Nearly $20,000 of Dina Nguyen’s campaign donations are in question because of a violation of state law.
The Garden Grove councilwoman running against Supervisor Janet Nguyen in the June primary picked up 14 donations before she filed the proper paperwork. The law requires a candidate to file a Form 501 (intent to run) before requesting or accepting any contributions.
A spokesman for Dina Nguyen, Truong Diep, seemed surprised when I called him today and promptly looked into the issue.
According to her report, Dina Nguyen picked up 14 donations totalling $19,700 from February 25 through March 6 — before she filed her Form 501 on March 7.
“It’s an oversight problem and we won’t do it again,” Diep said.
I also ran this by watchdog Shirley Grindle, who said she thought it was a problem, but was reserving judgement until she can look at Dina Nguyen’s filings.
As Matt Cunningham reported earlier this week, Nguyen raised more than $100,000 in about two weeks time — an effort Matt called “impressive.”
Opening your campaign by breaking the law is not an auspicious start for Dina. Plus she is a lawyer. She should know better. I also find it odd that she signed this report as her own Treasurer, rather than using her longtime professional treasurer.

I would worried about my client, Janet Nguyen, who ACTUALLY did break the law even with a high-priced pro like you looking over her shoulder. Your client got plenty of problems and you have your hands full. Let’s keep your eyes on the ball, instead of the blogs.
It is a mere technicality that she did not file the form and it is also not a very well known or in my opinion a necessary form. The form, if you look at it, is really intended for state legislators to accept or reject the expenditure limits for their races.
I have NEVER seen a case where the candidate did not complete the form ahead of time and was forced to refund the money, nor have I ever seen any enforcement associated with this form. When the error is caught, the candidate is simply required to file the form. Someone is chirping into your ear Peggy that this is a big deal when in reality it is not.
I am willing to bet $$ that many candidates forget this form until they actually go to the registrars office and file their paperwork there.
The Solution: return the money… then request it back.
Isn’t that what Janet did with her secret legal fund.
Then it’s no secret that Assemb. Van Tran is behind Dina campaign so should all this harsh critism be directed toward this standing elected official who happens to be a lawyer as well.

…and most candidates don’t screw up the same way. Its a simple rule, you cannot solicit and receive donations until you are a campaign. Try to find another case of this in the State! It is rare… Poor lawyer Dina continues to have problems with paperwork. Will she continue these screwups if she’s somehow elected to supervisor? Maybe Diep or Quach can press the buttons for her when its time to vote on county issues!
There’s nothing impressive about that $100,000 at all, all 7 of the Trannies pitched, they even made Trung Nguyen contributre to dina’s campaign eventhough he still owes over $200,000 in debt. They made each elected max out on the contribution limit, all 7 including Van Tran has been running around town twisting every arm they come across, andy quach call on everyone of his supporters to scrape money for Dina, if it wasn’t for the trannies and andy quach (whom she’s known to be involved with for some time now eventhough he was still girlfriend & commissioner of his city Roxanne Chow at the time) she wouldn’t be able to raise $15,000 from her constituents. This race is between the TRANNIES and JANET not with Dina, she’s no competition and this community and all other ethnic communities can tell you that. Van Tran you are doing this community a disservice, please let go of your hatred and do what you were elected to do for us. Serve us. dont’ abuse your power and connection.
If Scott Baugh wants to see Vietnamese Republican to remain loyal to the Republic party, the RCA really needs to listen to the Vietnamese community and hear their cry for fairness. Endorse the individual that the RCA think will best serve the party and the community as a leader. Endorse the candidate NOT the power behind it. We as Vietnamese voter will get very disappointed with Party if Scott Baugh, Kermit Marsh & Tim Whitacre are intimidated by Van Tran to endorse the Dina who not only unqualified in experience, come from a shady background, known to have bad reputation, having 3 kids from 3 different fathers, dont’ have her own supporter base, has no track record of what she’s done for this community but Van will go to any extent, even to lie to make Dina look good… many republicans have threaten they would switch party if Scott Baugh would even consider endorsing Dina becuase it tells us that even the Republican party would have to give in to Van Tran, so there’s NO true democracy. SCOTT BAUGH, you need to do what is right. Look at the two candidate carefully before you decide. All we ask is that you be FAIR
Just asking - next time you try to make a point you may want know what you are talking about and to be talking about the right form…lol. We are talking about the form 501….candidates intention….noth the form 410 to form a committee.
the Trannies are very creative, they will know how to cover all that up. I am sure they have someone to blame for. Could it be that Janet made them run scare so they messed up? I am sure they will find a way to prove that somehow Janet is involve in dina’s wrong doing. Janet, keep up the good work. We know you are fair to all ethnic communities and so far, you have represented us well.
Perhaps it’s time to bring in the law firm: Nguyen, Nguyen and Nguyen.

the Trannies are putting themselves in over drive to make sure they can win this time. It’s not Dina winning this race, it’s the Trannies and since all of them can use a paying job, they really need her to win this one so Dina can put them into a paying job and take out Janet at the same time… kill two birds w one stone. Dina unfortunately is not anywhere near what Van Tran and his boys have been trying to sell to the public. For someone who claim to be well educated and with a degree she sure needs to work on her speaking skills. Kissing up to people alone is not going to do it.
Dina and Andy deserves each other. Now they are truly the trannies.Andy thought he could stand on his own, he finally realized that he has no back bones. Neither Andy nor Dina know how to do anything honestly or keep things professionally. They definitely needs the help of Johnson Clark, otherwise they will keep on messing up. I would strongly advise the Trannies to pull out before they have to face more embarassment brought about by Dina Nguyen.

Imagine if she was making all the decisions on her own? What would happened then? She’s never known to be capable of making any important decisions. I doubt it if she’s making any decisions at all in this race. I can tell you, Van Tran is taking the lead on this one, he’s the mastermind behind this election.I admire Van but his decision to put his reputation on the line for someone like Dina beats me. I am only a small business owner in Little Saigon with no name ID and I wont’ even do that for her.
Dina, please do this community a big favor. Get out of politics while you are still ahead… WE DESERVE BETTER REPRESENTATION THATN YOU. Just becuase Van Tran say you are qualifed, does NOT mean that we will believe it. We know you and your family well. No matter what kind a shield you put up around you, we will be able to break it down and expose all your ugliness, we dont’ want want to do that to one of our own, but you are NOT GOOD ENOUGH to be one of our leaders…
