration.
I too believe it to be a fine speech. I don’t know if it was modified after all the hoopla but originally the lesson plan distributed by the Department of Education led one to the conclusion that the speech was to be all about Obama. ‘How can you help the president?’ etc.
**I believe it probably did, and still does, suggest that children “help the President.” I think the disconnect is that he was NOT talking about himself. He gave examples of former students who had helped society, and future presidents, by studying hard, applying themselves, and creating a better world. Really, people. How is an 8 year old going to be of any use to Obama during his eight year administration? He’s exhorting children to think of how they can contribute to their AMERICAN society.
How fast did one forget that there was a slight REVISION?
Folks, it’s NOT ABOUT THE SPEECH—it’s about the QUESTIONS he was going to ask but got changed because others objected. The speech, of course, sounds all sweet and sugar coated, but what the uproar is about is that his prior intentions were to ask the children to “write to themselves how they would support the president.” But that’s all changed because conservatives stood up to take a stand against Obama spreading his support propaganda. Well, some people don’t support the president, nor do they want their children being forced to. How can anyone support a president who has done the opposite of almost everything he’s promised in the 9 months of his term, as well as wants to dismantle the Constitution of the United States? So, that’s what the uproar is about, not his pretty little speech. Of course, Obama supporters are now going to sugar coat the entire event. Let’s not publish the original questionnaire! God bless conservatives who are speaking up and want to save this country from a socialist president and his agenda.

Listen, I am no Obama fan or cheerleader. He’s already broken over a dozen of his campaign promised that got him elected to office. In my opinion he’s more of the same, led primarily by big money and not the interests of the American people. He’s pretty much given all the Wall Street criminals who drove the country into the ground economically a big fat pass. So he’s like all the rest. But it is completely disingenuous for the conservative partisan hacks to attack this fine presentation that Obama delivered to the school children of America. And it is totally hypocritical for the conservative parents to put pressure on the schools to ban his presentation. Like it or not, the President of the United States is a role model for the children. This entire speech stressed for the children to stay in school, study hard and make something of themselves while providing examples of people (like himself) who overcame obstacles placed in their paths along the way and succeeded. Now what is wrong with that when HALF of the kids in Los Angeles drop out and fail high school? Our educational system is in shambles. Quality has dropped significantly in the last few decades. I applaud Obama in his effort to motivate the kids. And anyone who picks apart or attacks his speech is simply not a patriotic american looking out for the best interests of our beloved country!

For those who keep repeating what the current admin hasn’t done, let’s not forget that he previous admin is the main reason we had a financial meltdown by allowing manipulation in the market by removing any effectiveness of the SEC, and let’s not forget it was that admin who wanted to give us the option to us the stock market as a means to fund social security.

This was a non-political, highly inspirational and uplifting speech. I wish someone would have given the same speech to me when I was in school. Although moderately successful, it may have made my life even more so. Parents shouldn’t complain, they should be thankful that the President of the United States (whoever that may be), inspires their children to stay in school, and encourages them to do their best.
I wonder how many parents have said any of the words that Obama spoke to their children? These days most parents do none of the things they should do toward education. Sure they will take the kiddies to ‘games’ but how much time do they spend encouraging them in their school work?
Oh, and let me tell you what scares these ultra conservative parents the most. They’ve been demonizing Obama to their children and telling them what a bad guy he is. The parents are afraid that the kids will watch this video and afterwards say to themselves “gee, what are mom and dad talking about? Obama seems to be a pretty nice guy to me. He’s just asking me to stay in school, study hard, stay away from bad influences and become a successful person. What’s wrong with that?”. The parents are afraid that their fabrications and exaggerations would be exposed. Therefore, they want to shelter their children from watching a video from the President of the United States encouraging education and success! hah! BR, I keep telling myself that the rampant Obama hate can’t be race-driven. Yet, what else could the reason be? There is no logical reason for it at all. Obama said it was the government’s responsibility to set high standards for education. No it’s not.
He encouraged students to become politicians. They can do better than that.
He pushed working for others instead of starting your own business. That’s where the real money is.
He should have talked about how important it is to make lots of money.
He talked about making America “more fair”. He’s a commie. He wants equallity when he should push for opportunity. We are not equal and some are bound to do better than others. They should not have their money taken from them by force (taxes) and given to others who don’t do as much.
He should have mentioned that they should wait to get married and have kids. Get some money first. Kids are expensive. Get your life on track first.
All schools should be private anyway. How can you teach students the evils of a large, powerful government when they run the schools.

