Should Obama have lifted stem cell research ban?

Obama’s move today reverses President George W. Bush’s ban on using any new stem cell lines for such research.
This has been one of the most emotional hot button issues on Capitol Hill in recent years. Obama told lawmakers they will also have to play on this issue, particularly when it comes to appropriating federal money for this effort.

Since it is now Government funded to kill embryos, maybe we should re-evaluate our stance on the death penalty.
Yes
This is only a ‘hot button issues” for people to ignorant to understand the unbelievable potential of stem cell research. Stem cells could potentially be the greatest breakthrough in the history of medical science. We are talking about the destruction of CELLS, not people, not babies but CELLS.
Smashing a fly should present you with a greater moral dilemma than destroying 6 day old blastocysts.
Someone will inevitably argue here that it is the POTENTIAL of these cells that makes it a moral issue. They are wrong. Blastocysts often combine to form one human called a chimera, or split into two or three different babies. Theologians are undoubtedly scratching their heads wondering what happens to the two supposed ’souls’ during this process.
This issue is intellectually indefensible on the part of the anti-stem cell crowd. It is just another example of religious dogmatism coupled with willful ignorance.
More research please!

Bring it on; research away. I pray they quickly find cures for terrible diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, etc., so that I don’t have to watch another family member suffer.

Stem cell research is very good. Why aren’t we “regressing” skin cells to embryonic cells instead of having to kill embryos? BTW I am not pro-life I think everything deserves to die.

It wasl ALWAYS the policy to discard (kill) unwanted, unneeded embryos. This change in policy makes it possible for tremendous benefit to be gained from unfortunate waste.
The fate of these superfluous embryos was always sealed. Now there is a chance for a “redemption” of sorts. Actual life should always trumph potential life.

Obama is doing what he said he would do during the campaign. Obama is over turning all the laws that GW Bush put forward to rule the country for the right wing religious nuts.
It is about time that we allow science to emerge from the DARK AGES! I am only disappointed that this didn’t happen on January 20th!
This isn’t an abortion issue, because there aren’t any pregnancies being terminated (pregnancy is defined as an egg which has implnted in the womb). This is, however, a fiscal issue. With the budget being upside down in serious deficit, the government should not be committing dollas to elective programs. Funding of embryonic stem cell research is an elective program, and the government simply can’t afford it right now.
In the interest of fiscal restrains, Obama should not be committing new funds to embryonic stem cell research.
Christie, agree! We do have eight years of heavy damage to recover from. Now if we can finally kill off the remnants of Intelligent Design, we might actually make some progress in rational, logically thought out policy.
Just another thing our new “president” is doing to change the US for the worse. I believe in certain types of research, I lost someone through a terminal illness which has no cure, but embryonic is not appropriate. Nor is many other things Obama is doing. He’s running our country into the ground already.

By the way, stem cells don’t ONLY come from embryos.
People are so worried about killing embryos for saving the life of millions of people. But it’s okay for pyschos like Nadya Suleman to harvest all her embryos so that taxpayers can take care of them!!!

I say Nay on FEDERAL OR STATE funding of stem cell research. IF it is as promising as proponents say it is, why isn’t the INDUSTRY jumping all over it with their own research dollars?
The taxpayers shouldn’t fund that which industry stands to profit from.
An alternative would be to loan industry the research money then have industry repay the loan when/if the research proves fruitful in terms of what proponents claim it will achieve.

If this were such a lucrative process, business would be all over it funding it with billions. The reason they aren’t is because embrionic stem cells have not produced results while adult stem cells have and are. Why should we pour money into something that has been proven ineffective, especially with the ethical questions it provokes?
