Debate: Meg Whitman, Warren Buffett to head U.S. Treasury?

October 7th, 2008, 6:19 pm · 4 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

John McCain suggested that Meg Whitman, former eBay CEO, might be his secretary of the Treasury. Barack Obama said Warren Buffett is among those who might get the nod from him. Our debate panel was asked wht they thought of these two possibilities.

Coto de Caza Republican Laer Pearce, a public relations consultant who favors McCain, preferred McCain’s choice.

“I’m hardly a finance guy, but I think it’s essential that the next treasury secretary not be a Wall Street or investment banking person,” he said. “As such, Whitman would be the better choice because she ran a company and made jobs; Buffet the lesser because he’s basically a stock wheeler-dealer.”

More response to this question to come….

Actually, McCain first suggested Buffett, and Obama agreed. Obama didn’t name anyone else, so I seriously wonder who he might pick. I think we all know McCain’s choice would be Phil Gramm, but he didn’t dare say it during the debate. I seriously doubt Buffett would serve.

Also, Buffett has created more jobs than Meg Whitman will ever dream of. Everybody hates Wall St. right now, but Treasury HAS to be headed by somebody who understands finance and banking. That is what it’s all about. You can put an industrialist or dotcommer into the Commerce department, but not Treasury.

  • I can’t see them choosing Warren Buffett (although they should !) - I reckon they were just saying what voters wanted to here. Meg Whitman on the other hand would be a disaster, as she was at Ebay.
