Absolut reconquista

April 4th, 2008, 9:54 am · 30 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

absolut3.jpgThe ad from Absolut vodka is causing a bit of a stir. Some are even shaken by it. As you may know, it is a play on the idea of Aztlan, which takes parts of the U.S. that once belonged to Mexico and names the whole thing after ancestral Aztec lands.

Some radical Chicanos have called for establishing Aztlan as an independent nation. Many anti-illegal immigration activists have pointed to this as evidence that Mexico wants to take over the U.S.

Conservative columnist Michelle Malkin has collected some comments on her site, giving a feeling of the resentment — conspiracy even – because of this ad.

Hit ‘em where it hurts! Next time you order, “Shaken, stirred, just NOT Absolut!”
Make mine Ketel One, Grey Goose, Belvedere, Hangar One, Stoli Elit, Ciroc, Skyy 90, Level, 42 Below….

  • Sovereign says:

It just gets more and more mainstream. I wonder what vodka all those illegal aliens will be drinking on their amnesty tantrum on May 1st. Heck, I bet Absolut and miller lite are official sponsors.

Wake up Americans who refuse to see what is right infront of you!

  • Chris says:

This gringo won’t be buying Absolut anymore, that’s for sure. What a shame, with cocktail season right around the corner . . . I was just about ready to hit Costco for my jumbo sized bottle of Absolut Orange.

    I guess I’ll be buying Tito’s at Trader Joe’s . . . it’s better vodka anyway.

  • Donald says:

I concur, boycott Absolut and let then know that the add is an offence
    to American Sovernty..

  • chris says:

The ad is absolut-ly disgusting. Not an Absolut fan anyway. Ketel One or Grey Goose if you are going to be drinking vodka.

  • Unconcerned Citizen says:

This threat is less of an offense to American sovereignity than your spelling.

  • Someone says:

More proof of how unhinged some conservatives are. An ad campaign becomes a conspiracy.

The last time I saw such paranoia was in the 70’s when it seemed to be a common side effect of smoking Marijuana.

  • next door neighbor says:

Wow! You people are paranoid. Ads are created to cause emotions, catch your attention and sell. That’s all. So what if we did get overtaken by Mexicans? At least there will be better food to eat.

  • Bert Green says:

It’s funny. In fact, it’s even funnier knowing that it’s making fun of the conservatives. Ha Ha.

  • Dina says:

    Boycott Absolute.

  • Dina says:

    Here is a company contact to complain;

    jeffrey.moran@absolut.com

I already sent an email to express my anger at the ant-US stand of the company.

  • politica says:

Wow. To all those people who are so threatened by this ad - if our “sovereignty” relies on an absolute ad, then we’ve got far greater problems than we already do in the world.

I’ll boycott Absolute when every one agrees to boycott decades of ads objectifying women (or men) or other such questionable areas.

  • Paul says:

LIghten up folks, this gringo from Nebraska thinks its hilarious. It’s a Swedish company trying to sell vodka (and courting controversy). Face the facts, it WAS a land grab (who of course had earlier grabbed it from indians). It’s good to see world from different perspectives and not just our own U.S. centric view. Relax, have a cocktail (absolut or whatever), and enjoy the history lesson.

  • American-ized says:

The new owner of Absolut is Pernod Ricard, USA, and their headquarters is located at Purchase, N.Y.

    Phone number: 914-848-4800

    Email: pernod.ricard@absolut.com

I have voiced my outrage thusly and hope many U.S. individuals will do the same and further, discontinue using their products. Hit them hard in their pocketbooks and see what happens…

  • Peter says:

Since when did it become insulting to depict historically correct maps? Grow up! This ad was run in Mexico, NOT in the U.S. By the way, it’s a Mexican ad agency who came up with this idea (but of course, Absolut carries the responsibility). Personally, I think the ad is great. Absolut Vodka is famous for clever ads and has won many prices it.

