Former Lt. Bill Hunt has received another union endorsement…this time from the Orange County Professional Firefighters Association. Hunt, of course, was the top vote-getter in a survey by the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs. Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters was No. 2 in that survey, just 16 votes behind Hunt.
See the firefighters’ endorsement letter here.

Did I miss something? Is this an election year for OC Sheriff?
Only 5 votes count in this one and I don’t think any of those belong to the firefighters’ association. Maybe when Martin gets the appointment he’ll give Bill back his job.
What faustian deal did Hunt cut? Oh ya…there is still that issue of Prop. 172 money. Hunt shouldn’t sell out his former colleagues at Sta. 18. Have some loyalty bro!
He promised all of them he’d make them under sheriffs–the same thing he promises everyone who supports him. Doesn’t he know it isn’t up to the people? He needs to stop kissing Walters’ crazy-as5 ex-wife and start kissing the BOS.
Musing-so glad you brought up Prop 172. Direct from the rumor mill is that Bill ‘Let’s-Make-a-Deal’ Hunt is handing out promises of fame, fortune and rank-advances to anyone willing to sell themselves out. Why does everyone keep forgetting about how close this guy was to Carona when he needed the bump in his own career? They say those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. I can see the movie title now: Carona II: The Revenge of Bill Hunt
Whoa . That’s something. Orange County Fire Authority guys endorsing Hunt. Come on guys don’t be so naive as to think that the big cheeses at both 3631 and AOCDS didn’t talk this over amongst themselves prior to 3631 endorsing Hunt. Sounds like the Association and the Union think they can work together in the future. That is a good thing particularly if you are a safety member. That is because I’m sure you value the benefits you get for putting your butt in harms way everytime you go to work.
Rocket you have a pint. But this can’t be good news for the Board of Supervisors….
Sorry, meant ‘point’ but now that I look at it, a pint doesn’t sound like such a bad idea right now.
Hey doesn’t matter. I think I will have a pint. Ive been hearing rumors from up north about 4850/ IOD time as being the next potential target. Now Hunt will be described as a “union” hack by the OCGOP establishment types. Guess they don’t think Hunt will be their puppy dog. The BOS probably could care less about morale and leadership either. Nonetheless I think Walters or Hunt are the two best bets.
Rocket, my insightful friend, you are so right about the supes. I get a nasty itch in my shorts whenever they are about to pull a fast one on us, so either I gotta cut down on the Harbor Blvd love or Moorlach’s about to pull a Martin out of his hat….I think I’ll be chasing my pint with 2 shots and a round of penicillin. Cheers.
Hey, Doesn’t–I agree, Moorlach will either pull a Martin out of his hat or an Anderson out of his @ss…either way, OCSD loses.
I hate to rain on Paul Walters parade (no I really don’t), but everyone in the Department knows the only reason he received a large number of votes is because the new manager for AOCDS is Mark Nichols - he recently retired from Santa Ana PD as the President of the SAPOA. His predecessor, Don Blankenship was the President of the SAPOA before Nichols. Blankenship controls the 240 or so DAs who work in the Sheriff’s Department and have a vote within AOCDS (Just a little bit of investigative reporting would have verified this). With both men trying real hard for their man in blue to beat the man in green, even thought they both work for the men in green, it’s no wonder Walters got the “support” he did. As word of this is spreading around Station 18, a lot of Deputies are more than a little pissed off about it.
Regardless, what does Walters have to do with Hunt getting the AOCDS endorsement? Nothing! Now Hunt gets the endorsement of Fire as well and still the Register (Peggy Lowe) has to try to find something negative to put in the story. Geesh! Give the man (Hunt) his due. He’s earned two big endorsements, let him have his day.
Contgratulations Bill! We’re 10-8 and 10-23 awaiting instructions from our next Sheriff.
Keep in mind:
1. Walters, nor Anderson had the BALLS to run against Carona in 2006, and expose the corruption, Hunt did.
2. AOCDS voted for Hunt, then and now.
3. Martin did run, but lost to Hunt.
4. Let the voters finally have their decision by appointing who they chose for Sheriff, Bill Hunt.
It really seems simple.
Hate to break it to you Hunt maniacs but neither Hunt nor Walters will get the nod. Between Anderson taking his instruction from the board and Carona’s old handlers and Martin continuing to be first on Moorlach’s mind, the OCSD will get stuck with a lame duck no matter how many endorsements they get. And, for the record, the only reason Hunt got as many votes as he did was because his buddies at Theo Lacy, and yes, there are a lot of them, voted for him. They are not in a hurry to see their old-school way of life change with a new more civilized boss.
