Possible Clinton replacement favors crackdown on illegal immigration

The political drama over Caroline Kennedy’s withdrawal from the running to become Hillary Rodham Clinton’s replacement as the junior senator from New York has now drawn immigration advocates into the fray.

I got a call a little while ago from Irvine immigration lawyer Angelo Paparelli who told me that upstate New York Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, who the New York papers are saying could be the frontrunner to replace Clinton, has signed on to a bill that would crack down on illegal immigration and likely opposes comprehensive immigration reform.

New York Gov. David Paterson is expected to name Clinton’s successor tomorrow.

Gillibrand is a cosponsor of the SAVE Act. This bill, sponsored by North Carolina Democrat Heath Shuler, would add 8,000 border patrol agents, require employer verification of worker status and complete the fence along the border. Immigration advocates vehemently oppose the bill.

On her Web site, Gillibrand talks about her views on immigration. Here is some of what she says:

” I believe the first step to fixing our immigration system is to stop the flow of illegal immigration. This can be accomplished by securing the Southern border, enforcing the employment laws on the books and ensuring that our farmers and businesses have the adequate number of legal workers after they have exhausted their search for American workers. I am firmly against providing amnesty to illegal immigrants.”

Most Democrats oppose the SAVE Act. While I could not reach anyone on Gillibrand staff tonight, it would seem based on her immigration statement on her Web site and her “B” rating by NumbersUSA, a nationwide group that advocates restrictions on immigration, that Gillibrand would oppose any immigration bill that gives benefits to illegal immigrants, including a path to citizenship.

So she likely would have been a no vote on the comprehensive immigration bill that Clinton and New York’s other senator, Chuck Schumer supported in 2007. That bill would have provided a path to legalization for undocumented immigrants and a new temporary worker program.

Paparelli said immigration advocates in New York “are hoping to derail” Patterson from appointing Gillibrand, a moderate Democrat who also has gotten a favorable rating from the National Rifle Association, something that has led Long Island Democrat Carolyn McCarthy to tell the New York Times tonight that she would primary Gillibrand in 2010 if Paterson chooses her. McCarthy has led the charge in Congress for increased gun control laws.

Paterson is risking fratricide in the NY Democratic party. Having the Hispanic Caucus riled up about a Senator from a major state is simply inviting Republican gains nationwide in 2010 and beyond. Not a good idea if you are a Democrat.

In any case, anyone who believes that the anti-immigrant SAVE Act has any chance whatsoever in a Democrat-controlled Congress under a Democratic administration is completely drunk.

Not those who come here illegally to work under the table, never pay taxes and suck our charities and social programs dry. We need MORE Dems like Gillibrand! Illegal immigration IS the number one issue in United States. It’s what’s affecting the economy, especially in California. It effects education, health care, social security, unemployment, and national security.

Of the estimated 14 million “illegals” in America, overwhelming majorities were admitted “LEGALLY”. They become “illegal” when they ignore the end date on their I94 entry form.

A fence will not stop the majority of illegals who enter this country. Anyone who thinks it will is delusional. The answer to the problem is E-Verify and punishing employers who offer jobs to undocumented people.

Illegals are here because they can get work. They are offered jobs. They are not here because there is a hole in some fence.

“Immigration advocates vehemently oppose the bill.” I think the media should stop using the term “immigration advocates”. I do not know whom it exactly refers to. Does it mean those who support regulated immigration, or those who support unlimited come-as-you-like (including illegal) immigration, or those focus on the rights of the immigrants who are already here, whether they have become citizens or not? All these groups of “advocates” are not alike. Not every one of these “advocates” “vehemently oppose the bill.”
It is like saying “free-market advocates vehemently oppose the bailout bill.” Well, how do you define “free-market advocates”? I think even those who support the bailout would describe themselves as free-market advocates. Everyone in the US support free markets. So “free-maket advocates” are defined as those who oppose the bailout? And “immigration advocates” are defined as those who oppose stronger immigration control? And thus those who support legal and controlled immigration would be “immigration dis-advocates”?

It seems “immigration advocates” is just an euphemism for “supporters for illegal immigration”, just as “undocumented immigrants” for “illegal aliens.” Well, call it what it really is. Hey Dena, do you mean restrictions on “illegal” immigration? i love the way people tiptoe around certain words in order to make themselves sound better as if their hoping the people they are addressing to are idiots and will forget the difference between illegal and legal immigrants and what’s right and wrong. It’s a catch phrase much like “revenue stream” and “state fees” or “state bonds” instead of the word “TAXES”.

