Total Buzz ~ The insiders' hotline to Orange County government and politics

Tell us your Election 2008 stories

November 2nd, 2008, 6:18 pm · 13 Comments · posted by J. GALLEGO

More than 20 candidates and nearly two years ago the race for President began, in that time there have been more twists and turns than an mystery novel; favorites dropped out, rifts formed then healed again and eventually the race came down to two men.

In Orange County and California the hottest topic was the proposed ban on same-sex marriage. Prop. 8 brought thousands to the streets in support of and in opposition to the ballot measure. The most recent polls show Prop. 8 as a toss up.

Tuesday, millions will go to the polls to choose between John McCain and Barack Obama. They will vote yes or no on Prop. 8.  Many of those people will be making their choice at the last minute; others have known for months who they will vote for.  No matter what happens Election Day 2008 will be a day to remember.

We’d like to hear your election stories, tell us the road you took to get to the choice you will make Tuesday. What was the defining moment that made you think McCain was the man who should be president or Obama was the best choice? Did Sarah Palin move you? Or did it anger you that Hillary Clinton was not chosen to run on the Democratic ticket?

Send us your photos  or videos and memories and thoughts , comment below or write to elections@ocregister.com.

On Tuesday come back here to read our full election coverage:

In the meantime check out our coverage of the election so far:

I worked at an Obama phone bank in Tustin Sunday calling undecided voters in Ohio. The number of volunteers who showed up to help the Obama get out the vote effort was amazing.

I took a picture of my ballot this election because this will most likely be the last free/capitalist American ballot I will get to cast.

I worked at an Obama fundraiser.
It is so awesome to finally see communism taking hold in America!
    Obama forever !

It doesn’t matter how much money was spent on any campaign, be that a proposal or the one for the president. EVERYONE spent too much money and there are still homeless out there, still those that are about to get foreclosures on their homes, and still many, many people who are ill with a variety of diseases and cancers that cannot be cured without a lot of money. What will change? I say the all the above will still be around in four years, no matter who or what wins.

2 years is too dang long for a campaign. Too much news, too many pundits, too many anchors, too many lies, too many storires, too many ridiculous candidates, too many negative people.

I propose a new law 6 month campaign and 10 million only.

  • newshound14 says:

Twas the night before Tuesday throughout the campaign,
Republicans pleaded voters not use their brain.
While ads and stump speeches and flyers proclaimed,
Obama is scary he must be defamed.

Without any plan for an economy half dead,
Palin and McCain must frighten us instead.
With lies and with smears and ridiculous crap,
Their campaign plays us all for ignorant saps.

Watching the news there arose such inane chatter,
I said to my wife they are mad as a hatter.
Eight years of these dopes caused our markets to crash.
They want four more giving the wealthy more cash.

While jobs disappear and businesses do not grow,
John McCain distracts us with a shameful smear show.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
One rising above all the slanderous smear.

With a masterful plan to get US out of hock,
I knew in a moment it must be Barack.
He spoke of the changes we all need to make,
America’s future is what is at stake.

Now jobs! Infrastructure! Now national defense!
Education! Healthcare! Our task is immense!
To waste time dividing America with fear,
Is at worst insidious at best insincere.

Obama has traveled to blue states and to red,
And I hope you have listened to what he has said.
We are all of US Americans proud and brave,
We must all WORK AS ONE for our future to save.

His eyes were like steel! his voice rolled like thunder!
Why would he go through this gauntlet I wonder.
With a top legal mind and prestigious degrees,
He could be quite wealthy enjoying great ease.

A heartland moral compass and ethic to work,
Has driven Obama to slog through the murk.
So go out and VOTE! It’s our obligation,
Barack Obama will heal this great nation.

We can all be cynical, jeer, mock and critique,
But all this is will be over in less than a week.
Inspired by hope will you VOTE for this man?
I hope that all of you answer YES WE CAN!

I’ve been registered to vote since I was 18 and during those elections I never took the time to vote because of who was running for president. 2008, I changed my mind because maybe there’s more than an ounce in me that cares about what life would be like in America. Alot has changed since my parents days. And now that I’m a mother, I don’t want my child growing up thinking that certain things are only for the rich and nothing for the middle class and poor. It saddens me to see that middle class citizens work hard to support a family and the more money we make (holding double or even triple jobs), the less money we see…. I do want to see change and I really don’t care if any one objects my opinion. People are different and have different backgrounds and different views. People need to respect what others believe in and just listen to where they’re coming from.
At the beginning of the race, I wasn’t planning on voting for Barack Obama because I have never heard of him before. I was going for Hillary Clinton then I became undecided and wanted nothing to do with politics. I noticed how the economy was changing and jobs not able to meet with the changes. I was able to read up on Obama’s views and thought, “hey that’s not a bad idea.” He mentioned “middle class.” And what other president (s)has mentioned anything about helping the middle class??????

  • Our family went to vote this morning in Woodbridge.

Nothing out of the ordinary except a little longer than usual line.

There was a family standing in front of us.

A mom, a dad, a daughter, probably 6 years old, a son about 8 and grandma.

The dad and the son were dressed in suits and ties, the grandma and her granddaugter in pretty flowerprint dresses.

Mom wore her work outfit….boots, cap and fatigues as a private in the US Army.

You could tell they were a proud family.

    All dressed up.

    All together.

    All black.

Today is gonna be a good day.

I went to the polls at 7 when they opened. I talked to 2 other people while we stood in line. I was there because my absentee ballot never came. The two people I talked to said the same thing. How come no one in my area got their ballots?

  • Amy St. John says:

I have little faith in the accuracy of the election…. as I have read above others did not receive their absentee ballots. I sent off for my absentee ballot well before the deadline and I never received it. I am in GA for my daughter’s wedding and now unable to vote! If the few of us writting on here did not receive our ballots, how many others have not been able to place their vote????????????? This is rediculous! Every time you turn around, they are telling you to vote and the people who want to and TRY TO…… are not able.

  • Miss Denise says:

In response to newshound14’s written word/Poem..
POWERFUL, Thought Provoking and best written word I’ve seen for a while!!! :-) Of course I voted for Barack!
