Just got word — former state Sen. Joe Dunn won’t be running for the First District Supervisor’s seat. Union boss Nick Berardino confirmed today that the Santa Ana Democrat decided to honor his contract with the California Medical Association, where he serves as executive vice president and CEO.
“Given the situation in the state of California and health care reform he decided to honor his contract,” Berardino said.
With the announcement, the Democrats and the unions will have to renew their search for a candidate to run against Supervisor Janet Nguyen, the Republican who is building a war chest and racking up important endorsements, like a recent one from the powerful Lincoln Club.
The other Democrat rumored to be interested in the seat is Claudia Alvarez, the Santa Ana city councilwoman. And, Trung Nguyen, the Republican who lost to Janet Nguyen by just three votes, has already announced he will challenge her.
I have a call in to Dunn and will report more when I get it.

Wow! I cannot see ANYONE getting behind Claudia Alvarez. She is despised by most Santa Ana residents. Moreover, she has already lost two Assembly races in a row. She is done politically.
As for Trung Nguyen, it is a fact that Vietnamese American voters tend to support incumbents, particularly when they already have a Vietnamese American incumbent as their Supervisor. Trung will get NO traction this time. He may as well join Dunn and pull out of this pointless race.
Kudos to Supervisor Nguyen for scaring off the competition!
OC needs independent candidates or party-candidates who must have strong leadership and have guts to make right decisions for OC taxpayers - not for their party. Based on many recent crisis in our county, majority of the Board supervisors are either afraid or hypocrite to cast the right vote for taxpayers’ behalf.
There will be 2 seats opening on the county Board Supervisors in November 2008. One is in the First District and one is in the Third District.
It’s a judgment day!
