A lawyer for the former mistress of ex-sheriff Mike Carona will cross-examine today the government’s key witness, Don Haidl.
Debra Hoffman, whose affair with Carona has been repeatedly mentioned in this trial, is charged with public corruption and bankruptcy fraud. Deputy Federal Public Defender Sylvia Torres-Guillen told the judge Thursday that she plans to question Haidl all day.
During opening statements, Torres-Guillen alleged that federal prosecutors only charged Hoffman to show Carona had an affair, and that Hoffman didn’t disclose money in bank documents because of bad legal advice.
The trial starts at 8 a.m. Today will be Haidl’s 10th day of testimony. Read my story about his testimony on Thursday — and how the judge criticized Carona’s defense lawyer — here.
About the case

What’s that popping sound I hear? It must be the little sheriff being forcibly extracted from Mickadeit’s pie hole as he’s dragged away to prison. Too bad so sad Frankie. Looks like your old pal’s high dollar defense team has nothing in the tank after all. Too bad prop 8 passed, depriving you and Carona of a nice jail house wedding and conjucal visits to boot!
Can’t wait to read how you build up Hoffman’s attorney. Ol Don Haidl is playing you the fool just like he did Skippy. Birds of a feather…
