Without a State Budget: Day 16 (Zzzzzz)

July 16th, 2008, 6:50 am · Post a Comment · posted by BRIAN JOSEPH, Sacramento Correspondent

Members of the Assembly took a cue from the state Senate yesterday and went gone on vacation themselves, leaving the Capitol virtually lawmaker-free, except for the leaders negotiating the budget. Barring any breakthrough, both houses will be dark until Aug. 4.

Don’t hold your breath.

Beyond that, there’s little more going down. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is facing increased pressure to do something about the budget, which is surprising only in that it’s taken this long to materialize. New Senate Republican Leader Dave Cogdill spoke before the Sacramento Press Club yesterday, reportedly telling the audience the right budget is more important than timely one.

And then, in the same breath, he said a budget could be ready by Aug. 1.

Riiiiight. I’m taking a nap. There’s nothing to see here.
