He should have impeccable moral character. He should not be a politician. He should restore integrity to a department with a “black eye.”
In other words, he should not be anything like former Sheriff Mike Carona.
A public comment session offered by the Board of Supervisors today brought out 24 people who offered supervisors advice on hiring a new sheriff. They quoted scripture and C.S. Lewis, mentioned the many scandals Carona suffered and all spoke about restoring trust to an embattled department.
Most of the speakers — except the homeless guy who said the candidate should be just “reasonably competent and reasonably honest” – said the best candidate should come from within Orange County and have a proven track record of law enforcement management.
“This person’s gotta be Superman,” Supervisor Chris Norby said after one speaker read a lengthy list of traits seemingly straight out of an HR manual.
Most speakers urged the supervisors to pick, well, the polar opposite of Carona.
Randy Rimmey, a retired police officer who lives in San Clemente, told the board that the candidates should be asked who they would hire to be their closest aides. That, of course, is a reference to the scandals surrounding Carona’s choices of assistant sheriffs George Jaramillo and Don Haidl.
“You are who you pick,” Rimmey said.
Frank Nin, an Orange County Sheriff’s sergeant, said the best candidate will have to have the leadership traits to improve morale.
“This person needs to lead the troops,” Nin said. He told me after the meeting he supports former Lt. Bill Hunt.
Hunt certainly had his representatives in the audience and there were also a large number of speakers from Mission Viejo, where acting Sheriff Jack Anderson lives.
“I think we have to have someone very carefully cleaning house,” said Connie Lee of Mission Viejo.
Although Supervisor John Moorlach didn’t want people speaking for specific candidates, several speakers did, including Wayne Quint, the president of the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs, who again mentioned his support of Hunt.
Supervisors next step will be the public interviews of the candidates that have survived the search firm’s winnowing process. That’s set for May 27.

Keyes for Sheriff!
From his own comments:
“I am a business executive and I will run the Sheriff’s Office in a professional and dignified manner. No secret deals, no special favors, no ulterior motives and no graft will be condoned at any level.”
“I stand for the Golden Rule.” That is what the Sheriff’s Department is here to deliver to the public and it’s really just that straightforward.
I’m sure Rodney King could use a few more bucks. He’d be perfect and everyone would just get along.
Hey Frank, aren’t you just a tad worried that Jack et.al are not going to make life just a little rough in your world. I thought Supervisor Moorloch did not want to hear about our personal choice for the next Sheriff. I am disappointed that Wayne would bother to vocalise ANY support for Hunt ..Everyone on the entire planet knows that he has as much chance of being the next Sherif as the electrician who applied ( no this is not a slam of Bill just an observation ) The next Sheriff will be from the outside and will not be connected in any way shape or form with Carona or his campain team.
Boot. If you watched the meeting on the web or attended the meeting in person you would probably have a better understanding as to what’s up. Cause it sure ain’t going to be someone from the outside. If I read the article correctly, Frank was asked outside of the meeting who he supported. Anderson knows he has close to zero support from the troops.( See AOCDS poll ) So I don’t think Frank has much to worry about.
Anderson Would be the worst choice as he cares nothing for the department only wants to further his political career. He tells the deputies that he only wants honesty&transperancy but yet he does a coverup concerning the situation last Jan concerning the suicide on a dept members family. Gee what a example to set.
What the sheriff’s department needs is new leadership. That is an easy answer given the debacle they have had to live through the last few years. Ask any one in law enforcement management and they will tell you OCSD needs a fresh set of eyes and new set of ideas. The organization has inbreed for far too long. Most departments are made up of a combination of lateral officers and managers who bring a wealth of ideas and energy to their agencies. I hope the OCSD sees the value in change and understands how the public sees the department as being a succession of good old boys one after another. Whoever the board of supervisors selects will have the unenviable task of instituting organizational wide cultural change.
Good luck.
Seems clear OC board wants the same old whore…although they do want her to put out while wearing a new dress.
Randolph Rimmey how did you get to retire at such a young age. By the way how are those pending criminal charges going in Orange County Superior Court?
Orange County Sheriffs are deeply rooted with thugs, hidden agendas, and self serving Sheriffs. Everywhere you turn, there is a problems. Beside all the known issues during the past 2 years, the existings Sheriffs and system are rotten.