Whatever happened to fiscal responsibility? That’s really the bottom line here. Politicians think there is an unlimited money tree in the general populous for them to supply their “revenue stream”. WAKE UP PEOPLE! There is a stream alright. Citizens streaming out of California cause the public schools suck and the “fees” are destroying everything from employment to affordable housing to good health care. I’m in favor of immigration reform. I’d like to reform it so that current laws have teeth to go after employees who hire illegals, ILLEGALLY and are breaking the law everyday to save a few bucks.

I grew up in OC……now I live in the Hudson Valley of NY….right in the heart of Kirsten’s World. Gillibrand is another DNC puppet and will follow orders…she will take one for the team. Coumo would have been a better pick….but he is just a little to independent and would need to be watched too closely, and him and Schumer don’t seem to see eye to eye all the time.

I can’t say the ILLEGAL ALIENS are completely to blame for the shape of our economy, but they are a BIG part of the problem. The ILLEGAL ALIENS send BILLIONS upon BILLIONS out of this Country every year, money we will NEVER see again. Does this help our economy?

An end MUST come to this illegal immigration. The perfect tool we have so far is E-Verify. It MUST be used by ALL businesses and Government Social Services. EVERY employee must be checked! If they are illegal, they are to be dismissed!

I believe it is time for all 50 States to pass a State law, like Arizona, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and a few others. It is time for these ILLEGAL ALIENS to go back to their home Country and get out of this Country. The problems they are causing will not go away until the ILLEGAL ALIENS are out of this Country. “Enforcing the employment laws on the books” would be a good place to start and start it here in good old Orange County. How about using the Border Patrol to around up all the dayworkers standing on the corner or blocking the sidewalk and sending them back. If fifty teenagers from the local high school stood on one street corner the sheriff’s department would bring out the riot gear but fifty day workers they can’t see.

I find it so amusing that we are so vehement in opposition to illegals. Probably lucky for most people in Orange County that the native people of this land didn’t have so much resentment towards the uninvited invaders…oh, wait, they did. Whites just slaughtered them and stuck them on reservations. Now they pay us back by getting rich on our addictions. *chuckle* And so it goes…

I’m opposed to unfettered illegal immigration. The reality is, we just cannot afford the strain on our infrastructure. We’ve overloaded the elevator and someone has to close the doors, or we all fall. But the hatred towards illegals, who are just seeking what our ancestors sought, like a better life and work, is sickening to me. Yes, they overcrowd the schools. Yes, they depend heavily on MediCal and other welfare programs, in a way that is not what they are designed for. The cure to that is for Mexico, and other countries, to build their own economy and structure, and create jobs there. They also need to drop the Catholic rhetoric, and use some birth control.

But, then, of course, you have the flip side of the problem. If Mexico became a real force in world business, and trade, then you’d have people screaming about companies taking away jobs from “good Americans” and giving them to “those Mexicans”, and the whining of the self important would go on. Until we take the insane emotions out of this, and simply look for logical solutions, you can bet nothing will ever get done.

We don’t want them here, but by heavens, we really don’t want brown people getting rich over there. This is the most schizo society in the world. No wonder the rest of the world thinks we’re nuts.

The Governor of New York is up for re-election soon and New Yorkers are pointing out that he stands to get a lot of $$$ for his re-election big by this appointment. As always, politicians are corrupted by $$$ and power.

The difference between the appointment of Caroline Kennedy and Gillebrand is the same as the difference between one world and another. We just had an election to have a new President who will lead us in a new direction. Gillebrand is a representative of the failed Republican reactinary and racist politics of the past.

In former President Bush recent remarks before leaving office, he pointed out that Republicans had to change from within and remove their racist approaches and members who led the Party to electoral defeat. It appears the Governor of New York was not listening to Bush’s advice.

I wonder if Gillebrand’s appointment has to be confirmed by the New York Senate. If so, perhaps there is a way to get rid of her before she takes office.

Just a last comment to compliment my sarcasm in my last post. I would be the first guy to say that many illegal aliens are hardworking people. Sure. The trouble I have had with the main stream reporting of illegal immigration is that reading the New York, or Los Angeles Times in the last 15 years you would think that illegal alien foreign nationals are the most important people in the world.

Never a good word for hardworking Americans.(some do work hard) Even liberals like Barbara Ehrenriech for instance, have written books documenting the plight of millions of hardworking American taxpaying citizens. YET, when the time comes to talk about illegal aliens, the sympathy for Americans from liberals like Ehrenreich and others goes right out the window. That is why they cannot be taken seriously. Already you had people like Robert Reich, panicked that some of the government money to help people might go to white construction workers. He was afraid that illegal alien foreign nationals, who have no history here, have never paid the kind of taxes Americans have, and so on–wouldn’t get their share. This is why I cannot take these liberals serioulsy on anything involving the best interests of American taxpayers.

