Rohracher says lifting drilling ban “long overdue”

July 14th, 2008, 12:32 pm · 9 Comments · posted by Dena Bunis, Washington Bureau Chief

dana2.jpgRep. Dana Rohrabacher is behind President Bush’s move to lift the executive order banning offshore drilling.

But the Huntington Beach Republican said “it’s too bad that the president and it’s even worse that the Congress has to wait until the American people are personally suffering until they increase the supply of energy available to our country.”

Rohrabacher said he knows that the Democratic majority in Congress is not inclined to follow Bush’s lead on this. But, he said, “this is a democratic society and changes proceed in steps.

“Are we going to do it? It depends on if when the public starts filling up their cars with gas and see it’s $80 or $90, if they scream and yell and demand that their government quit representing radical environmental interests instead of their own interests.”

Yes, it’s those radical environmentalists who have been running the country who have driven gas prices to record levels.

Oh wait. It’s George Bush and his party, including Dana Rohrabacher who have been running the country for the last eight years.

It’s their invasion of Iraq that has reduced supply and added a risk premium to the price of oil.

It’s their massve deficits to fund their war that have driven tax that have driven the dollar to record lows, and increased the price of oil.

It’s Bush’s economic and energy policies that have wrecked our economy.

And Mr. Rohrabacher thinks he can blame radical environmentaists?

Why doesn’t he just blame Mexicans for high gas prices, like he blames them for every other failure of the Bush Administration?

    correct as usual.

congress holding the country hostage with their ridiculous policies for at least the last 30 years. instead China and Russia are drinking our milkshake by drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and selling it back to us.

    thanks a lot, enviro wackos….

Yes, great comment. Commies and Mexicans and “There will be Blood”.

If you had mentioned Reagan, it would have been the perfect message from Dana Rohrabacher and his friends who are in the bucket for Big Pharma and Big Oil.

And you guys blame enviros for the massive deficits and the declining dollar?

  • steve says:

I bet Dana blames the Banking disaster on the Enviro wackos too!!!
How about a Congress that is holding up the nations Sustainable Energy Bill which is starving homegrown Solar Cell companies of needed capital and putting thousands of honest hardworking Americans out of work! Instead congress is more than willing to bail their fundraising banker crooks out with taxpayer money. Another term of Rohrbacher would be a disaster for this country, let him go.

  • chris says:

there is only a marginal amount of oil offshore but the potential cost to our tourist economy through polluted air and water is enormous

It took the huge spill in Santa Barbara to learn why offshore drilling was not a good idea maybe we have forgotten

We need alternative fuels and transportation, and we need to stop the manipulations, there are any number of federal drilling contracts in place that are not in use - while the industry complains about wanting to drill in alaska and offshore there are countless leases on federal lands where drilling is underutilized or not happening at all - why? because that is a way for the industry to constrain supply and keep prices up, which is their perrogative as a smart business but don’t blame the environmentalists for the supply squeeze

  • bk says:

    rohrabacher is lazy and crazy

he has sat on the science committee for twelve years and we have had no major research into alternative fuels or efficiency

he wants offshore drilling but has been completely absent on wind and solar energy - which regardless of what role you may think it plays in our future, the technology is made in California and the immediate benefits would be to California employers

he is quick to blame the crazy whacko environmentalist but provides no true solutions himself

debbie cook, an energy expert, and moderate, will be a great breath of fresh air in congress

  • Greenhut fan says:

Let’s not forget what Rohrabacher and Bush have really championed with their energy policies - massive tax cuts for the big oil companies so they can make record profits and their executives can take home incredible amounts of wealth.

This is just one more attempt for Bush to give away to Big Oil before he leaves office.

The pure cynicism of this move is staggering.

  • BM says:

If this blog was attempting to actually cover this issue in an unbiased and comprehensive way, it might have included the fact that even Bush’s and McCain’s advisors admit that removing the ban on offshore drilling will not reduce gas prices in the near future.