To boycot Absolut because of this ad would be about as stupid as, let’s say, Swedes boycotting American talk-show programs because occassionally, jokes are made about Sweden (”Swedish bikini team” - there’s no such thing, it was an American marketing gimmick - and other ridiculous crap with no basis in reality). This map, which unbelievably and apparently, many Americans are offended by HAS a ground in reality. It’s U.S. history, like it or not.

Donald, your spelling is an offense to American sovereignty.

  • wooster says:

I knew it. Several years ago I tried to tell everyone that Mexico would end up using Absolut Vodka against us. It was obvious at the time, but none of you listened. Now we’re screwed. We can do something about it. We can contact the folks over at Stoli for help.

  • Bob says:

Frankly, I’m less concerned about advertisements than I am about convincing New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to PARDON PETER LYNCH. Lynch is the Air Force veteran who was found guilty of a crime after he removed a Mexican flag from the University of New Mexico after he found it flying alone, told officials about the violation of flag protocol and ran up against a “brick wall” before taking matters into his own hands. I encourage you and your readers to join the effort today!

  • E Garcia says:

Absolutely, NO Absolut in our household ever again.

  • Mexicano says:

Now why don’t you look down
to where your feet is planted
That U.S. soil that makes you take shit for granted
If not for Santa Ana, just to let you know
That where your feet are planted would be Mexico
    Correcto!

  • Esperanza says:

    ¡Viva la Revolución!

  • whitejasminetea says:

So a historically accurate map, used in an ad campaign in a foreign country, is offensive to Red Blooded Americans now? God forbid you tender flowers ever travel out of the country, where there are [gasp!] people who don’t pledge allegiance to the US flag or don’t go to American Evangelical churches or don’t like ice cream and apple pie with whipped cream from an aerosol can. Lolz, you’d never see the scenery because you’d be too busy taking offence everywhere.

Seriously though, if our sense of sovereignty is so weak that we feel threatened by a freakin’ booze ad using an old world map, we need to re-examine our own self-identifies to see why we are so insecure and why we apparently need validation from a Swedish alcohol maker.

  • Donald says:

Looks like I stirred up a few people.
As for my spelling I apologise.
But where was all this concern when protesters were trampling on our flag?
Where is the concern over the insistence on Hyphened American labels?
Offensive is offensive and offends different people in different ways.
Remember this is American, so love it, change it, or leave it. But do it within the Constitution of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. and the
laws set forth by the people and for the people.
Got to go now, have to right a letter to Absolut, thanks to the contribution of the information provided by individuals in the forum.
Yes I am a Conservative old-man, thank you.

  • Donald says:

I’m aware of my spelling error. That’s my way of offending those that
feel so superior to everyone who are not expert typist.

  • relocated says:

What a freakin joke! Many Mexicans (including many who’ve posted on such sites as this) believe that it’s only a matter of time until they take over the entire US anyhow. And why wouldn’t they feel that way, considering how very welcoming we are? We cater to illegals and refuse to enforce existing immigration laws. They know it. We know it. And now we have a major alcohol company creating a commercial to encourage Mexicans to feel even more sense of entitlement toward us. It may have been meant to be funny, but I don’t find it funny at all.

  • S says:

Haha, I honestly can’t believe people are taking this so seriously. Absolut has truly done exactly what it intended to do: freak out the ultra-right-wing crazies and get people talking about their label.

  • Angelo Digrassi says:

I saw the ad and will never buy absolut again. It’s that simple.

Who’s next? Offend Americans some more so we can boycott you as well. Please…I’m waiting.

  • Javier Solis says:

I will go to the Superior or the nearest discount supermercado and buy a dozen of the Absolut for the next big fiesta on the 5 de Mayo. Somos un chingo y seremos mas kabrones. Aqui estamos y aqui nos quedamos. Y si nos sacan nos regresamos. Boycot all the productos Americanos. From the Coors to the Hummer to the Harley to the Levis to the WALMART to the McDonalds. Hurt the economy good yes. Boycot all the productos from the USA. Only buy the foreign productos like Nissan.
