Harry Sidhu’s unusual campaign

May 29th, 2008, 1:11 pm · 2 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

harry-sidhu.jpgAs if it wasn’t enough to abandon the proven strategy of attacking one’s opponent, now state Senate candidate Harry Sidhu is, among other things, boasting that he’s cheap in this mailer.

Not that he’s cheap and so will save you money in Sacramento. Just a simple statement, “I’m just like you but, maybe a little cheaper.” (sic)

The point of the mailer is to acknowledge the numerous times opponent Mimi Walters‘ campaign has referred alluding to his ethnicity by photoshopping a picture of him against a backdrop of Indian-looking art - and to stand up for himself as an American.

Walter’s consultant, Dave Gilliard, responded to the charge that it was Indian art: “Not Indian art according to the stock photo site my artist bought it from. http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=11858500Notice the ‘keywords’ - nothing about India.”

Sidhu says it is, Gilliard refutes it. I’m leaning toward Sidhu’s take on this one, but judge for yourself.

Sidhu was born in India but has lived in the U.S. for 34 years. On Monday, when I asked him about the effect of being an immigrant on his campaign, he did a delicate dance, including denying that he would lose any votes because he’s an immigrant.

But does he have to work harder to get elected than if he was born in this country.?

“Everything I’ve attained, I’ve gotten because I’ve work twice as hard,” he said.

Here’s Red County’s post on the mailer, and here’s The Liberal OC’s post on El Pollo Loco handing out Sidhu literature.

And here’s Red County’s entry on Sidhu putting campaign literature on the back of Pollo Loco advertising. Sidhu owns at least a couple Pollo Loco franchises.

BTW, Sidhu said those 140,000 unmailed attack fliers he shredded cost nearly $100,000. Doesn’t sound like a cheap move to me.

  • Glendale Joe says:

Anyone notice the typo in Harry’s mailer. His opponents should watch out, as Harry slipped and wrote “cleaver” rather than “clever.”

  • Bolsavik says:

@Glendale Joe: Oh please tell me the misspell was not on a web address. Please please please.
