Republicans could face censure if they approve tax increase

February 3rd, 2009, 10:32 am · Post a Comment · posted by BRIAN JOSEPH, Sacramento Correspondent

First conservative radio hosts John and Ken on KFI blasted Republicans for talking about tax increases. Now Orange County’s very own Jon Fleischman has proposed officially censuring any state GOP lawmaker who votes for a tax increase to fix the state’s $42 billion budget deficit.

Fleischman, known in political circles for running the conservative Flash Report blog (but perhaps better known by general Orange County residents as Sheriff Mike Carona’s one-time spokesman), has introduced a resolution to be considered at the upcoming California Republican Convention that would censure any state Republican for approving a tax increase.

The resolution would have to be approved by attendees at the Feb. 20 conference in Sacramento, but Fleischman writes on his blog today that “it is my full expectation that it will end up being withdrawn because I believe that our Republicans in the Capitol will hold the line against all of the liberals and special interest groups that want them to cave in, to punish taxpayers, and raise taxes by BILLIONS of dollars.”

The resolution, which would urge the party faithful not support any Republicans who vote for taxes and to actively try to remove them from office, is obviously intended to pressure Republicans not to approve any tax increase to balance the budget. For months now, it’s been an almost foregone conclusion that a tax increase is necessary to balance the budget and that some Republicans would have to vote for it.

The radio hosts John and Ken have had a number of state Republican lawmakers on their show recently and have blasted all who have said they might consider taxes — or even those who declined to say they wouldn’t consider them. Their Web site shows the heads of offending lawmakers on sticks and says, “Media reports say the Republicans are close to breaking their no new tax pledge. Call the Republican Assembly and Senate members and tell them to stand firm on no new taxes or else!”
