Don Haidl, the prosecution’s key witness against ex-lawman Mike Carona, told jurors today that Carona and his former mistress kept a “nest egg” and planned to run away together after Carona’s son turned 18.
Former O.C. Sheriff Carona is on trial, along with his former mistress Debra Hoffman. He is accused of enriching himself, his wife, Deborah, and Hoffman by accepting cash and bribes in exchange for public favors. He has repeatedly maintained his innocence. Deborah Carona goes to trial later.
Haidl, Carona’s former assistant sheriff who began testifying Nov. 4, said this morning that Carona also got Hoffman, who is a lawyer, on a state board based in Sacramento. Carona wanted Hoffman to be on the board so “they would spend time in Sacramento together,” Haidl said.
Haidl also told jurors that Carona got Hoffman’s husband, Robert Schroff, a job at the Sheriff’s Department around December 2000. Carona wanted to know where Schroff was during the daytime, Haidl testified.

Life gets tough when emotion gets involved. He just let it get out. Affairs are always hard.
All I have to say is I’m glad we have taken down a corrupt official especially in law enforcement.. Hopefully he pasys for his crimes just like all the people he has arrested in the past..I’m sure they’ll all be waiting for him in prison if he’s convicted..

Just where was their “run away” destination? Yeah Carona was a flimsy law enforcement officer & really no more than that, but did he know secret places where no one would find him? Oh what a pile of crap…”run away”…children play run away games…maybe he’s really no more than a child.
Carona’s wife is turning out to be a shell of a person.
A movie? About this boring, petty, grasping little man and his likewise friends? About their cheap little improbable schemes to make “thousands of dollars”? If even on the lame Lifetime Movie Channel, a film about these cretons would fulfill them and make their dispicable behavior warranted in their eyes. Their lives and this trial belong on the back pages of the Saddleback Valley PennySaver.

It was not one affair, but many liasons with whomever his eye caught, and looked back at him. He is a horny dog in a uniform. He is now paying for his immoral
