Republican absence kills UCI voter forum

October 8th, 2008, 4:45 pm · 3 Comments · posted by BRIAN JOSEPH, Sacramento Correspondent

UC Irvine planned to have a candidates forum this evening, but organizers had to cancel it when all of the Republican candidates said they couldn’t make it.

The forum was going to feature candidates of all parties running for State Senate Districts 33 and 35, Assembly Districts 70, 71 and 73 and the 48th Congressional district. The only people who said they couldn’t come were the Republican candidates: Assemblyman Chuck DeVore (70th Assembly District), Jeff Miller (71 AD, who is running unopposed), Diane Harkey (73 AD), Assemblywoman Mimi Walters (33rd Senate District), State Sen. Tom Harman (35 SD) and Congressman John Campbell.

Quite a coincidence, huh? I’ve heard of Republicans in Illinois and Indiana ducking debates this year too. Maybe this is another example of how being Republican just ain’t a good thing this election year.

Just to let you know… I’m the Dem candidate for the 73rd AD and when I was called, I was told Diane Harkey had confirmed. Sooo, it must have been a message from the party to say “stay home.” And, this would have been the only live forum we were attending.

Tonight Diane is crusing in Dana Point Harbor for a fundraiser instead of attending the SAM event in Costa Mesa for candidates. We should see how many Reps show up there, too!!

  2. Heather Says:

I recommend that rather than posting who didn’t show up, why not post the names of those Democrats who agreed to attend?

    And looking forward to participating.
Going on vacation for a few days, so i’ll be back