There is one candadite that shines over all the others and that is Tommy Tunson, bi-lingual, huge Army command posts in terrorism. Has his law degree, grew up in santa Ana so he will hiy the ground running but not part of the old mess of cornoa’s. If you really want some change need to look at this guy!! Tommy Tunson!
Are we not suppose to elect the County Sheriff? Why not let Anderson sub till Nov. and let the people vote? Are we going to sit by and watch the Board of Superviors pick one of there buddies?? This sucks.
We cannot have someone from within the dept. try to pick up the very shattered pieces. This needs to be someone that does have impeccable moral character. He should not be a politician, (or is politican secretly part of the deal)…he really still should not be. Jack Anderson has tried to prove he can do the job but he is no more to be trusted than Carona & his cronies proved themselves to be!!!
Someone let Carlos out of his cell again. Carlos, shut the hell up loser. Nobody wants to read your pisspoor English attempts.
The department needs a proven leader who will have the respect of the deputies, but also a clear view of what needs to be done and the bollocks to do it. To run a large Sheriffs department, he should also have some experience in running a fairly large corrections facility in addition to patrol experience. He should have experience in dealing with other municipal, county and federal agencies. He should be familiar with the county, while not actually being involved in the old regime. He should be able to garner support from the politicos without being their hand puppet. Sounds like Paul Walters to me.
Just curious, what is the consensus on this blog as to who would be the most honest candidate?
We should be able to select the next top cop. And all of our current cops are bad. Every cop and every citizen knows what is going on in our jails and nobody has done anything about it because they are all bad. Let’s stick Corona in OC Jail just like others awaiting trail.
We need a cowboy for a while until our laws are enforced.
Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio
Bill Hunt ran against the disgraced ex-sheriff under the motto:
RESTORE INTEGRITY.
Enough said.
OCGator:
Jack Anderson IS the Supervisors’ Buddy!
They are all Republicans and Anderson is the immediate past Sgt. at Arms, and is hand picked by the Schroeder’s.
I think only those who ran for Sheriff before should be considered. They were willing to step up back then, and put themselves out in the public eye, spending time and money on getting the job. You gotta really want it to do that. Bill Hunt knew he was putting himself in jeopardy runing against Carona. Frank Nin was one of those who was temporarily demoted by Carona after the election, while Carona was grinding his axe against anyone who had the audicity to support anyone but himself.
We don’t necessarily need to look outside the county, but I think we should have an outsider pick the next Sheriff. I can hear the Board now, in picking Anderson “We want to have continunity in the management and not change horses yet again…” Easy, cheap way out. Honestly, don’t know enough about Anderson to have an opinion.
Maybe we need to clean out the supes and start over as well?
You guys really need to take a good long look at Tommy Tunson, he is everything you guys say you want. Experience, clean, local, and Bi-lingula. Take a look.
Pretty sure Hunt is bi-lingual, which skills he used while acting as a Supervisor in the OC Jail system.
Somebody needs to ask Tommy Tunson why he didn’t list his stint working for Stanton PD on his resume. Wasn’t he ran out of the department?
Listen to the voters. Let Bill Hunt fulfill his promise to RESTORE INTEGRITY TO THE ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT!
Do we really want an oportunist to be the next Sheriff of Orange County? Three reasons “inbred” was not the cause, Mike Carona-George Jaramillo-Don Haidle! These were not from within, not even distant cousins. From the “outside.”
Appoint someone who was willing to put it all on the line to change things. Not someone who was willing to fill out a application and give an interview with 5 people. Appoint someone willing to lose their job and income to do the right thing. Not someone willing to move to sunny Orange County with the garantee of a big paycheck and a great job!
Moorlach predicted the bankruptcy in Dec ‘94, Hunt predicted the meltdown of Carona in the last election. The Board of Supervisors should have let this decision go to the voters in a November general election. They did not, but they can do the right thing and listen to 100,000 voters.
Urge your Supervisor to listen to your voice and make your vote count!
APPOINT BILL HUNT TO SHERIFF OF ORANGE COUNTY, THE VOTERS CHOICE!
Paul Walters is by far the best choice. He has the experience, integreity and would have the backing and loyalty on Rank&File. These are things Anderson Does not have at all!!!!!!!!!!!! Anderson only objective is to do what it takes to please Moorlach.
the public should vote, not the sups. Ask each candidate if they know about all the crap going on it the jails. if they do and did nothing to correct it then it will just be business as usual. if they know nothing about it then they are stupid and don’t deserve the top cop position.
