Total Buzz ~ The insiders' hotline to Orange County government and politics

‘OC Everything’ approved

March 18th, 2008, 11:58 am · 18 Comments · posted by PEGGY LOWE

There won’t be an “OC Landfills.” But there will be an “OC Waste and Recycling.”

The supes just approved a reorganization and re-naming plan that will affect a major part of county government and use the “OC brand.” It’s all meant to adhere to its new slogan “OC: Our Community, Our Commitment.” So far, our poll is running against it being a good idea and more towards the “dumb idea” option.

The supes debate got a little giddy, and there were lots of giggles from the dias and the audience on renaming the county’s garbage dumps.

“I prefer ‘OC Waste Management’,” said Supe John Moorlach, “although ‘OC Dumps’ is a lot of fun.”

The most controversial proposed name seemed to be “OC Library,” which was ultimately changed to “OC Public Libraries” after Supe Bill Campbell said he believes the use of “public” with “library” is “an important nomenclature.” Moorlach preferred “OC Libraries,” and tried to get Supe Chris Norby to side with him against Campbell, Pat Bates and Janet Nguyen. Norby got a big laugh when he said, “I don’t want to be on record as opposing public libraries.”

Just a little supe humor.

The board also changed the proposed “OC Animal Shelter” to “OC Animal Care.” And, several supes told CEO Tom Mauk, whose office authored the plan, that it wants a quarterly report on whether it is saving money, as he suggested. Answering Nguyen’s questions about the cost of new letterhead and business cards, Mauk said he believed there would be “minimal costs.”

I think the county has better things to do than to take time concerning them selfs with names.

Please dont say we will be wasting taxpayer money ordering signs and cards with these new names on them.

  • ANOTHER renaming! Yes, it’s been done several times here and there. Remember the bankruptcy when they ‘got rid of 2 agencies?’ NOT! You guessed it (I hope) they renamed 2 Agencies - they’re now called Departments. Everytime its done (and those departments have been renamed a few times since then) they need new signs, letterhead, envelopes and a thousand boxes of new business cards.

OCR - how about following up with what Mauk dismissed as “minimal costs.” What will that exactly be - and for what?

If you think they were giddy during the meeting, I wonder how loud their roar was after.

Anything that can further seperate us from the true dump… LA… is good. Why not build a name? Most people that live here don’t align themselves with a city, but with the county. So… build the county as a name.

  • rodd says:

OC Animal Care makes it sound like an animal hospital.

This renaming idea is such a bad idea I can’t believe Moorlach went ahead with it. All it does is make us look silly and cost us $$$$$$$$.

  • Kathy Silver says:

OK then I think we ought to rename our board of supervisors as well. I believe from here on they should be called the OC Board of Soups, Officially Corrupt or perhaps at least Officially Crazy. It is nuts to spend a cent on this. My fleas are a jumpin’ ! ruf ruf

  • R.U. Kidding says:

This confirms Orange County’s inferiority complex with L.A. This group of moron’s has nothing better to do? Why didn’t they just call it ‘Southern Los Angeles’ or, ‘Los Angeles of Orange County’. These idiots are truly an embarrassment.

  • grace says:

I really feel that the Orange County Board of Supervisors can put money to better use. I feel that they use our hard working for self indulgence. They vote their own raises and they dictate what they want to pay the little man that works for the county ( that is us )
So to put money to make a name change. What is wrong with
Orange County California. It’s a great name and well known.

  • Like totally says:

There is no way that I am answering the phone saying “OC” ! I’m saying Orange County like a grown-up.

  • Roger says:

As a nice finishing touch, OC can also have its own official county anthem, whose lyrics would begin with, “OC, can you say …?”

  • George Snith says:

This is the old game to keep there name in the news and waste money. Why don’t they be honest and admit we only need two supervisors 1 for north county and the 1 for south county. Someone run a check and see really how little territory in now just County property.
They have reduced all departments and Agencies except the Board of Supervisors and the Cerk of Board department. Iwonder why ???????

  • Jerry says:

I think they should put the whole idea under one department called OC Capital Waste.

  • Katherine says:

In your marketing survey (I suppose you did one), what did a fair sampling of the citizens of Orange County have to say about the name change. I’m talking with my friends, and word from the street is, “you’re kidding me, right?” This is a trendy attempt at hipness, and it damages our credibilty as a place where intelligent, thoughtful people live and work.

  • Willie says:

Who cares WHAT you call these departments? Does adding “OC” make them efficient, useful organizations? Uh, no, they’re still bloated, useless bureaucracies sucking the life out of the private sector.

  • Tom says:

Don’t they (OC officials and politicians) have other better things to do instead of this “name” game? That’s exactly how they waste our hard earned and unwillingly paid “tax money”.

  • outsideTHEbubble says:

Why would anyone living in a city or area with its own character (Huntington, Seal, The Orange Circle, ect.) want to abandon their identity and identify with tag made famous by a group of elitists on a couple dumb reality shows?

  • Trevor says:

Why is it that we have a bunch of high priced clowns as our Board of Stups. Get a life people! Don’t justify your positions by debating irrelavent matters.

  • sowhat says says:

a commentor stated “I can’t Moolach approved it”…Well that idiot would approve anything if it’s non sense…and as far as the board of sup’s go…they should be name the board of dictators…I’m a county worker and I can’t believe the frivalous things these people make into ordinances, laws, or what ever you want to call them..this is just another moronic, waste my day thing..I bet they spent many months on deciding that name….not too mention, the only time they aren’t frivalous, is when its time to give them a raise……each and everyone should be impreached…..hey, it’s like leisure world…the majority of the workers who actually get the job done get like 2.5-5 % raises, why the board gives themselves 10%—not too mention, the tax dollars go to pay their own retirement system, an extra $2250/amonth that can be used soak up the cost of this stupid and unnecessary name change….pathetic
