Carona to return on Monday

January 3rd, 2008, 2:33 pm · 39 Comments · posted by Peggy Lowe

caronapic.jpgSheriff Mike Carona will return to the department on Monday, the deadline for his self-imposed 60-day leave.

John McDonald, a Carona spokesman, just called and read me the official statement: “He does plan to return on Monday, Jan. 7. He will continue to fulfill his duties as sheriff on a regular basis while Undersheriff (Jo Ann) Galisky continues to oversee the day-to-day operations of the department.”

McDonald said he didn’t know if Carona would take another leave so he could work on the legal case triggered by a federal indictment on public corruption charges or whether Carona would be attending next Tuesday’s board meeting to inform the supes of his return.

The county’s attorney, Ben de Mayo, has said Carona’s paid leave was perfectly legal and he had the right to put Galisky in charge. However, if Carona had vacated his office for 90 days, the supes would have the right to appoint someone else to the job.

  • Huh? says:

Did the 60 day paid vacation make the felony indictments go away? Carona should remain under whatever rock he crawled under. Just go away, plead guilty and get this affair behind us.

  • john says:

whats the matter, Corona cant find anyone to donate/volunteer to cover for him?
How ironic, a law firm Donating there time to to defend him, isnt that the crux of his legal issues: accepting bribes and donations, does he not get it?

  • Obi Wan says:

Gotta love a guy who wants you to give up your constitutional rights to make him feel better.

  • Moonshadow says:

This man has no shame! He will stand and fight to the end! How many other public figures in the United States would remain in such a position while under indictement? His arrogance aside, the citizens, milktoast everyone, sit meekly on the sidelines. Action people! Action to rid your county of this cockroach!

  • Ipolitico says:

It is obvious that this guy has a hard time with making ethical decisions while in office.

I say let’s play his game.

Just like a a guy who is holed in some structure, holding hostages and ploting his next move. Meanwhile, the good cops volley of tear gas canisters in his hiding place as a way to flush him out.

Here, Corona is holding everyone hostage and the Board of Supervisor are the cops. The question is are they competent good cops or bad and/or lazy cops.

They, the BOS, needs to investigate every and all former and current employee that has worked under Corona, every and all decisions made by Corona and look into whether ethical lapse in judgements or crimes can be found.

Just a threatened launch of an investigation should have Corona reconsider retiring?

Also, how about having the Board consider approving a decision that significantly reduces active employees retirement benefits and salary for those employees who in the course of their employment commited fraud. Make this effectivedate two weeks from now so that Corona would be forced to retire given his possible loses in benefits.

The reality is that given the amount of stench that Corona mess has caused pretty much shows that this guy more than likely has alot more shady deals under some uncovered or untouched stone.

Come guys can’t you guys ask the for an investigative unit in the DA’s office to investigate Corona time in office?

  • AJ says:

I agree with “Huh?” This a-hole just needs to go away. His “Above the law” mentality is resonating throughout the department and it’s about time “The Beast” get beheaded. Add one to the list of people we can do without….. Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Barry Bonds, Michael Corona….. what a bunch of idiots.

  • Truth says:

I hope there is a big picket line in front, nobody wants him!

  • john says:

also, why is it that Coronas wife reigns over “The Commissary” of the jails? Theo Lacy, OCJ,and The Farm over 6000 inmates ordering tooth paste to chips and candy, cookies, what entitlement is this that the wives get to profit off it. Has anyone every seen the list of junk food provided. and Prices, why does a bag of Top Ramen that is sold in stores for a dime cost 90.cents? Inside its a freaken delecacy: top ramen mixed with cheetos and hot sauce, yum yum!! Got to love that salt intake. No wonder these guys are climbing the walls…

  • Steven says:

    Simply… UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Red Flags went up when I saw those pictures of him and known mob figures.

As usual, NOTHING will happen to the Sherrif and it’s back to status quo of corruption and greed. Great!

  • OC Fan says:

Good for him. Stand up and fight these unproven allegations.

  • I can’t believe how the piling up continues and he hasn’t even been convicted of a crime. Obviously everyone throwing rocks at the Sheriff is as pure as white driven snow. What’s behind your curtain?

  • Alf says:

If someone wants to rant and rave about something, they should get their facts straight. Sheriff Corona’s wife does NOT have anything to do with the commissary.

  • john says:

OC Fan, why dont you wake up?
the facts show this guy is just as corrupt as you are an moron…

  • Gina says:

He should be in jail as an inmate. If he wants to taunt Orange County, maybe we should demand a more permanent leave of absence. Or we can refuse to pay our taxes which pay his salary.

  • OC on Blast says:

The gall of this man!!! Only someone as arrogant, selfish and stupid as Mike Carona would request a PAID leave. Doesn’t he know that he has the majority of the citizens of this county seething??? The mere fact that all of his business associates and even his hand-picked assistant sherriffs are ALL convicted criminals is reason enough for him to be honorable (for once) and step the F*CK down!!!

But no… He will no doubt be driven to work in a county issued vehicle and we will have to endure his smarmy ass telling us he will be vindicated.

Mike Carona needs to move to the East coast.

  • john says:

ALF, maybe you should do some research, prior to Sheriff Coronas wife, it was Sheriffs Gates wife, prove me wrong….

