Setting the stage for what is expected to be one of the nation’s hottest Congressional races of 2010, Assemblyman Van Tran announced today that he will challenge seven-term Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez.
Tran had been recruited heavily by Washington GOP leaders, who consider central Orange County’s 47th Congressional District one of their best chances for gaining a seat next year.
“Both sides will be pouring resources into this,” Tran said in anticipation of a heavily funded drive.
Democrats have a 12.4 percentage point advantage in the central county district and Sanchez is popular there, winning by 44 percentage points in 2008, 25 percentage points in 2006, and 21 percentage points in 2004. And Barack Obama carried the district last year, but Arnold Schwarzenegger won there in 2006 and George W. Bush won there in 2004.
Sanchez indicated she was ready to take on Tran.
“I’ve always welcomed a spirited debate about the issues confronting our communities,” Sanchez said in an email responding to Tran’s announcement today. “I have always been an independent voice for the people of Orange County, and with every vote I’ve cast, I always put the people of Orange County first. I have consistently fought hard to make our communities safer, improve our schools, protect our seniors, create jobs, and lower the tax burden on the middle class.”
But Sanchez isn’t the only one trying to sound a non-partisan note.
“Tran transcends Republican politics, and he will be able to reach out to independents and moderate Democrats,” said Rep. Kevin McCarthy, head of recruitment for the National Republican Congressional Committee, in an interview with Politico.com. “This is one of the top people I’ve gone after since the very beginning.”
Sen. John McCain, House Minority Leader John Boehner and Minority Whip Eric Cantor also encouraged Tran to run.
The area has twice as many Latinos as Vietnamese Americans, but Vietnamese Americans turn out to vote in greater numbers - so much so that the two top vote getters in the county supervisor race there have been Vietnamese Americans in the two most recent elections.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee - Democrats’ counterpart to the NRCC and a likely source of major campaign funds -
noted that Sanchez has been particularly attentive to that concerns of the Vietnamese community.
“From Day One, Congresswoman Sanchez has worked hard to be an independent voice for her constituents in Orange County, even co-founding the Congressional Caucus on Vietnam,” said Andrew Stone of the DCCC. “Assemblymember Tran’s been office shopping for quite some time now. But given Congresswoman Sanchez’s strong record of serving her constituents, it’s clear she’ll be back next Congress.”
Tran has long been a groundbreaker in Vietnamese American politics, and has openly dreamed of serving in Congress since he was an aide to Sanchez’s predecessor, Republican Bob Dornan. He was a Garden Grove councilman and was the first Vietnamese American elected to the state legislature, where he is now termed out.
While McCarthy spoke of Tran as rising above partisan politics, several of the candidate’s key positions have a distinctly GOP ring – including his opposition to the bank bailouts.
“It’s a blank check the government has written on the backs of taxpayers,” he said. He similarly opposes the current approach to rescuing GM and Chrysler.
“The level of government intervention is unprecedented to the point where the administration can force executives to resign,” he said. “That is not the role of government.”
He also took a shot at Sanchez.
“The district needs a real representative and not a rubber stamp for (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi,” he said. “I know the area, I know the people and I believe I will do a better job representing the district.”
Here’s the press release Tran sent out. The release calls says Tran is “exploring” a run, but Tran said that language is a technicality since he hasn’t formally filed as a candidate yet.
Go ahead with your plan, V Tran! You will have no chance to win next year as a Republican candidate!!!
2009 is much different than 2004 when Bush won 2nd term. Look how low the GOP ship is now and even GOP veteran like Sen. Specter just jumped ship.
As a Vietnamese American I’ll not vote for you.
Cal, maybe you should learn more about Van before you make up your mind. Almost all of the representatives from this district historically were Republican…..there is no reason to believe this area won’t vote Republican again.
I have not seen much improvement in Westminster since Sanchez got into office. She is not the moderate that she campaigned to be.
Living in Southern California more than 30 years, I know Tran and Sanchez and what they did.