Before any of you start singing the praises of the SAVE Act, you should read our well-researched and vetted report on what this bill really does. It may or may not give amnesty to certain illegal aliens, but it will definitely give AMNESTY to religious organizations for aiding and abetting. As written and widely supported in the 110th Congress, the SAVE Act is un-Constitutional.

We’ve had two amnesties and two supposed matching tough legislative instruments passed into law. 1986 amnesty came with the SAVE Program attached. 1996 amnesty came with 287(g) attached. After each amnesty the flood of illegal aliens increased. Pandering lawmakers failed to appropriate funds for the SAVE Program or 287(g) except in paltry amounts. In 2006, on the tenth and twentieth respective anniversaries of amnesty, we got the Secure Fence Act of 2006. They tried amnesty again in 2007 which failed, and then proceeded to promote the SAVE Act leading into the 2008 elections. It is my belief they knew full well this legislation wasn’t going very far, but just far enough to take illegal immigration off the front burner for the ‘08 campaign season. They succeeded. Conservatives stayed home with nobody to vote for, and the powers that be in both the RNC and DNC got everyone off their backs. They could each say they either supported or opposed the SAVE Act to their constituents back home with impunity. The only real amnesty granted in the authoring of the SAVE Act was for the politicians. Had it passed, none of the good provisions would ever be funded properly, just like the SAVE Program, 287(g), and the Secure Fence Act. Even Secure Fence Act author, NY Congressman Peter King eventually voted to pull the funding for the fence he once championed via the December 2007 Omnibus Appropriations Bill. He shrugged it off as the lesser of two evils. It was still evil. Attrition through enforcement of our existing laws works. Supporting the SAVE Act to get an empty promise that will never be funded is not a fair trade-off for the un-Constitutional parts that would empower the very organizations that aid and abet the largest invasion in world history. Enforce the laws we already have before we throw them out in exchange for more empty promises from politicians.

I appreciate and welcome our governor’s choice of Gillibrand. It is nice to see a politician that listens to the will of the people. Respecting of the contribution of our past immigrants, I appreciate what they have done to build and shape our nation in the early stages. Since then, we have established a law and a system to become an American citizen. Becoming a citizen should not automatically be granted just because you successfully got here. I think some individuals that combine our past immigrants, those following the law with individuals that are here by illegal means is actually disrespectful. If Gillibrand continues to serve the people of New York as she has in the past, I will gladly giver her my support and will contribute to ensure she wins the special election for another full term.

I live in California and my neighborhood has become lousy with illegal aliens. Please bear with me, I always understood that writing in all caps is like screaming at others. I know for a fact, that these women go to the welfare office and claim their kids but do not claim the father, who is living in the home and being supported by your tax dollars. these women are not getting pregnant on their own. Any Americans that have lost their jobs, go down and apply for all the benefits that are being given to those who do not deserve them. If you are denied, contact the newspapers, contact the minutemen organizations, START MAKING SOME NOISE, YOU DON’T OWE THESE PEOPLE ANYTHING, YOU OWE YOUR OWN FAMILIES, AMERICAN FAMILIES. Make your voices heard as to who should be getting all the jobs that Obama says are coming. I do not like violence and don’t suggest anyone use it. If you see garages or additions being added onto houses, contact your city code enforcement, be sure they have permits and these dewelling are safe. Many illegal garage conversions are pooping up so more aliens are squeezed in and fires are common, often children die because of these conditions. Look around at the other cars on the road. If you see license plates that are expired, especially in California you can bet they don’t carry insurance or registration either.
Turn the car in as a smogger to 1 800 cutsmog, the last owner will be contacted the car will need to be smogged and registered and insured. I had a problem with an illegal and no insurance and I will tell you call the police right away don’t hesitate. With no insurance and usually no license, they should be arrested and their car towed. The cops are getting sick of the invasion too. Try getting behind them in the grocery store and watch your tax dollars pay for food and how much CASH they have to spend on smokes and beer.

illegals are not going anywhere as long as we keep giving them welfare, food stamps, wic, medicaid and education to their illegal children and free lunch, free immunizations. what we need to do if put an end to anchoring. end automatic citizenship! that s the reason pregnant women cross the desert to drop a kid here because they know automatic food stamps, government housing, and it starts all over again. who is giving 20 million illegal aliens a job. dont hire these people and maybe they will self deport

We need to take back OUR country.

l) Stop ALL benefits to illegal aliens.
2) Finish the fence.
3) Enforce existing immigration laws.
4) Deport criminal illegal aliens.
