Rep. John Campbell

Rep. John Campbell is reviewing the 106-page financial rescue bill just dropped on his desk.

“I’m one of the easier people to make happy with this thing,’’ said Campbell, R-Irvine, who was prepared to accept Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson’s first plan to stave off financial collapse on Wall Street.

“I am inclined to support it,’’ Campbell said, although he wants to review the fine print and listen to what his GOP colleagues say at a party conference later today.

Here’s the way Campbell described his understanding of the timetable: The House will come into session at 1 p.m. pacific time for some votes that are really an effort to get lawmakers back to the Capitol. Then the Democrats and Republicans will hold separate meetings.

After that, sometime tonight the House will vote on the rule for this financial bill. That is a measure that sets out the procedures for voting. A final vote on the package is expected tomorrow.

Campbell said he doesn’t know yet how some of his colleagues who have opposed this idea will vote.
A key factor important to many GOP members was that the government create an insurance product for the bad mortgages Wall Street is faced with and let the government guarantee that rather than have taxpayers foot the bailout bill.

Campbell said the compromise reached was that a guaranteed insurance product would be included but it won’t be mandatory. He also said he’s sure the GOP members will want to hear from Minority Whip Roy Blunt the reasons behind his acceptance of the provisions.

I really enjoyed the Congressman’s earlier statement where he said the masses don’t approve of the bailout. But they only have checking accounts and 401k accounts. This is too complex for them to understand.

Campbell sits on the house financial services committee. I wonder how much dinero he got from the financial services industry? He was ready to vote for Paulson’s origninal bill that would have given him the power of a king and the full $700 billion in one payment. Vote against Campbell in November. It seems he’s forgotten that we live in a representative democracy. He’s supposed to vote on behalf of the people he represents. The large majority of us are dead set against the bailout. Looks like the lobbyists money had more influence. Vote the clown out of office in November!

I live in work in Irvine & may move thier soon if I do & Campbell does vote for this bailout I will certainly vote against him next election!
I have to agree with Dana Rohrabacher, anybody have John Cambell’s
e-mail address so I can try to convice him to vote against it?
This bailout just DOESN’T SIT RIGHT WITH ME! I think more more blood is still needed on Wall St to make the pain sink in so this doesn’t happen again & paid for with main st’s blood & sweat. And the interest on 700 billion is just going to break the backs of our children & thier children in the future

Unfortunately, if this bill doesn’t pass in some form, many innocent people will endure economic suffering. They will suffer for the bad bets made by Wall Street. geniuses, Main Street Banks and Mortgage Bankers, as well as people who either bought homes they couldn’t afford or stripped the equity out of their homes to live a lifestyle above their income.

At the risk of appearing heartless and knowing full well that austere times will lie ahead sans the bill’s passing, I say let those who lived by the sword, die by the sword. A free market has winners and losers. You bet wrong, you lose. If there’s no pain here, no lesson will be learned. Amerca needs a wake up call and now’s the time. It won’t be pretty, but the predicted Armegeddon won’t occur.

  • Rae says:

Campbell’s support of this deal is unacceptable. I will never support him again, because he is selling average Americans down the river for a dollar. The ramifications of what we are doing today will be huge for our children. It is time for this generation to bit the bullet of all of the irresponsible spending so that our children can have a better future.

  • BF says:

John Campbell , who knows that we “the masses” are to simple to understand so many big words, or complex money thingies…

Perhaps he can help me out by making the whole voting thing easier. Don’t bother putting your name on another ballot that crosses in front of me!

  • truthbomb says:

I cannot wait to vote Campbell out of office! I have never participating actively in a campaign, but I plan on raising money and canvassing for WHOEVER is Campbell’s opponent. And when Campbell is out of office, he can go work for his daddy Bill Gross at PIMCO.

  • Rob Nel says:

It seems to me that the vast majority of Americans do not want a bailout. These are normal average everyday hardworking people who do not have vast amounts of money in stock markets if any at all. They did not max out on their home equity line of credit or default on their mortgages. They are also not in the market to borrow money for a new car or any other major purchase. So who is this bailout for?

  • David says:

John, You will not get my vote in November, nor my mother’s nor my brothers’. We understand the ramifications of the “no” vote. You have sold yourself to the “fat cats” of the financial market. This will be the first time for my family that we have voted “other” than Republican.
