Bill Hunt’s sheriff campaign is underway

November 12th, 2007, 2:33 pm · 18 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

bill-hunt.jpgRandy Rimmey, a supporter of Bill Hunt’s past and future campaigns for sheriff, call to say that he attended a San Clemente fundraiser this morning for Hunt (photo). He said about 25 people showed up at the low-key event.

Hunt, a former OC sheriff’s lieutenant, and Ralph Martin, an LA sheriff’s commander, unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Mike Carona last year, and both have expressed interest in taking over the job now.

If Carona, by the spring, is convicted in his federal corruption indictment or resigns, voters would vote for a new sheriff next June.

The buzzards are circling! But if the trial doesn’t start until summer, how can they run for anything?

  • Carlos says:

Orange County is definitely need a new Chief and Sheriffs with a basic integrity to serve community. I do not think Bill Hunt has what it takes to clean house unless he is proven himself. It is goin to be a very delicate and tough jobs.

  • Dan,

I like the “buzzards” remark. You hit it on the head.

Now, everyone back to earth for a minute. All this new sheriff stuff is crazy talk. Lets keep our focus and remember: Headlights On!

  • mradamhenry2u says:

Hey everybody, let’s show our unwavering and mindless support for Sheriff Mikey “Flacid” Carona. Tonight, at midnight, when it is realllly dark outside, let’s all turn our headlights on so soon-to-be-ex-sheriff Mike will know we think about him, and wuv him, and think about him, and want to the next Debbie, ok? We can all drive around with our headlights on and then Mike will now we are not at home, but actually driving around supporting him and then he can go to our homes and sleep with our wives when we are not paying attention. Oh, and then we will call another session of the OC Republican Sheep lead by the other Mike (Schroeder) and Jack “the little sheriff’s left nut” Anderson endorse him to be the prison librarian when he gets to the joint.

Oh, and don’t forget, we are going to make smoores, too. (insert mindless, teenage girl giggles here).

  • former sta 18 says:

hmmm… how come a Capt. who pleaded no contest to 16 misdemeanor counts of soliciting Carona votes during worktime on the work phone just gets transfered? But Lt. Hunt who took leave to campaign for office gets put on admin leave and an IA investigation, then gets demoted and freeway therapy before being forced to resign? I’m sure theres no impropriety there.. nope, surely thats not vengeful behavior is it? As a former employee, I was sickened by all the rear kissing and social promotion, instead of the darn good men and women of the dept who deserved to get promoted and were held back for long periods of time. Hopefully this trial blows the lid right off and things turn around so the employees can be proud again.

  • Mike says:

I think Bill Hunt has a lot of credibility since he was the one telling us that Carona lacked the integrity to be Sheriff before any of us knew (or were convinced) that Carona was actually the ringleader and puppetmaster of his own dark inner circle of corruption.

Anyone with that kind of foresight has to know what they are talking about. Kudos to Hunt.

Now let’s get some stock picks from the guy!

  • DR3 says:

mradamhenry2u; your comments are quite juvenile. When do we get to hear you “Bill Hunt walks on water” drivel?

  • Mr. AH2U,

    Two points:

    1. Whether or not you support Our Sheriff, I agree that you should always drive with your headlights on at night.

    2. Yes, it is a train and it is arriving at Station 18 with Our Sheriff, Michael Carona, aboard.

“Headlightlights On” for both Sheriff Carona and nighttime driving!

    Facts:
(don’t let them get in your way)

Galisky has worked hard and succeeded in all of the positions she has held. She is a tireless worker, who doesn’t seem to ever go off duty. Just ask the Captains, lts, and even Asst. Sheriffs who receive emails from her 24-7. The attacks on her are unwarranted, especially since she is not running for Sheriff…she is meerly doing her job. If you have ever worked with or for her you will actually know (facts) that she is a solid deputy, very smart, and very dedicated.

Let Anderson, Hunt, and Martin duke it out while JoAnn Galisky keeps up the hard work!

  • Macnocheese says:

More facts for Former St 18 - the captain you refer to did not plead no contest. All of the charges were dismissed.
The AG filed without the facts and then had to walk away. A hard thing to do for a prosecutor but it happened, probably because they filed before the investigation was over.

As for the IA, the calls were from her home on a weekend, so who knows? But that is normally confidential, unless you call the press on your way out of PSD. I think she just had to apologize for making people feel uncomfortable. Ouch. I can tell you that the transfer hurt north patrol not her.

That said - The U.S. AG apparently took their time on the Sheriff investigation. Several years in fact, so pretty sure no dismissal will be forthcoming for the Sheriff. The drama will take many, many months to unfold. 60 days may not be enough.

  • former sta 18 says:

Mac, I will concede that yes you are right and the charges were not filed in return for her writing letters of apology. However, it was done on work time. The point I was trying to make is that it was an offense that was subject to the employee in question being terminated. due to the fact that she is a cheerleader for the Big MC, thats why the transfer. Lt. Hunt has a valid federal lawsuit underway for the retribution perpetrated on him. He did follow the rules but because he spoke out against the current regime, alas, he was squished like a bug, politically speaking. Curiously, I actually like the aforementioned Capt., she’s a nice lady, and I also like Lt. Hunt. I do not agree to the terribly unbalanced treatment of either employee.

  • Capt. Murray was able to successfully have 16 misdemeanor counts of illegally soliciting campaign contributions for Sheriff Carona dismissed. As part of her agreement, she was required to apologize. She stated that she “understood” that soliciting endorsements, given her position as a captain in a hierarchical organization like the Sheriff’s Department, might have made the solicitees uncomfortable because the sheriff and perhaps other ranking officers, such as herself, might make decisions which affect their career and position in the department. She ended by stating with all sincerity, “If my call affected you in this way, I regret it.”

This was obviously good news for Capt. Murray, who was able to put the events behind her and focus on her law enforcement career again.

Now let’s get our focus back to where it needs to be - the business of returning Our Sheriff, Michael Carona, back to his law enforcement careeer! Headlights On!

Regarding Capt. Murray, the charges were dropped in exchange for her apology to deputies and community service.

  • Harry Chonchy says:

Randy Rimmey is working for Bill Hunt’s publicity? That is bad news considering he was kicked off a DEA task force for constantly sleeping on the job. Scary!

  • rich white guy says:

Capt. Murray, like Our Sheriff, Michael Carona, have spent their adult lives serving our comminuty.

    Headlights On!

  • Dan says:

    former sta 18,

You assert that Hunt was demoted for excercising his free speech rights, yet nobody (including you or I) knows the real facts. As I recall, Frank Mickadeit contacted Hunt requesting details on his demotion. Hunt refused to open his file, claiming he had been burned by the media before.

The courts have not ruled on Hunt’s suit. They tossed out 3 parts of his suit, leaving the other two parts for a jury to decide. Maybe when the whole story comes out we can offer an educated opinion. Until then, you’re just speculating. Unless of course you’ve seen Hunt’s file and know the “specific” reasons he was demoted. If you have, please share!

  • me says:

to former sta 18: Not only did the BOS let Carona have what he wanted, so did AOCDS. They concurred with BOS about amending the requirement of holding the rank for at least 2 years. I think AOCDS should also take some of the blame - they coward down and then kissed Carona’s butt. Now they ask for his resignation. Quit flip-flopping!
