Harkey flexes more muscle against recall

September 5th, 2007, 5:43 pm · 6 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

Dana Point Mayor Diane Harkey is Goliath and growing against the recall effort. The mayor — who’s also an Assembly candidate — got the OC GOP’s governing  Central Committee to unanimously oppose the recall, and has been endorsed by five congressmen and some two dozen legislators in her Assembly bid.

Now, all but one of the Dana Point council members have signed a letter opposing the recall. See it here.

What do you expect from Lisa Bartlett and Joel Bishop who are pawns for Harkey and now sit on the DP Council. They were bought and paid for last year so Harkey would have a majority. I could not expect anything less from Steve Weinberg, the fourth council member who used to call me and ask when whether or not he should fight against certain Harkey issues. He has no backbone and has also been bought out by Harkey.

That leaves Lara Anderson who is the only one on the DP City Council with integrity and will not change her stripes as others have done. We believe in Ms. Anderson and congratulate her on her carrying her new baby, as we wish her the best in the coming months.

Here is Harkey last evening, after many of the proponents had spoken about how Harkey allowed her support team to slander and defame those residents who oppose Harkey, two weeks ago, and the mayor did not attempt to stop them from slandering others. Harkey sat on her throne and told the proponents that they spouted maliciousness and she would consider suing them. Have you ever heard of a politician suing her constituents for speaking their mind at a council meeting?

This is the same Diane Harkey who has not come forth and refuted the charges against her but is willing to put her neck on the line and issue derogatory statements that she will sue anyone who is malicious and talks of her gross failure of ethics. Hey…if she can’t refute the charges now, how will she do so in a law suit?

Okay…she has three members of the city council who oppose the recall. But, in the meantime, there are close to 1000 signatures on the petitions and it has only been two weeks. Harkey may have three out of four other council members bowing to her higness, but there are 12,000 registered voters out there who would like to see her go.

Rememer what happened to the Queen when she looked down and saw the fangs of the asp in the Nile?

This news is about as earth-shaking as the sun rising each day. Harkey’s two enablers, Bartlett and Bishop, could only be expected to sign. As for Weinberg, considering that he is yet to venture a position on anything, has finally shown who his loyalties belong to, and it’s not to the people of Dana Point.

For these sitting council members to throw their support behind someone who threatens legal action against her constituents is despicable. Why are they not interested in having some answers to the many questions of charges of unethical conduct of our Mayor? Why not indeed. Thank God Council Woman Lara Anderson is still a person of principle, and has chosen to be the lone representative of the people of Dana Point.

And why would ANY constituent vote to put someone in higher state office who not only answers criticisms exclusively with denial, but who might end up trying to sue them?!!
