Sanchez says Obama’s homeland pick has tough border record

December 1st, 2008, 3:44 pm · 24 Comments · posted by Dena Bunis, Washington Bureau Chief

Not surprisingly, Rep. Loretta Sanchez has a different view of President-elect Barack Obama’s national security team than her GOP colleagues, starting with her buddy Sen. Hillary Clinton as secretary of state and including virtually all the others he announced today.

And Sanchez, the delegation’s only Democrat, says Republican Reps. Dana Rohrabacher and Ed Royce are wrong if they think Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano will be soft on illegal immigration if, as expected, she’s confirmed as homeland security secretary.

“She is a border governor and she quite frankly has had the nastiest border fight going on,’’ said Sanchez, D-Garden Grove. “She’s been pretty tough-minded on that issue.  She’s not going to be a pushover for any of these issues. I’m surprised some of the Latino community hasn’t come out and attacked her as yet.’’

Sanchez is vice chair of the House homeland security committee and chairs the subcommittee on the border. So she’ll be working closely with Napolitano. She said the Arizona governor’s office has already been in touch with Sanchez’s chief of staff about the two getting together.

Sanchez said she also believes she’ll be interacting with Clinton as secretary of state, particularly with Sanchez’s work when it comes to women and violence. Sanchez is heading up a task force as part of the congressional women’s caucus on the issue of violence against women internationally, especially when it comes to human trafficking.

“She knows the issues and is set to go,’’ Sanchez said of Clinton, who she strongly supported for president during the primary season.

A member of the Armed Services Committee, Sanchez especially liked Obama’s decision to keep Bob Gates on as Defense Secretary.

“Gates not only listens to what we have to say but he acts on much of it,’’ Sanchez said. “I think the Democrats really like Gates.’’

And, she said, retired Gen. Jim Joneswas commandant of the Marine Corps when El Toro was being shut down and so he is familiar with southern California and our congressional delegation.

“He’s a very smart guy,’’ Sanchez said of Jones.

  1. Stan Switek Says:

Janet Napolitano has vetoed ever piece of border security legislation that has come across her desk except for sanctions against employers. Tough on immigration? Not a chance.

  2. teejay223 Says:

The GOP view is absolutely correct, Sanchez is wrong. The pro-illegal crowd, as well as the Latino community is applauding the Gov. Nappy decision. We’re ecstatic to get rid of her as Gov. of our state, but extremely concerned that she will be in charge of the security of our country. She worked very closely with Mexico trying to bring in more and more cheap labor only from Mexico. This woman is a traitor to our country.

  3. Leh Says:

The citizens re-elected Sheriff Joe Arpio for a reason, yet Napolitano is “picked” for Sec. of Homeland Security. It goes to show ya how much Washington is listening.

  4. LadyM Says:

Putting Napolitano in charge of DHS is like putting Colonel Sanders in charge of guarding the chicken house. What a joke!

  5. David Denton Says:

Sanchez supports her fellow Democrat Napolitano because, as in Arizona, she knows the governor will not help curb illegal immigration. Obama would have been better off assigning “Goofy” or “Donald Duck”
as the head of Homeland Security.

  6. Cliff Says:

She is a strong supporter of open borders!

  7. OC reader Says:

…wow, 6-to-1, doesn’t look like Sanchez is going to win this one!!!

  8. Patriot Says:

Dear sanchez or bixby or what ever your name happens to be,

    Shut up and go away!

  9. caseclosed Says:

Sanchez needs to pull her head out of the sand. Last month everyone was chanting Obama Obama but after he legalizes all the illegals they will be chanting Obummer Obummer.

  10. Angler Says:

With Sanchez as vice-chair of the House Homeland Security Committee abd chairs a subcommittee on the border, might explain why most of our elected government representatives are nothing but open borders whores. The Arizona governor is a warrior compared to Sanchez.

  11. reason Says:

California can now officially be called “TJ Norte”.

  12. gareeyph Says:

just more ‘BS’ cummin outta her open borders mouth.

  13. SicknTired Says:

Sanchez is as good of a politician as her brother was a boat captain.

  14. Gregg Says:

Rep. Sanchez is vice chair of border security?

    Unbelievable!

How did we ever get to this point?

  15. bacon&eggs Says:

“Sanchez is vice chair of the House homeland security committee and chairs the subcommittee on the border.”—-I didn’t know she was all that. She needs to get out of her community and she if she can really get elected in the US. Open boarders- WOW in this time. She has lost it.

  16. G. H. Weiss Says:

Orange County appears to show its colors. Ghettos form for reasons - sometimes it’s because the population at large designs the ghetto to isolate the ghettoized, sometimes the ghetto people choose to be together because it’s more comfortable being with people like yourself and avoiding those who are different. Often it’s both factors working.
I wonder if all the folks who weighed in here are white OC folks. They might be pretty unhappy about the changing demographics in the ACTUAL OC of today, versus the white flight suburban illusion that drew people there a generation ago.
I’m glad I never moved to OC 25 years ago based on the hope of a safe white suburb. I love the richness of the big city that is willingly diverse, not just tolerant of an inevitable encroachment/invasion.

  17. Octimes Says:

California and the US will never be the same. It’s really hard to see this play out….on every level of government. With the open border mentality, our ‘homeland” security means nada.

  18. Grunt41 Says:

For the sake of argument, let’s say that she is tough on border enforcement. Does that matter? No. SHe does not have to appeal to an electorate or constituency, but to the whims and wants of President-Elect Obama. Gov. Janet is not a free agent, but has to do as Obama wants, or she will be fired.

  19. gareeyph Says:

just rmember obama fans- U GET WHAT U VOTE FOR

  20. SicknTired Says:

    Hey GH Weiss
As an “OC white folk”, I could care less what color my neighbors are. It doesn’t change the fact that before certain dregs of society started moving into my neighborhood, we didn’t have graffiti, abandoned shopping carts, vandalism, unkempt yards, or xmas lights hanging year round.

On behalf of the OC, thank you for not moving here with your ignorance of how we live or what we stand for.

  21. Leh Says:

Sanchez doesn’t care about the ghettos, gangs and graffiti that have trashed California cities.
In the last 10 years since Sanchez has been the lone democrat, her district is the butt of Orange County’s joke, but does she care? No, these do-nothing politicians use minorities, they keep them oppressed and use them for the votes.

  22. GH Weiss Says:

    Dear SicknTired,
I think that the phrase you meant to use is “I couldn’t care less” (not “I could care less”).

I live in LA, but I work in “the OC” every work day. It’s enough to have learned that “dregs” come in all colors, and white is one of them.

  23. alterego55 Says:

Weiss: It has nothing to do with color, it has to do with culture. It just so happens the Mexican culture is not one most Americans want in their neighborhood. The same can be said of the white Appalachian culture as well - most Americans don’t want it.

  24. tax payer Says:

People pass this on this is the truth

Subject: The video clip that was not allowed in USA

What the ruling party does not want you to see. Now they also want to turn out the lights on what is and has happened in Illinois and Chicago .
This video shows that George Bush tried to warn Congress starting in 2001 that this economic crisis was coming, if something was not done. But congress refused to listen, along with Barney Franks. This video says it all.
The liberal AMERICAN media did not want this video on You Tube, so they had Time Warner threaten a law suit (proprietary rights) if it was not taken off.
This link is of the same video but is routed through Canada . Everyone in America needs to see this!