The best thing about this speech is that teachers will gain an invaluable tool: those students held back from school that day are the ones who have “special” needs.

I wish I could get a copy of it before I make a comment. If he is just going to tell kids to stay in school I see no problem, but most liberals can’t help themselves and I feel there maybe hidden agendas. Reagan, Bush and Clinton all addressed school kids, but never asked kids to write letters or get on the Obama team. I guess we will see what happens on Tuesday.

I have read the speech and it is both encouraging and hopeful. Today’s kids need to know that there are many, many people who are relying on their succeeding. We need a cure for cancer, AIDS and someone who will be able to lead our country in the future. Every one of those people are now sitting in a classroom. Encouragement comes from many areas of our lives and having the President (whether you agree with his politics or not) encourage you may be the catalyst necessary for that one or two students to succeed.
Please, read the speech before you make rash comments or judgments. It truly is uplifting and inspirational. Even if you don’t agree with President Obama’s views, I trust you will agree with his attempt to encourage success in our youth.

Nice speech for middle school and above. Younger kids will lose track of what he is talking about. Am sure it’’s not a secret with educators that they have shorter attention spans just for starters. Ok, if that is indeed the speech that will be given and the “what can I do for …” exercise is dropped, I can agree that the speech itself is harmless enough. A bit long-winded and boring, a little too much “I and me” from Obama for my taste, and a few things that I would like to see worded differently. But basically nothing blatantly political or partisan.
The problem I have with this speech is why does Obama believe that a speech beamed to the kiddies is necessary in the first place? I would put the same question to any President regardless of party. To me it represents a growing mentality that many of our elected leaders seem to have, a mentality that government knows best and government needs to intrude into every facet of our lives. I mean seriously, isn’t everything in this speech something that parents should instill into their children, at the proper time and place, without government intervention? Why anyone believes that Obama and his Fearless Leader moment is truly a good idea is beyond me.
So why should president give the speeches at all? To children, workers, veterans,all citisens, anybody? He should just sit in a bunker like good old VP Dick, and fondle the red button.
Because some speeches have merit and value and are given to the appropriate audience at the appropriate time. Maybe you do not see the difference between a Presidential speech given via a television broadcast that can be turned off or being given at an event that an individual can choose to attend or not, versus a Presidential speech beamed to a bunch of captive schoolchildren with no choice in the matter. I, however, make a distinction between the scenarios.

The current failings of American education is not a “mentality,” it is a fact. (A really obvious fact.) Opining that parents “should” do a bunch of stuff to help children succeed is fine — but worthless with respect to the millions of parents who don’t do that. By the way, to my knowledge, neither this administration nor two others I am familiar with has ever released a text of a presidential speech beforehand. Usually we get this information either right before or right after a president speaks.

A speech is one thing, showing a concurrent video with actors pledging themselves as followers of the president is another. I think our president should be working on more critical issues and stop making so many speeches. And to boot, they want a cap-and-trade (Cap & Con & Tax) plan that will cripple business, decimate jobs, and add $1500-$3000 per year in extra energy costs to the average American family.