  • OC on Blast says:

    Manuel

Take a minute to read up on the allegations, the evidence and some of Mike Caronas idiotic decisions as the Sheriff of OC. You can check this stuff out on OC Weekly there is a whole archive of damning stuff and some of his most salacious activities he will never even be indicted for.

  • Richie says:

New York style of law enforcement comes to Orange County.

  • TJ says:

    Welcome back sir!

  • Patrol Deputy says:

Those jack a**es at the Lincoln Club helped bankroll Carona at each election. They need to clean up this mess and bankroll a recall.

  • t-b says:

John - you are the one spouting off allegations about Debbie Carona running the OCSD commissary. You heard, you believe it, why don’t you provide a link to prove it. And not just a link to somebody’s blog. For the record - Debbie Carona sits on the OC Fair Board. And by the way, all profits from the sale of commissary to inmates goes to the Inmate Welfare Fund which benefits — wait for it — inmates.

  • Bonnie says:

To be fair; it’s not as if the guy acts in a vacuum now, is it?

    http://www.FamilyLawCourts.com/badcop.html

Ultimately; this is the fault of deliberately compromised system of checks and balances. Particularly since it was repeatedly covered in the OC Weekly.

How else to account for the delay in the indictments? Why is that?

OC, Mike is a product of OC.

  • Alf says:

    John,

Neither Debbie Corona or DeeDee Gates ran the commissary. Inmate services is run by someone else. She is married to an investigator, but he is not the Sheriff.

  • Jeb Bush says:

Super Pig returns to work. Ha ha ha. What a loser.

  • Greg Payne says:

I heard that John and Ken Radio show will be outside Mike Carona’s house with a megaphone asking for him to resign. I think they should also do it at his office on Monday.

I also heard all the mayors of Orange County plan to come out for a public and uniformed request for his resignation.

  • Bob Forsberg says:

Waterloo Mike. Get out of town before you take the department with you.

  • Pegs29 says:

I predict he will work one day & go on a another leave!

  • Truth says:

Does anyone know why the employees at the Orange Unified School District are so upset with Sheriff Carona.. also asking for his resignation?

  • William Wallace says:

    Sheriff Carona:

You’ve been convicted of nothing, you’ve pled guilty to nothing and as of yet, nothing has been proven. Please exercise your right to a fair trial and resist the efforts of those who would attempt to force you out on nothing more than unproven allegations.

    Freeeeeeedom!

  • Blow Me Over says:

I couldn’t believe these headlines when I saw them! Are we living in an over the top written drama/comedy movie?

Orange County is his trick and he is the con man. No wonder teachers and politicians are speaking out. I think he has hit his tipping point. These headlines in the morning papers will lead to outrage and calls for action.

  • Troy says:

Mr. Carona is an embarassment to the good people of Orange County. Shame on the Board of Supervisors for not having the backbone to take care of this loser. His return will only sully the reputation of OC yet again in the national media. Shame!

  • Carlos says:

“OC = Orange Corruption.” Entire Justice Systems and Board of Supervisors are useless and incompetent. They are full of cronies and deadweights.

Like Edgar Hoover from FBI in the past, there is nothing they can do.

  • Carlos says:

Sherriffs Department has to serve many house evictions and ticket quotas in Orange County.

They need a true leadership to lead them to the past glory.

  • classless says:

As long as we have idiots like Todd Spritzer in office, we will have criminals with badges and guns.

  • OC Fan says:

Facts, do any of you know the meaning of facts? I, just like you and the public, hear all the allegations, but as yet I have not seen any facts. If you have facts, real facts, not trash from the OC Weekly (give me a break, anyone with any intelligence can see that is just a rag, a small tad higher than the Enquirer) show it. I’ll believe facts when I see them and I will be one of the first to depose Carona if I see facts. Until then how can any intelligent person believe rumors and innuendos. There has been years to prove these things out yet no facts have ever been shown. The Grand Jury has yet to show hard evidence. Let’s wait for the court system or if many of you have evidence., show it,, prove it. I’m waiting… been waiting for a few years now…

  • OC Fan says:

  • Clyde Thompson says:

The only difference between cops and criminals is honesty! Criminals openly admit they are bad for society. My daughter used to get upset when I told my grandchildren that O.C. sheriffs are bad people and never to trust them. Thanks Mikey for helping me prove my point!!!

  • Patrol Deputy says:

    Clyde:

You need to stay off the crack pipe. The Deputies at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department are the best in the world. They have not and do not support the idiot in charge. The Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriff’s has demanded Carona’s resignation.

It’s idiots like you who voted him into office. If the residents of Orange County had listened to the deputies in the first place we would not be in this mess.

I bet my paycheck you are a criminal who has been arrested and has a bone to pick. Please go crawl under rock and teach your kid some more bigotry.

  • Clyde Thompson says:

    Patrol Deputy
Thank you for making my point. You don,t know me but through some unbelievable, badge given, power have been able to peg me as a crack head and a convicted criminal. Unfortunately, I,ve never done any drugs, and I,ve never been arrested. However, through my employment, I,ve had the opportunity to observe ,and subsequently reflect on, the actions of O.C.s finest and have seen too many who, like yourself, have the unique ability to be the, on the spot, Judge and Jury. Too often actions seem to be predicated by what APPEARS right and will look good on a resume, rather than what IS right. Further more, I didn,t vote for Corona. As a matter of fact, the first time I saw him, I was amazed by how much he reminded me of a Nazi !