I voted for Reagan in the 1980s but changed party several years ago. It will be very tough time for Vietnamese GOP candidates in the near future since they only get votes from some old Vietnamese Americans. Most of the educated and young Asians don’t vote for the Republican party anymore.
The young ones don’t vote Republican because they are brainwashed in school to believe the government (aka other people) will provide for them. It is a shame that the hard working Asian people are being brain washed.
This is how it works now. Someone knocks at your door and says I need money to pay my mortgage. You say I have to pay my own mortgage and I worked my butt off every day to do it. They go home and Obama steals your money to hand over to the unproductive person. Real fair.
Republicans lost because they became little d Democrats. The Democrats becaome socialists. Until the Libertarian party becomes a factor there aren’t many choices but to vote for the lesser of the two evils which is the Republican party. In the mean time we have to push the Republicans toward more of a libertarian position while the Dems take the socialist route.
It is a shame to the Republican party that the hard working Asian people like the majority of Americans don’t believe in the GOP “trickle down” theory anymore like in the Reagan time of 1980s!
thank god somebody did…. time to give this kool-aid slurping fat head a run for her money
…fat talking head…
LOL
It should read: “Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Garden Grove” NOT: “Rep. Loretta Sanchez, R-Garden Grove”
Van Tran will do well in this district, which is socially consevative in its political leanings. Loretta Sanchez has been fooling her own voters. She is one the most liberal members around. I hope Tran will expose her for what she really is: A big spending liberal who believes in oversize government and carries water for everything that Orange County is not.
The big problem is which one is the lesser of the tow EVILS, They both are horible. Van Tran screwed Garden Grove when he was a City Council man. I purposely voted for him when he ran for a higher office just to get him out of Garden Grove.
GG is one of the best city in town, you liar, unemployment.
Obama turn this country become a welfare state, and unemployment country, so you can live in and receive welfare.
Unemployed,
You need to get a job instead of screwing yourself by being unemployed.
+1
Go Van Tran- Steal this election just like she did.
Use any means possible.
Get that piece of crap out of office…
Yeah, go and learn the trick from the other Vietnamese GOP candidate did last year!!!
Janet is the only election stealer I know from GG
Not Janet Nguyen.
It’s another Vietnamese guy also name Nguyen? as GOP candidate who faked a letter to scare Latinos not to vote for Sanchez.
Cal I am really starting to question your heritage completely. you sound like a big phony, fake internet persona.
It’s real me!!
I came to California in the middle of 1970s. Having an advanced degree in Engineering and working in aerospace industry for 30 years. I’m an American taxpayer and have all right here like anybody.
typical…you don’t agree w/ me so you MUST BE A SUBERSIVE! Heil GOP!!!
Van Tran… really another crook. Need some new faces for Garden Grove.
As has been reported, Sanchez accepted annual $1,000 contributions in 2009, 2007 annd 2008 from one Jon Walker, a director with the lobbying firm PMA Group, which is now the target of a federal corruption investigation for funneling fraudulent contributions to lawmakers such as Sanchez. Walker is listed on Loretta’s reports as a partner in EVAS Worldwide, when in fact he is not. EVAS was a client of PMA Group.
Funny that the DPOC has been mute on the topic, issuing no righteously indignant calls for Loretta to return the tainted contributions. Loretta takes money from sleazy lobbying firm under federal investigation and the DPOC does a Sgt. Schultz impression.
A check of Federal Election Commission records covering Jan. 1, 2007 through Dec. 31, 2008 and Jan. 1 through March 31, 2009 shows that Loretta Sanchez is still holding on to the tainted money — unlike a number of her Democratic House colleagues.
I’ll vote for Van Tran before LS. No one should ever give their vote to that Loretta Sanchez racist. She fights for amnetsy people! Go Van Tran!
how is fightiing FOR amnesty racist…was PRESIDENT REAGEN a RACIST? (HOW ABOUT BUSH?)
vietnamese are shifty, not as bad as the persians though…
You go, Van!
I just may have to move so I can vote for you!
Anyone who can help unseat the “Sanchez” harpies deserves all the help he can get.
