Sanchez doesn’t want to give Treasury a “blank check”

Rep. Loretta Sanchez needs to know a lot more about the Bush administration’s proposed Wall Street bailout before the package will get her vote.

“I would hope that we would not just write a blank check,” the Garden Grove Democrat told me today. “We need to see how far in debt these companies are, how far out of control. And who’s gotten the golden parachutes.”

Sanchez said she needs to hear from Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson. “He needs to come and paint the picture for me as to what the conditions are. ”

“I still have confidence that we can get this back on track,” Sanchez said.  But, she added, “I’m not going to vote for something unless I see the plan in front of me.” And so far lawmakers haven’t been given any details, despite the fact that they could be asked to vote in the next couple of days.

Congress is trying to adjourn by the end of the week for the elections. But Sanchez said she believes her colleagues should be willing to stay longer if necessary.

“If we have to stay next week we stay next week,” she said. “We have to attempt to get it right, not just sign on to it because we have to go back and campaign. The American people expect we’re going to take a look and make the best judgment we can.”

    Sounds like a fiscal conservative!

  • Republicans are TRAITORS says:

    WTF-
Liberals protecting taxpayers, republicans stealing from the taxpayers. I think it is time to vote out the republicans that pretended they were fiscally conservative. John “bailout” Campbell is a liar. He pretends to support small government and financial responsibility but he has voted for every bailout taxpayer boondogle to date.
