A new survey by The Field Poll finds that Orange County Assemblyman Chuck DeVore has a tough row to hoe in his run Barbara Boxer’s U.S. Senate seat.

Field Poll finds that in a hypothetical Republican primary featuring DeVore, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (who has been thought to be a good candidate for Senate, but has never said he is interested in the job) and former HP CEO Carly Fiorina (who is thought to be considering a run), DeVore comes in a distant third, with Arnold taking 31 percent of the vote, Fiorina taking 24 percent and the assemblyman taking 9.

Without the governor, Fiorina leads DeVore 31 percent to 19 percent, with 50 percent undecided.

The poll also concluded that only 18 percent of voters in California have an opinion of DeVore, compared with 93 percent for Schwarzenegger, 91 percent for Boxer and 41 percent for Fiorina.

In other words, DeVore has little name recognition among voters. That’s a big obstacle in a statewide race.