Without Loretta, little sister “Sanchez” doesn’t stand a chance.
Perhaps you can change your name to Van Tran-Gomez to get more votes.
It worked for the “Sanchez” harpies.
Hey! Go Van,
You are so right. Get that illegall pandering woman that changed her surname to Sanchez to elected gone!!! She’s done nothing but feather her nest. Is her sister still under investigation????
Where do you get the impression Van Tran “screwed Garden” or is a “crook.” He gets huge support every election from Garden Grove and has helped reduce waste, fraud and overspending in Sacramento. He also helped get state bueroctats off the back of local ethnic business owners for mooncakes, gave workers and employers flexibility in the hours they work and expanded economic enterprise zones. He couldn’t be more popular in GG. He got the most votes ever in the GG City Council race. A record that still stands.
He gets support from the vietnamese community. The only reason he keeps getting elected. The same as Sanchez. People vote for their race.
As a Latino I am sorry to say that both Sanchez sisters have been a complete disaster. They don’t have a clue. Have you listen to any of this sisters on TV news programs. Wow, they are a disgrace to the Latino community. There many Latino/as that are honest, ethical, and more importantly, have a clue of what they are talking about. We just got the worst two possible Latinos in congress. Lets just admit that and move on!
Viva Mexico, and good bless America!
Sanchez stole her way into her seat in the first place; time to get rid of her since she should have been gone long before now. She is nothing but an ultraliberal, money-grubbing illegal apologist, who dropped her (then) husband’s last name so she could get the latino vote as “Sanchez”. Go Tran!!
hey cal, are you Vietnamese or American? You can’t be both pick one and move on. If you don’t want to be American go back to Vietnam.
I’m Vietnamese American!
I’d hate to live in this district. How could anyone vote for and idiot like Sanchez?
I totally agree. The key to the democrats success - at both the Federal and State level, will be to have more people relying on getting something from the government than there are people actually paying more in taxes than they are getting back.
Remember, majority vote wins. If 100,000,000 people vote and 50,000,001 of them are slackers, guess who will be get their taxes increased because they worked harder, worked 7 days a week, 18 hrs a day to keep their business going, took chances and invested wisely…..
During this entire recession, nothing is much mentioned of Federal and State lay-offs in order to deal with the deficits.
Van Tran has always supported Victims of Crime and has come out strongly against perpetrators of crime!
I stand firmly in Van Trans corner.
I might move to the 47th district just so I can vote against the racist, bigot Sanchez. She and her sister are they’re trying to create a Kennedy-like and Bush-like dynasty in Socal.
garden grove sucks, stanton sucks, westminister sucks…
only a matter of time b4 VAN TRAN gets indited on something…
Van Tran has a good shot at the seat.
A) Loads of shanagans and dirt on Sanchez once they start looking.
B) Within 18 months, Americans will wake up and be horrified at all of the hand outs and the resulting tax bills. Already key democrats are pushing back and distancing themselves from voting for the financial mess barreling down at us.
At some point people will have to be responsible for themselves. Not expect a handout from those who used their brains before signing up for something they had no business buying or investing in.
Don’t Vote for him, he’s a crook. Not saying I like LS either.
Anybody except Sanchez.. Is Alfred E. Neuman running ??
Is this going to be an election by those who care about all the people or just those who see it as a vietnamese candidate against a latino candidate? This minority endorceing has to stop!!!!Pick the one who is for all concerned!!!
I’m Vietnamese American but no way I’ll vote for anyone except Ms. Sanchez. Ms. Sanchez is doing a great job, no need to change.
Van Tran is a good guy! He is a Republican, but so what, he is still a good guy. He has a lot of common sense. I’d vote for him. My thing for this election is to not vote for any incumbents, Democrat or Republican, and vote Independent whenever possible. People need to rise over the party politics which is destroying this country and just try to vote on the real issues. I need to see a debate between Van Tran and Loreta Sanchez.
To Daryl, I agree with you wholeheartedly! We need more and better candidates to choose from.