Wow,
Not an election until 2010 and Bill has the endorsment of O.C.F.A. Was this by the same margin as his O.C.S.D. endorsment ???? 440 people in the entire Sheriffs deparment doesn’t impress anyone. Is Bill trying to raise some money to run in 2010 maybe he knows he won’t even meet the M.Q’s as set out by the Board and what is it with Martin ???? Everyone continues to say he’s not qualified and yet everyone talks as if he is the new Sheriff. Is this from inside information or has the Board made some sort of announcment.
Ham Chuck: The Board doesn’t necessarily want someone who is qualified–just someone who will do what they want.
newsflash! Brian Wilkerson got sent to Community Services. Dave Wilson is replacing him at Theo Lacy. JB Davis is the new Interim Assistant Sheriff replacing Bishop and Rick Dostal (civilian financial director) is replacing Galisky.
Heads they are a’rollin.
It seems the general thought is that Moorlach is the all knowing “Carnac the Magnificent”.(with that silly beard) But hey he may be the Chairman but he ain’t the President. He has one district out of five. I’m not sure that the OCGOP establishment people and their sisters at the BOS give a hoot who’s qualified or who will restore morale. They just want a servant who responds to “Go fetch”.
In response to Ham&Cheese’s comments re MQ’s I direct his attention to the State of California Attorney General’s letter of February 21, 2008 slamming Anderson and particularily page 4 which states: “In addition…your statement that Mr. Hunt did not meet the legal qualifications to be Undersheriff…could have been interpreted as averring that Hunt did not meet the lagal qualifications of Sheriff. THIS IS CLEARLY ERRONEOUS.” Lastly, 5150 less a half. Are you serious? 400 plus guys work at Theo and they all are Hunt’s pals? Once again, Walters or Hunt. Both are two real local cops.
So Hunt and Walters are the only two out of a field of I don’t know lets say 20 or so that want the appointment to the job of Sheriff who have the integrity to stand up to this evil cabal called the board. Do you know all of the canidates on a personal level or is this some more well thought out slam everyone except Hunt or Walters ( and I mean Paul not Charlie ) . The fact still remains,we do not even know all of the people who will throw their name in the hat and yet Martin still gets slammed by the Huntanistas. That makes me wonder…why do they think Martin will get the job and if Martin is that big of a threat to Hunt / Walters he must be very squared away person
For all of those who keep talking about Hunt coming in 2nd…… What if everytime a president died in power we brought in the guy who finished second. Or maybe even the guy who ran agaisnt him. Your logic escapes me! You can keep saying it over and over, but it just shows your ignorance.
Hunt lost by a lot( Carona had twice the votes as Hunt), but even if he didn’t, there is a new field of candidates. If it were brought to a vote, Hunt would loose again.
Rocket-swear to allah, there are more Hunt goons in lacy than anywhere else. Not saying it’s good or bad–it just is what it is. As for Ham Chuck, Dude, you are clearly not getting the point–it isn’t that Martin is a squared-away person, it’s that he has been up Moorlach’s keester for a while and that seems to be the incubator for future Sheriffs unless someone calls bull sh|t on it. Anyone? Anyone?
The Board doesn’t necessarily want someone who is qualified–just someone who will do what they want.
Almost, but not quite. The BOS exists to do the bidding of the OCGOP, and the OCGOP wants someone who will do what they want.
Or, if you like, substitute the words “Mike Schroeder” for “the OCGOP” in the above sentence.
Once the BoS made the decision to appoint an interim sheriff, rather than hold an election, the situation was doomed until 2010. Moorlach is the de-facto sheriff ’til then. Maybe then the public can elect a decent sheriff and recall a supervisor who wanted to be sheriff all along. Meanwhile the public will reap what they sowed with the elections of Carona and Moorlach and the real sheriff’s department, the employees, will get the job done like they always have.
I like the blog photo of Hunt. It was taken right off his web page when he ran for Sheriff last year. There were 4-5 photos of him in uniform and SWAT gear.
Apparently political activity in uniform was not a crime the AG or Hunt cared about violating last year.
I wonder if Hunt got a private handslap? Perhaps his “don’t do that again” letter wasn’t released to the press? Certainly Wiskol and Lowe would not have ignored it or maybe they did. The AG certainly appears to have ignored the violation. It seems Anderson could claim bias on the part of the AG if he wanted.
Now with Anderson getting a public hand slap Hunt’s web page has been revised. No more photos of Hunt in uniform, and the attacks on Anderson can begin.
What do you say? Inspite of the Fire endorsement - Hunt is not seeking a Battalion Chief appointment. -
Lets add NO DOUBLE STANDARDS to the list of requirements for the office of Sheriff.
