Carona trial testimony: Sheriff told of alleged Jaramillo interference into Greg Haidl case

December 5th, 2008, 11:42 am · 30 Comments · posted by Rachanee Srisavasdi

A retired Newport Beach police chief testified today that he informed Mike Carona about the alleged interference of Assistant Sheriff George Jaramillo into the Greg Haidl gang rape investigation, and that he didn’t think Carona passed on the information to internal affairs.

Bob McDonell said he wanted the former sheriff to be aware of the purported “role conflict” of Jaramillo regarding police officer’s attempt to interview Greg Haidl.

The alleged interference happened the night of July 8, 2002. Jaramillo advised Assistant Sheriff Don Haidl - the father of Greg — not to have his son interviewed by investigators who came to Greg Haidl’s Rancho Cucamonga house, Newport Beach Lt. William Hartford testified earlier today.

Both Jaramillo and Don Haidl were at the home that night, Hartford said. Jaramillo said he was there as Carona’s chief of staff and as a lawyer, he added. Jaramillo said that as a lawyer, he advised Don Haidl not to let investigators talk to his son.

Hartford testified that Jaramillo’s actions were in “complete conflict with his position as a police officer.”

Regarding McDonell’s letter to Carona, McDonell testified that Carona wrote him back, saying he discussed the incident with Don Haidl and Jaramillo and that their accounts differed significantly.

McDonell said he took Carona’s letter to mean that Carona decided not to pass the information to internal affairs. He said if he had received a similar allegation about another police officer, he would have referred the case for internal investigation.

  • Hondo says:

Carona kissed off this complaint & failed to have his department investigate a complaint of misconduct in direct violation of state law. If I recall correctly, Carona was quoted as saying “Eff McDonell.” I can tell you from experience that if a sergeant or a lieutenant failed to follow department policy and did not forward a formal complaint of misconduct in writing to IA, they would be severely disciplined.

  • Eliz says:

This is such a slimy corrupt mess. I think we have many more surprises ahead. I hope Carona heard about OJ’s prison term today as he is soon going to hear about his. The whole group deserve many years away from society.

  • crs says:

i am still on the hunt for greg haidl…when I find him he is going to get a pool stick up his arse.

  • Eliz says:

You can find Greg listed under Megan’s law in San Clemente.

  • Shenanigans says:

Why not have Captain Davis Nighswonger investigate the complaint while he’s looking for those personnel files he lost? Maybe it’s because he won’t investigate corruption that occurs in the departmnet just allegations against those trying to expose that corruption. Nighswonger is another in a long list of Corona sycophants who blindly contributed to the corruption of the Sheriff’s Department still surviving in Hutchin’s adminsitration. I’m sure they were just following orders, just like Himmler and Goebbels….

  • Meeche says:

CRS should be arrested for threatening Greg Haidl.

  • WTF says:

Once again “Shenanigans”, Nighswonger isn’t at fault here. He wasn’t the Cap’t in charge of investigating these issues back in 2002 when this all happened. If I’m not mistaken, Skippy’s boy, Tom Twellman, was the Cap’t. back then. Perhaps you might ask him. And while you’re at it, you might also ask Twellman where the missing files for Skippy, jaramillo n haidl are!!!

  • hadenoughalso says:

WTF is correct and Galisky was the Lieutenant.

  • Old dude says:

Where are all the OC supporters of “Americas (little) Sheriff” now?

  • onmyowntwofeet says:

In the article it says: “Hartford testified that Jaramillo’s actions were in “complete conflict with his position as a police officer.”

I had to laugh at this statement because almost ALL of Jaramillo’s actions were in complete conflict with his position as a police officer because he never was a real cop. He was always doing other “business” while on-duty at GG and he obviously wasn’t doing his job at OCSD. The same could be said of him as a so-called attorney. He may have passed the Bar, but he certainly was no practicing attorney. He probably never stepped foot in a courtroom until he became a turncoat and started squeeling to save his own butt. His whole being is a sham…always was and always will be.

  • Barney says:

I was amazed that Haidl was not removed from the sheriff’s department while his son was under investigation. I wonder how much information came from the sheriff’s office to be used by “little Haidl’s” defense team and its investigagtors to harass, embarass, intimidate and discredit the victim.

  • WTF says:

    “Barney”,
You shouldn’t be amazed that daddy haidl wasn’t removed because Skippy was doing his best to placate his partner in crime. There is no way that any information to help the kid’s legal defense was funneled thru the sheriff’s department since the kid’s case was being investigated by Newport Bch PD.

And since that scumbag jaramillo pissed those guys off by interfering with their investigation, I can assure you that Newport Bch PD wasn’t sharing any of the details of their investigation with anyone at the sheriff’s department…..

  • More Shenanigans says:

Shenanigans is right on. The people in charge of internal affairs at the Sheriffs Department today are the same ones promoted and placed in these positions by Carona and his henchmen.

  • Shenanigans says:

Hey WTF, you best check your facts son. This nightmare didn’t unfold overhight. Nighswonger was both Galisky’s and Twellman’s little hand picked boy. He was the sergeant in IA, the lieutenant in IA and now the Captain in IA. They brought him up on their proverbial knees making sure he danced to the party line. Let’s not be too quick to give lil boy Davis a pass. Sure, the others were just as bad but they’re no longer in the department personally benefitting from turning a blind eye to the corruption in the department . Davis Nighswonger and Tim Board and Roland Chacon all willingly stuck their heads in the sand and their butts in the air while blindly supporting Carona despite the evidence. The Nurnburg trials held the Nazi’s accountable. There should be something similar to hold weasels like this acccuntable. Perhaps the voters will hold Sandra Hutchins accountable for keeping that schmutz and those like him in place in her adminsitration.