Yes SI!! Politics and the media has separated everyone more then anyone realizes. Politics has segragated us all into groups insted of uniteing us. Everyday the media sees to it that they keep us fighting amongst ourselves. What better way to keep everyone under control, just keep us separated!!!
May be an independent black/white man or woman will run for the seat.
Good Luck Mr. Tran. The problem is that you are not running against loretta “bixby ot brixby” sanchez. You are running against the hispanic community who voted for a “sanchez” canidate in name only.
and aagainst TAN…a man that tried to suppress immigrant votes i.e. legal citizens recently sworn in by the laws of the United states as fully fledged American citizens from excersising their patriotic duty to cast a vote…
What about the illegal aliens (hispanics) who voted for lorreta bixby sanchez? I guess in your liberal mind that is OK
Proof Sir! Or are you full of zealous hot air?(please provide a source…and how those votes MADE A DIFFERENCE?)
The reason we are only hearing about 2 candidates is because they are the ones the higher government officals want in for their own self benefit. I`m positive there may be someone else more suitable for this placement, but of course you won`t hear much from them because they are not the ones our own government want in. Just read, study and do your own homework on all candidates and you will find the one who is most capeable. They won`t win i`m sure but you will be showing that your tired of choseing the only ones they want you to see.
Van Tran? Sounds like a vietnamese trucking company.
Nah, more like a foreign cartoon character.
Van Tran, Superstar Ninja Robot!
This has turned into a great topic with alot of great posts! What do you think would happen if neither candidate was voted in , but one who has really been and is where we`re at dureing this time. One that knows and realizes and is interested in the peoples problems. One that actually walks and lives among us , other then just trying to climb that ladder and sees what they can get out of that deseption of power. I`D VOTE for any race of man or woman that had the interest of the common man and the future of the children in their heart. We can change this whole circle of deseption, greed and deciet by just looking at ALL CANDIDATES!!!!
Once again the District will have little “real” choice. Blue dog or repuglican, neither will be able to actually help the District.
Bob Dornan only won because the Vietnamese community thought he was their hero. Once they figured out he was a right-wingnut who didn’t even live in Orange County, they threw him out. A Republican doesn’t stand a chance.
One Sanchez down (no pun intended, though likely) and one to go. Get them both outta here - please. Icky.
Here is Quang Don Pham, independend candidate
http://www.pham4congress.com
When is the media, the government and even ourselves going to quit lableing people as, mexican americans, vietnamese americans, native americans, african americans and so on? This does nothing but keep us apart as concerned humans and pareants!!! Just by the media saying one is vietnamese and one latino automatically puts us at odds against each other, which then takes our concentration out of makeing the right choice.Republician, Democrat?? Either one is no more then the candidate the one with the most toys wants in. Some of the most unknown polititions would make the best candidate. All i see is newspapers selling more just by keeping everyone at odds by makeing this a racial race instead of a race of candidates who could help everyone concerned. HECK, I`M VOTEING FOR ME!!!
Heck, I ‘d vote for you Daryl!
I like what you wrote! The main problem with America is that people take sides very easily and arbitrarily. And they jump onto the bandwagon and go out to do the dirty deeds that their party wants them to without thinking for themselves first. They whore themselves to the cheapest and most fleeting of ideals. One cause for this is the mainstream media which is completely biased. The media choose their side first, then they present their side of the issue and only the ugliest view point of the opposing side. There is no truth nor common ground nor common sense anymore. That’s why it is very easy to get people inflammed and stupid.
On Van Tran, to be fair, he is young and educated. His mom is a dentist and his dad was an English professor who wrote one of the first Vietnamese-English dictionary for Vietnam. This guy is from a good and decent family. The main problem is that he is a Republican, from a party which is basically dead. It would be awesome if he could win though, or anybody else for that matter, because I am so tired of Loreta Sanchez too. I am sure there will be more candidates coming out of the woodwork soon.
Good day!
I for one would love to get rid of sanchez….power on van tran you be da man!
hey anyone but this vacca.