Why would somebody who was just elected president want to “bankrupt” or otherwise harm the country he has just been put in charge of? He wants to make sure he doesn’t get re-elected in 4 years?
I don’t find anything objectionable in the speech. Here’s what I do find objectionable:
Obama’s past affiliation with Bill Ayers and his association, the Chicago Annenburg Challenge, which promotes education as a way to indoctrinate young radicals. When is Obama going to tell the kids that he put their parents out of work, wrecked their medical system, doomed their grandparents to an early grave and put them and their children, and their children permanently in debt? When is he going to come clean and tell them that he will have them living under a communist government before the end of his first term? When will he tell them that if they work hard, half of what they earn will be taken to “spread the wealth” to the lazy who want his government to support them? When is he going to tell them that their “freedoms” were only an illusion and they must depend on the government for direction? He has no understanding of what makes this country great. After his “Im sorry America is so screwed up” tour of Europe, he is not to be trusted. Read his speech, do you find any mention of America as the greatest country in the world? An America that has spent more money and sacrificed more lives in the cause of freedom than any other county in history. An America that has been the beacon of hope for untold millions the world over. Did he ever mention that kids in school here have more opportunity to be successful than probably anywhere else in the world? Nope, don’t go looking, because your not going to find any reference that he is proud of this country. A Manchurian Candidate could not have done more harm to our economy if he tried. To all you parents that feel it is your duty to teach your children right from wrong and to be wary of the man behind the curtain, God bless you all, to all the others whose main diet is Kool Aid, wake up before it is to late. OH My Goodness, people have too much time on their hands to gripe about this. If my kids were still in school I would have supported this speech to them. They need all the encouragement they can get. I didn’t vote for Obama, but as americans we need to teach our kids to support who the people voted for and at least listen to what he has to say and make their own decisions. Our country is so screwed up and it happen before Obama was elected and he isn’t helping fix it. We Americans have our priorities so jacked up we are a dying breed.

Obama cannot focus on one subject, yet he’s speaking to the youth of America. Everyday this guy takes up a new issue. He’s got to slow down and focus. He’s got 4 years and he’s trying to turn this whole thing around in a few months. He lost my support when he started acting like he’s got a chronic case of ADD.

I have great concern and it is not over the President speaking to children. (It’s been done before.) My concern is the recent divide among Americans. It has been a very methodical method of divide and conquer. You cannot take a majority win (democracy) and in just 6 mo divide the country. If the election had been close then I think it would be possible. Healthcare was not this big of an issue just 6 mo ago. It’s not within a natural political cycle. Lincoln, perhaps our greatest President warned us of this. He said that it would not be a foreign nation that would cause the fall of the US but from within. I think American’s should stop fighting each other and fight whoever/whatever is desperately trying to cause the fall of the US.
Too bad the majority of kids that need to hear this, cant understand english.
If he stays on topic, reads the teleprompter and doesn’t stray from the prompter like he did when he said the police acted stupidly, I don’t have a problem with what he is saying.
All of us should be responsible for our actions, without the need for government intervention.

Again, the problem here is NOT about his sugar-coated speech, but the “QUESTIONNAIRE” he had put together to ask kids to support him, that he had to CHANGE and revise after wise conservatives found out. They will not publish the truth about what was on the “original” questionnaires so all conservatives will look like idiots. Well, the originals will be published soon and everyone will see why there’s an uproar. Too bad the leftist media has hidden the truth from the people. That would make Obama look bad. i watched the speeches on C-SPAN of Bush senior and Reagan….then i watched President Obama’s speech and came to the conclusion that there was a lot of hub-bub about nothing. no, i did not vote for him.
Obama is the “salesmen” of the Democrat Party’s ideology and their plans for America. I doubt he has much to do with anything else. How could he? He is shuffled off most every day to some state or part of the World to deliver a sales pitch written by his Party’s speech writer. He has made more public speeches than days in office. Seriously! And today liberals are banking on him to deliver a whopper, because people are finally waking up to the fact this Administration is not what we hoped it would be. It has put us further into debt, not been able to revive the economy or stop job losses, can’t even adequately administer the Cash for Clunker program, ignored most of their campaign promises, and has major problems doing something as simple as “vetting” the president’s advisors. They have lost my trust, and there is no way I want to entrust them with something as important as my health care. There has to be better way of making health care more affordable and attainable then a government run and controlled solution. The old cliche “jumping from the pan into the fire” best describes my concerns.
