Berardino and Moorlach: Brothers in arms?

August 28th, 2007, 10:36 am · 2 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

nick-berardino.jpgI can’t imagine there’s a more rancorous relationship in county government than that between public employee unions and Supervisor John Moorlach, who’s made it clear he wants to reduce union retirement benefits. So who would have imagined Nick Berardino (photo), the general manager of the biggest county employee union, giving a “me too” to Moorlach’s attack on county Treasurer Chriss Street?

Actually it was a “me first,” since Berardino seems to have been a critic of Street before Moorlach.

Berardino is giving a press conference on the subject at this moment. I’ll be interested to hear if he distances himself from Moorlach while laying into Street.

I suppose he could say something like, “Moorlach should have never backed the guy to begin with, since it was clear he had troubles at the outset of his campaign.”

Or perhaps Berardino will bite his tongue, content that Moorlach is going after the deupty sheriff’s pensions while he signed off on a new contract — with the existing pensions — for Berardino’s Orange County Employees Association.

Any chance the OCR will look deeper into the Moorlach-Street relationship and how Street, a man with zero political experience, no name ID, and plenty of questionable baggage, came to be elected in a countywide office?

Or is the Moorlach stranglehold on the OCR-Greenhut editorial board to much for the professional journalist to overcome?