I will take my chances on anyone other than that narcissist Sanchez. The fact that she used her maiden name to run (her married name was Brixey) while living Palos Verdes, renting a house in GG to make it sound like she lived there, getting a divorce to make Sanchez her legal name again and never answering my letters after her second term but has my address because I get Christmas cards from her office every year. At least she made Dornan look good.
Phony all the way.
Dump the phony.
When sanchez ran with her married name brixey she did not do so well. when she reverted back to her maiden name the hispanic community went nuts and voted for her. If 90% of whites did not vote for her because she is hispanic that would be racist. If 90% of hispanics voted for her because she is hispanic is that racist too?
whats racist is your “ability”–to MAKE GENERALIZATIONS YOU ARE ILL INFORMED TO MAKE…HOW DARE YOU CLAIM TO KNOW THE HEARTS AND MINDS OF A WHOLE SECTION OF SOCIETY? YOU ARE RACIST BECAUSE YOU THINK OF PEOPLE IN TERMS OF GROUPS AND LABEL THEM AS SOMEHOW UNABLE TO BE EDUCATED ABOUT POLITICAL ISSUES, BEING WELL-INFORMED ABOUT POLICIES, AND LACKING THE ABILITY OF BEING POLITICALLY INCLINED SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE HISPANIC…NEWSFLASH!!! THEY ARE JUST AS NUANCED AND CRITICAL OF THEIR OFFICIALS AS YOU ARE MY FRIEND.
P.S. Think BEFORE you post…your education(or lack thereof) is showing.
Are you off your meds now?
I think Van is a pretty cool guy. He is a Republican and doesn’t afraid of anything
Van Tran is a very cool guy! He’s just followed the other GOP guys and voted NO in Sacramento. What else can he do?
Do people want to send him to D.C. to do the same No votes like other GOP guys (and the probably one-term Vietnamese Rep.Cao) ?
It’s a “Hell NO” for me.
That should be the campaign slogan. Van Tran hasn’t really done much for the Vietnamese community other than showing u at events to claim 30 secs of fame. Van Tran is cloudy by his ambition to be the 1st of everything, but of course we all know Joseph Cao beat him to that job. Sorry VT. I don’t think he really cares much about the welfare of your life because he puts his personal goals before yours. He has shown this through the years as council member and assemblyman. I mean, I hope the Vietnamese community don’t fall into the voting someone because he is your own race but vote because what he/she has done.
Wise decision. We had enough of Loretta causing embarrassment for our district!
Maybe Van Tran should do what LS did. change is name to something like Van Tran Trillo to attract the hispanic vote
She doesn’t even live in GG - Wow! What a piece of work. By the way- I live near GG but I would never shop in that area as it’s too dirty. They need to clean up that city big time.
More voters are likely to reject Loretta in coming election. She has been on that moldy seat too long.
Loretta has enjoyed her perks in the office. Namely, shopping and traveling under the name of official government work. No more free deals for Loretta after 2010!
Anything but that silly christmas card with chubby sanchez and her chubby cat.
I agreed with “Stop the Van”. Again, lesser of two evils, I would not vote for either one. If Van does not win, we have to deal with Sanchez and two - four years later, we will deal with Van’s sister (Janet Tran, I mean Nguyen). Van Tran thinks about himself and try to be the first Vietnamese in Congress. Too late on that accomplishment. Maybe you will be another statistic for not getting the win for Congress. Like the other blogger stated, just because you are Vietnamese, the community will be behind you. I don’t think Van Tran can look in the mirror to say that he is “Vietnamese” when all he see is a “glory hog”. The same goes for Sanchez, her sister and that Janet Nguyen.
I disagree. Assemblyman Van Tran worked very hard serving his district and he will get more than enough support in this fight against Loretta.
Yes, I do agree that Loretta has been a “good for nothing” representative for more than 15 years.. It’s her time to leave!
You go Van! I am disgusted with Sanchez’s constant divisive racial dogma, just like the liberal she is. She is a leech living off the public, and so is her fat-a$$ sister Linda. I hope Van cleans her clocks…..
Jose
Anyone would be better than Sanchez.
We all know Sanchez sisters are WEIRD!
