Without a State Budget: Day 52 (A tired script)

August 21st, 2008, 6:24 am · Post a Comment · posted by BRIAN JOSEPH, Sacramento Correspondent

As reported earlier, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled a “compromise budget” yesterday in the hopes of spurring some action in the Legislature. But as predicted, it’s not getting a lot of support.

Republicans, predictably, don’t like his proposal to temporarily raise the sales tax by 1 cent. (The plan also calls for lowering the sales tax by a 1 1/4 cent three years later.) Democrats, well, my read is Democrats just don’t like it. Senate Leader Don Perata reportedly said he’s not ready to take the idea “because that’s not a negotiation, that’s a capitulation” while Assembly Speaker Karen Bass’ office reportedly is saying the governor’s additional cuts are too much.

So, once again, we have all this bluster yesterday and it apparently amounts to nothing.