  • WTF?WTF?? says:

Go look at this toad and tell me if he is capable of anything more than dribbling appleasauce onto hi bib. http://www.ocsd.org/divisions/professional_standards/

This is what’s running the SO’s internal affairs division? He looks like he’s lucky if he gets his shoes tied in the morning. Give me a break!

  • x18 says:

Don’t be too hard on Nighswonger. He is nothing more than a useful idiot, a term invented in Soviet Russia to describe people who blindly supported the likes of Lenin and Stalin while they committed atrocity after atrocity.

He certainly wasn’t alone, you could add many others to the list including Tim Simon. Rocky Hewitt, Doug Storm, Pete Gannon. Joanne Galisky, Marty Kasules, Kim Markuson, Steve Bishop, Charlie Walters, Dan Martini, Dennis Damaio, the Board of supervisors, past and present. Dale Dykema and his pals at the Lincoln Club and the list goes on and on. Nighswonger is a bit player in this drama.

  • More Shenanigans says:

Amen Shenanigans. But you left out a few others like Capt Murray who tried to solicit money for Carona’s campaigns. The District Attorney refused to prosecute her and punted to the California Attorney General who allowed her to make a plea bargain which didnt even amount to a slap in the wrist. Then of course there is top administrator Jack Anderson who is still protecting Mikey’s kin!

As far as the current Internal affairs division at the Sheriffs department Id say its corrupt from th Captain to the Sergeant and has been during the past 10 years. Wasnt one of them just forced into retirement for lying to the grand jury?

As we saw by the jail report the problem doesnt lay in the jails it lands directly on the backs like those you mention who were promoted and handled by Carona, Galisky and Anderson.

  • WTF says:

Hey Shenanigans…I know my facts and I’m not your son! You obviously have a bone to pick with Nighswonger, and I’m not saying that he’s totally clean in his past actions under Galisky, what I am saying is that Twellman and Galisky were the shot callers and dictated what was going on, not Nighswonger.

You’re absolutely right, this f@#kin’ mess didn’t happen overnight. It unfolded over the course of 9 years of “shenanigans” by Skippy and his band of thieves and morons.

  • Shenanigans says:

WTF - It wasn’t too long ago that everyone was giving Carona a pass just like you’re giving Nighswonger. They blamed it all on Haidl and Jaramillo just like you’re blaming Galisky and Twellman for Nighswonger’s actions. The reality is that Nighswonger didn’t have to do the things he did, he chose to. He’s still there promoting up the ranks and deserves to be exposed. People like Carona don’t operate in a vacuum. Those who willingly compromise themsleves in the face of overwhelming evidence deserve to be outed. It’s time to stop passing the buck.

  • Dorothy says:

You can’t remove a “pretend” sheriff’s assistant from and pretend sheriff’s department !!!

  • WTF says:

Not passing the buck Shenanigans, just highlighting the fact that Galisky & Twellman are the more prominent corrupt puppets of Skippy that were calling the shots back in 2002. Not giving Nighswonger a pass at all.

  • Know Em All says:

    WTF,
I’m with you almost every day, but I feel your cutting Nighswonger a huss here and he doesn’t deserve it or the rank.
As you know Nighswonger barely passed anything including motor training, etc. He was never an investigator, but did arrest a gang deputy for DUI. So starts the internal affairs affection that has paid him damn well….
Dave is a nice geek that listens to his superviosors, and that’s it!

  • WTF says:

Sorry for the misunderstanding “Know em All”, but I’m not giving Nighswonger a pass. I just have a bigger bone to pick with Galisky & Twellman. They were the ones doin’ all the behind the scenes manipulating on behalf of the corrupt and immoral sheriff and his buddies. Nighswonger was just a pawn in the game and I realize that doesn’t give him a free pass for sure……

  • More Shenanigans says:

Wtf?WtF? You are pure genius. Look at who the Sergeant is in internal affairs? Someone who did about 3 months on patrol, no investigator experience and god help us he is an english major who knows how to write great bull sh&%t for his Captain. Mindless idiots in there.

  • neteligent says:

How much did Car Towing companies paying to Mike Carona and Sheriffs in Orange County? Check the other contribution book.

  • Hondo says:

Was Willie Moreno with Jarmillo when the incident between baby haidle, Newport PD & Jarmillo tok place.

  • MLEW says:

Capt. Nighswonger is a decent person with more intelligence and education than most on this board. He doesn’t deserve the criticism that is being hurled his way. I know the person, not the Captain. If you people only had a clue…….or any compassion, you would ease up on him……

  • Al Bondigas says:

If and when Corona is convicted, how long will it be before he is sentenced? If he is sentenced before the 20th of January, Bush will pardon him!!! Can’t have a loyal Republican go to jail…

  • Shenanigans says:

MLEW - If I had a nickel for everytime somebody made that same comment about Little Davis’s boss Mike Carona I’d be a very rich man. I know Nighswonger too and he’s being exposed for what he is, a spineless sychophant who toed the party line. Now that he’s having his day in the sun it’s poor little Davis. It couldn’t happen to a nicer coward as far as I’m concerned. How come you never came forward to speak out about what Nighswonger and his ilk did to Bill Hunt and Jeff Bardzik and Frank Nin and Don Barnes? If that was OK with you it tells me what your opinion is worth too.

  • DN says:

    More Shenanigans,

It’s actually Communication with an emphasis in Journalism.
If you need me to proof read a memo, send it over.