Our traditional family value has been completely lost with these two women.
Take your traditional family value out of the closet! Does it look like the Palin’s family in Alaska??? LOL.
No Cal, it looks like a divorce and short concise datings between the official government meetings.
Van Tran is a bad choice. He did not do anything for the community except for his own good. He is not fight for you. Sanchez is much better choice to have. She represents your voice and do good for the community. Van Tran needs to do something else. He is too much wishy washy.
“Wishy washy”??? I would rather have that than a rubber stamp, big government, bribe/payback filled (oops, I mean large federal budget) socialist representing me. What has Sanchez done besides find ways to take money from my family to give to ACORN, illegal immigrants, and people who do not even pay taxes? She won’t even take the time to respond to repeated letters sent to her office most likely because I voice a different opinion than her. Yep, I’m being represented.
Tran can have the three votes from my family, and he won’t even need to bribe us.
you should put your tinfoil hat back on friend…the aliens are listening ALWAYS…
Loretta is extreamly concerned over this race and we are happy to have a REAL leader running against her.
Go Assemblyman Van Tran!
Mr. jimmy baldwin - Proof on sanchez and illegals voting for her:
David Simcox, “How many non-citizen voters?” in the Social Contract, summer 2008, Vol. XVIII, No. 4, said, “…non-citizen voters in 1996 provided the narrow winning margin in Democrat Loretta Sanchez’s upset of long-time incumbent Republican Bob Dornan in California’s 47th Congressional district in Orange County. They believe that the incident was not isolated and that it presaged a growing threat to good government in general.”
Simcox continued, “Indicators of significant registration of non-citizens continue to pop up, and the current vast voter registration campaigns of Hispanic and Asian interests since Congress’s 2006 rejection of mass amnesty may force local registrars to increase their rubber-stamping of applications, producing new legions of non-citizens to vote in 2008.”

Use Google and search “sanchez, dornan, illegal votes”
first, I will take a minute to educate the uneducated…allegations are NOT PROOF…second, GOOGLE the sources you cite for VALIDITY FIRST here are some tidbits:
The Southern Poverty Law Center has released reports connecting the Center of Immigration Studies to white supremacist John Tanton, who also founded various other nativist organizations, including the Federation for American Immigration Reform and NumbersUSA. These reports were comprised by research of personal letters and public statements from Tanton, demonstrating Tanton’s ties to white supremacy and the eugenics movement.[27][28][29][30]
The Southern Poverty Law Center’s report reads:
FAIR, CIS[ THIS IS THE CENTER FOR IMMIGRATION STUDIES the place where your dear beloved David Simcox PUBLISHED his "report" (he has only earned a masters degree level...notice the lack of NUMBERS in his "report")] and NumbersUSA are all part of a network of restrictionist organizations conceived and created by John Tanton, the “puppeteer” of the nativist movement and a man with deep racist roots…CIS was conceived by Tanton and began life as a program of FAIR. CIS presents itself as a scholarly think tank that produces serious immigration studies meant to serve “the broad national interest.” But the reality is that CIS has never found any aspect of immigration that it liked, and it has frequently manipulated data to achieve the results it seeks.[31]

IN YA FACE!!!!
To jimmy baldwin: You must be one angry guy.
Democrat Loretta Sanchez will get my vote.
I follow OC politics regularly and I’m not sure what Mr. Van Tran has done for his district.
Tony
So, Mr. Philip, I have a question for you. Are you a taker or payer when it comes to taxes?
You must be a tax taker to like Sanchez. She has voted to spend absurd amounts of money that the kids of my kids will be paying. There are 49% of the people in this country who do not pay federal income taxes. Well, the ones who do are sick of paying for socialism. Getting rid of Sanchez is one step closer to getting rid of the socialism movement going on in this country right now.
Answer me
Just remember Sanchez switched her name back to her maiden name in order to gain votes. She is a joke.
You Vietnamese Catholics need to remember she is ardently pro death. Ask your priests.
Van Tran will win with in the next election. Sanchez never and won’t care about other races, other than her own race.
